In celebration of selling 500 million PlayStation consoles, Sony is releasing a limited-edition 2TB PS4 Pro with translucent dark-blue console shell and gold accents. The package will also include a matching DualShock 4 wireless controller, PlayStation Camera, Vertical Stand, and mono headset. It will be available for $499.99 at select retailers starting August 24.

In addition, each system will have a commemorative copper plate on its front, with its limited edition serial number etched on. And, for the very lucky few who can get them, we have a few ‘extra special’ hardware units with serial numbers that commemorate important events in the history of PlayStation.

Should have made it look like the original playstation but play all Playstation games up to 4. Then it would have been special.

The video reminded me of a afternoon car salesman commercial.

I did watch that. That wasn't clear at all. I would still counter 50,000 isn't limited. It's up there with those gold plated consoles out there. This is another Piece of hardware waiting to become a piece of trash.

I don't care what anyone says, that is a beautiful console. I love the late '90s translucent look.

I might try to get one. The original PlayStation was my haven back when I was younger because my family was dirt poor and because I had to save up forever to get one. Some of the best times of my childhood. I’m a sucker for special limited number gaming stuff anyways.

I fucking love transparent/translucent shit, especially when it comes to game consoles and controllers. This PS4 Pro looks pretty tight. I ain't paying $500 for one though, fuuuuck dat. I'm still waiting for the PS4 Pro to hit $200. PS4 and XB1 have been around almost 5 years and we shouldn't still be paying launch prices for these things, even with the newer more powerful versions. One of my friends picked up an XBX for $150 at a Target recently. I shit you not. Cashier called the manager, they couldn't fix the issue, manager said they gotta sell it for that price. In fact, the manager himself jumped on that deal too. I wish my friend had hit me up that day. I ain't in the market for an XBX (and I got a base XB1 I almost never use), but I sure as fuck woulda bought one for $150. Anyways yeah I do like this translucent blue PS4 Pro and DualShock 4. I wish more systems came in a variety of colors and case-types by default. Not just for limited/special editions and whatnot.

If I didn't already have a PS4 Pro then I'd pick one of these up. But since I do, pass.

No, I hate to admit this, but they are right.
I actually had one of the 20th Anniversary PS4 consoles, and a lower numbered unit, which was much more "limited" than this, and there was nothing special about it other than the perceived value that it supposedly held.

Outside of collectors, nearly everyone I know who plays PS4 games didn't even know what it was, and were all basically like 'meh' when I attempted to sell it to them - this was quite a few people who were all hardcore gamers and some who were collectors, and they just could care less.
If there were something truly special about it, like having a more powerful GPU, or a custom firmware/OS with a special theme that was only unique to that console, then I would have said it was worth it.

The only difference was literally just the shell, and that console only went down in "value" from day one.
The way the guy talked in the video was also very condescending to the viewer like, "You are so stupid, that I have to explain to you, just how wonderful, this console really is." :meh:

If someone doesn't already have a PS4 Pro, it is definitely a nice pickup, but as a collector's item, it may be decades before it ever has true value associated with it, especially since there are 50,000 units instead of 12,300 units like the 20th Anniversary PS4, so yeah, it already has that against it.
Also, yes, I do see what the 20th Anniversary PS4 consoles are going for on ebay - they are absolutely not worth that, and are basically worth what you can get for them - bought mine, sealed with everything included, for $625 years ago and ended up trading it for a bunch of other legacy/retro game equipment with real value since absolutely no one would buy it, even at a much lower cost, and for me, at a loss.

All of the equipment I traded it for has only gone up in value - can't say the same for the 20th Anniversary PS4...

On a side note, I also don't think that modern consoles will be as collectable as older consoles, since older consoles could all continually operate as stand-alone consoles.
These newer consoles, however, have to be setup/registered via the Internet and via their Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo servers, and once those servers shutdown, and a console hasn't already been setup, it is basically a paperweight - this makes the value in collecting them for their playability, virtually nil.

I can go buy a PS2 and play any game on it at any time without worry, and keep it pristine on a shelf as well.
15 years from now, I can go buy a PS4, but oh wait - has it been setup? What games can I play that don't require servers or online functionality to work? Am I just collecting it for the console itself as a period-piece or to actually play?

Yeah, all of those things are going to significantly lower the value outside of hardcore collectors, and even then, they may have to go through multiple units to get a playable console.
For collectability, this current generation of consoles is quite the paradigm shift from the previous generations because of this, and they most likely are not going to have the same value years from now like the others have had due to the above potential issues.

Yes spread the word. More for me. Every single limited edition PS4 and PS4 Pro I've purchased, I ended up flipping for an easy 25% profit.

These things are gold. Last one was God of War Limited Edition bundle. $399 at Target, I played the game and finished it, then resold the bundle for $550.

With 500M units sold, a 50,000 edition is, indeed, limited.

My gosh some of you will bitch about anything. Its not really a waste of money over the standard Pro as it does come with a 2 TB hard drive, vertical stand and the camera. So really you are paying hardly anything extra at all for a unique looking limited edition console.

To reply to a few posts above: The reason the PS4 and Xbox One arent getting cheaper is because unlike in earlier generations, hardware isn't getting much faster or cheaper anymore. We have peaked out and are only seeing small speed increases each gen. Until a big breakthrough happens, with a new material instead of silicon, or something else revolutionary, this is how things are going to be.

I might try to snag one to resell on ebay since there is a good chance people get stupid over this. That is only if I can get it reasonably easy though. I'm not willing to camp out more than a couple hours as I really don't see making more than about $100 profit on it.

Pretty sure you don't need internet connection to setup and play any PS4 game. You won't get any patches but that is the same as your ps2.

Putting a desktop-quality CPU in the consoles like previous generations instead of the newer mobile pieces of shit would actually be a "big breakthrough."

Sold my PS4 at Gamestop to 3rd party that was shopping there since Gamestop said it was defective.
Just went to the local ATM and I gave them my scratched up PS4.

If I was 14 again I would just save up my lunch money like I did when getting the SNES, and use my yearly allowance they gave us to buy Christmas gift for others to get games.
Ah, the good old days of staving at school and buying cheap shitty gifts for the family while buying NES/SNES games for myself.......
After that stint, it was pre-pay lunch for me. :(

Do we have any history on what an older "limited edition" console is going for now a days? How much more are they worth then what the owner paid for them? How much are Intel limited edition 8086's going for now a day?

It is only a waste of money if the people buying it don't like it. Value is entirely subjective.

If I was buying a 4k TV today, and a PS4 Pro anyway, why not. But I'm not...yet.

My launch PS4 still works well and I upgraded the HD to 2TB right after I bought it. I think a 1 or 2 TB SSD would be sweet, but not sure it's worth the $$.

So if anyone is buying this and wants the sell their "non-limited edition" PS4 Pro for $200, let me know...

It doesn't invalidate my point that 50,000 isn't a small number and that it's a poor price/performance ratio.

For a console that still sells 500k to 1m units a month worldwide and has over 80m sold to-date, it is. And for $100 over the price of the standard Pro you're getting the camera, double the hard drive space, and an upgraded headset. Seems like a good deal to me if you can get your hands on one.
