The gang at Overclockers Club just posted a review of the Ultra LSX 750W power supply today. Aside from minor gripes, the review was fairly positive overall.

I know from past experience that other Ultra power supplies haven't quite been up there with the best, but the LSX 750W electrical performance is excellent. The DC voltage load regulation, in combination with very low noise/ripple levels, make for very good DC quality on all the rails. The efficiency, though not quite meeting its 80 Plus Bronze certification following the OCC power supply testing methodology, is still very good at 87% maximum.

I had an older Ultra 500 watter i got from fry's about 5 yrs ago FREE after mail in still working till this day in my 2nd pc...

I wrote this on January 21, 2010..

ULTRA = FAIL.. been that way for years! The problem is that there is no consistency in what they offer. One of their product might be good but then the next one bites.. and this trend constantly repeats itself. They are like the anti-Corsair! The only consistency is that there is NO consistency in their quality.

Unless things have really changed, what I wrote still applies. Until you start seeing ULTRA power supplies CONSISTENTLY rated well by [H]ardOCP.com and jonnyGURU.com, I would avoid them.. too many other manufacturers who ALWAYS make very good power supplies.

Later in that thread I wrote a lengthy post about going through all the [H]ardOCP.com and jonnyGURU.com ULTRA power supply reviews http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035224032&postcount=52 and this was my conclusion..

-[H]ardOCP.com - 5 out of 8 FAIL (all 4 reviewed since 2008 have failed)
-jonnyGURU.com - the 4 reviews average to a score of 8.125 - I believe a score of 9.0 or higher is needed to get the jonnyGURU.com "recommended symbol" so not even the average of 4 reviews gets close to earning that. If judged by [H]ardOCP.com standards, probably 2 out of 4 FAIL (if you think a 7.5 isn't a fail then perhaps my standards are too high).

If you feel that Thermaltake, Silverstone, Antec, BGF, Corsair, Enermax, OCZ, SeaSonic, PC Power & Cooling or many of the other 54 PSU manufacturers currently available on NewEgg.com have produced the same or worse review results, then ULTRA isn't as bad of a PSU company as I believe that they are. But to my untrained eyes, unless you had a X3 and perhaps the X-Pro, you probably didn't get a very good ULTRA PSU. All 5 PSUs (5 different models) reviewed since early 2008 have FAILED! Not that PSUs from other companies don't ever fail or get bad reviews, but they don't to the extent that ULTRA does!

I am going to use Paul Johnson's words to close this out as in one sentence he sums up what I wrote many more sentences to say.. "There has been almost zero consistency out of Ultra coupled with a recycling of mediocre platforms that has left us with a bit of a bad taste in our mouths." That is why ULTRA=FAIL (in my opinion).

While my mind is on PSUs for the moment, thought I would pass along these links on the subject..

After how dirty ultra has been in the past, the last thing you want to do is waste money on their products. If you want to be an idiot and support a company that is completely untrustworthy... Now if they prove to be legit over the next 5 years, maybe I'll change my mind. Plus they still sell very crappy stuff like the LSP psus.
