United Microelectronics (UMC) has announced its innocence against charges brought by the US Department of Justice accusing UMC and Fujian Jinhua of stealing trade secrets from Micron Technology. UMC says that the allegations that it poached Micron employees to steal trade secrets are false because less than 10% of its DRAM R&D team are ex-Micron employees. They also say that Micron's memory is a 32nm-feature-size DRAM technology which was a few generations old when UMC started their project. The statement notes other differing design features between Micron and UMC. Fujian Jinhua has already proclaimed its innocence.

"Contrary to any impressions that may have been given by the civil and criminal lawsuits, UMC's DRAM technology is, fundamentally, based on a cell design entirely different from Micron's design. In a nutshell, UMC developed a memory cell with a 3x2 layout, which is completely different from Micron's 2x3 memory cell. "Another false impression is that Micron developed its 25nm DRAM technology in the United States. The reality is that Micron purchased its 25nm DRAM technology from Rexchip, a Taiwanese company, and Elpida, a Japanese company, in the early 2010's.

considering that they just banned micron from selling chips in china due to a UMC patent infringement injunction against micron just filed, I'd think there's some merit here. They're throwing their weight around and hoping that Micron settles or drops their case by strangling a major source of income.

Not that I want to root for multi-national corporate hardware/software patents ... The truth is, they're all guilty of something greedy. That's how they got to be successful huge companies. I dont know of any company that has succeeded by being a good citizen of the world. If they're not ripping you off, they're ripping them off, or in the case of most/all US companies with operations overseas, they're ripping everyone off as much their lawyers make possible.

As we have learned from politicians and mobsters and other evil people, only one things go and that's deny - deny - deny ASO
Even if you have been caught with your hand in the cookie jar and it was broadcast and streamed live worldwide,,,, deny - deny - deny.

What does that matter? It's not a quantity thing, it's a quality. You poach the right person who steals the right documents and presto.

That's hardly a defense. Neither is claiming that because you (allegedly) stole old tech it's not really theft.

urm... wasnt part of microns filing that UMC were using the SAME internal project names as micron used? ./beardstroke...

walks like duck, talks like duck... proberbly stolen duck.
