10.10 was a little too unstable, even after adjustments.
I've had great experiences with 10.04 though.

Both were great OSes though, each just for different things though.
 
One of my rig (2p) having issue with langouste / kraken or something ..but I believe it is langouste.

When it completed 1 WU and tried to send back result .. it couldn't.
When I tried to run " -send all ", I saw it says something like

Your client.cfg is correct. Is langouste running?

i ran the command:

Killed and restarted langouste, still had same issue.
 
If it won't send and the results are in the work folder,
Shut down the client, run -configonly and disable the proxy, restart the client and it should start sending
 
i know, but it means i will have to do that again every time a WU is done. :)
 
May be you have a newly update kernel .. In that case I would recompile langouste and use port 8080 instead. That way if langouste fail it would still upload the WU by itself later.

Another possiblity is disk is full

df /tmp

Also I would check the contents of /tmp/langoute/<process number>/clientdir/FAHlog.txt to see what langouste is trying to do

There is also log file langouste.log in fold directory that you might want to read

Did taking Langouste out of the equation (disabling proxy) help?

Langouste logs would definitely shed add'l light on the issue (good suggestion by overdoze).

Should we fork this off to another thread as well? (open question)

However, result is NOT sent to SF. When trying to send it manually couple times and failed, I was so frustrated and deleted work folder and other files.

If I disable proxy and/or stop langouste, everything works fine.
 
Have you preserved a copy by any chance?

Next time, please record all output. Otherwise troubleshooting is grasping
at straws.

Also, perhaps you've just started using Langouste an you're mistaking Langouste's
standard behavior for an issue?

When Langouste is operating and is properly configured in the client you will _never_
see successful return by the main client (because it happens in background).

Please carefully examine following log. It covers completion of a WU,
followed by apparently unsuccessful WU return (12:20:27, at that time
Langouste engages background client) followed by indication of successful
background return (18:04:17).

Your Langouste log looks OK.

Note: It failed to get WU (6901) at first, so i killed langouste (pkill) and disabled proxy. Once the client was able to get WU (6901), I restarted langouste.

The langouste has been running with no issue on another 2p rig.

If you are using Mozilla Firefox, an easy way to get started, and a very reliable, free IRC client is Chatzilla.

Yes guys, I know that there are probably 27 different favorite and 'best' IRC clients; I'm just suggesting something for him that's easy to install and has a fairly easy user interface.
 
Anyone install FaH after 7 came out? I just set up an Ubuntu 2P last night, but I can't get the folding to install. "cannot execute binary file" is the reply, and I have checked that fah and the fah6 file are both 777. The only two things that seem strange is not updating 10.10 (don't push the shiny, candy~like button), and the fah folder doesn't seem to stay shared, when I share it it just closes without asking anything. This is after the first reboot. Am I missing something? Should I get on IRC?
 
Well, the instructions were to get 6, and I am sure that is what I downloaded, but I can't seem to install it, and the share tab will not stay selected on the fah folder... I'm beginning to wonder if I did something wrong with install. Don't download anything after initial install, even security patches and whatnot, right?

You know, even creating a new folder and starting over I notice that creating the share permissions just closes the window and the home folder, nothing sticks. Even if I chmod it to be full permission for everyone (just to check).

Well, one problem is that my dumbass grabbed 32bit. reinstalling when the d/l finishes

yeah the 32bit will not work with the 64 bit OS ;) just so you know you are not the first to do that. :D you should not have any problem if you follow the guide and use the correct version of FAH. And you can go ahead and install all of the updates if you wish the warning about updating was added when they thought there might be a problem with some updates to the file system. But that has been worked out now. If you have any problems just let us know someone will help if the can. ;)

And, welcome back. I was a lurker here for years and you, Atlas and some of the other early voices here are why I joined 33.

It Lives! Two units complete, want to get a few more before I set up the wireless... Does dropping the GUI and going CLI help much?

Messed up my 2p box, and decided to reinstall Ubuntu.
Guess what ? After installed 10.10, rebooted... then received the message " ... version no longer supported...update to new version...." ... able to make few clicks (in order to disable auto update) .. then it was hung for roughly a minute or two and displayed black screen (with cursor and mouse pointer -- not active).....

NOTE ..finished step 1 of this guidance..... installed and rebooted ....

What should I do now ? update to 11.xx?

10.10 is not supported but that doesn't mean it's broken.
I guess you could try to install without any Internet connection, and see how it works after.

Odd...I'll try it tonight, but I just installed 10.10 Desktop without any major issues a month or so ago.
 
I just installed it on same rig few days ago with no issue.
Reinstalling it right now .... on brand new corsair ssd 64gb....

Canonical's support for 10.10 ended on April 10. I believe what happened is a bug on Canonical's end. The OS is probably trying to link to Ubuntu servers for updates and it's receiving a reminder to update to the 11.04 (which is normal) but after that it's not able to retrieve the updates fully for 10.10 and the OS is getting borked. The last part shouldn't happen normally, so that's why I suggested installing with no Internet connection.
 
installed Ubuntu 11.10 desktop in a VM on my ESX host this weekend (4 vCPU, 4GB) including all current updates.
followed the instruction on sharing, downloading and configuring the client and installing BFS from page 1.
it's currently running SMP units at 10~12K PPD
haven't seen a single issue yet, even monitoring through HFM on a windows system (through the share on the ubuntu guest) works like a charm :)
 
Thanks for a nice guide :) However, I have a problem installing HFM.net... I do exactly as described here, but the command "mv HFM*.* hfm.zip" gives me "mv: target 'hfm.zip' is not a directory"

Any ideas? :)

Run command

ls *.zip

to check if you have the HFM zip file (HFM%20Release%200.6.2.336.zip)
If not, issue the command wget again.
 
I've got it (although there are no %20's listed, just spaces). I did also download a different version, 0.9.0.548.zip - should I delete that one (and if so, how? :p )
 
nvm, it works now. Didnt realize mv just renamed the file, so I did that manually. Te only issue i have now is that i can't access the shared folder from my win 7 main rig.
 
If you follow the instruction (running SAMBA and share FAH folder), you should be able to run HFM on win7 and pull data from your ubuntu box(es) as well as other rigs (windows)
 
I've been trying to perform the steps of Post #3 for BFS on a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS machine, no workie. Don't have time to post details.

Is it because I am using 10.04 not 10.10 or are the links in the instructions broken and there are better ones now?

I have no experience with 10.04LTS, but these guides are still current. I have used them on 10.10, and 11.04, and tjmagneto has confirmed 12.04 compatibility.

Note: I have never been able to get the BFS implementation to work properly in 10.04, but I also didn't try very hard. To get it to load, change this:

to this:
