UMC And TSMC Target Automotive Market

DigiTimes is reporting that both United Microelectronics Corporation and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are extending their automotive market presence. TSMC has gained validation from Mercedes and BMW while UMC has established a microcontroller unit deployment team.

UMC is aggressively seeking orders from IDMs on automotive-use MCU orders, instead of just investing in automotive component suppliers as in the past, the sources said. UMC has investments in automotive-use multimedia devices and component suppliers including Action Electronics (ACN) and Fortemedia.
