Ubisoft pulls new titles from Steam

Not to mention some games are on steam as well as other emerging platforms like GoG (CDRT's own Witcher series, Wasteland, Classic D&D enhanced remakes, etc.).

I buy games from online distributors not because I forgot about DRM (given the choice, I would rather have GoG versions of the game rather than Steam), but because they offered convenience. I don't mind if half the indie titles on steam are crap, because I won't buy them anyway, but at least I know they are out there.

It is also a good place for me to find English games (something not so easily done in Non-English speaking country), and above all, they offer online storage of my games. I know if I don't want to play a certain anymore, I wouldn't think twice about uninstalling it, I know I can reinstall the game as long as Steam is in business, unlike hard copies where it is entirely dependent on me backing up those games.

With all this bitching, why hasn't anyone commented that Ubisoft games are still on Steam.

Not the new titles. Search for Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed Unity, etc. They've been pulled for new sales. I suspect the conversation went a little something like this:

Ubisoft: Valve, its been a real blessing letting UPlay coattail ride Steam until baby could take its first steps, but baby's all growed up now and we've got major titles about to ship, so unless you'd consider dropping your cut to 7% from our previously agreed upon 18%, then while we realize baby's going to go through extreme pain like the kind you get walking through chinatown in a chihuahua suit, baby's gotta walk. You understand ofcourse.

Valve: You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you. I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around, turned you into someone new...

By that reasoning, no one should sell their games on Amazon either since Amazon is "taking their profit".

If the game maker can cut out the middle man and sell the game themselves. Then ya they should. More profit for them.

The point was only that UPlay wouldn't exist without Steam.

It's certainly easy to say now that "games should just be DRM free" since we actually have new PC games to talk about, but back in the middle-late 2000's PC games piracy was at an all time high and publishers were bailing out on their PC development plans in droves, many announcing they were focusing future titles on consoles exclusively. Within 2-4 years a lot of those same publishers saw the PC gaming resurgence that Steam did a huge part to make happen, and once again began including PC in their platform stable. I do love how everyone forgets this.

Xbox360 / 3DS were also HUGE in piracy. Why didn't devs back out there then? Steam didn't save PC gaming :/

Piracy will always be an issue. But the gaming industry is the biggest entertainment money builder between music / movies.. Piracy isn't hurting it that much.

Not for a long time, and there were still enough squeakers buying the $60 games that the spillage was tolerable. Ratio of lost sales on consoles due to piracy has been a fraction of what its been on PC. If that wasn't the case, publishers wouldn't still hold up consoles as the holy grail.

Its also a false equivalent, because the barrier to entry for playing a pirated Xbox360 game (opening up console and flashing firmware to optical, xkey, whatever) is certainly higher than the simple act of dragging & dropping a compromised executable into a folder.

I never purchased new AAA games on STEAM anway. They're just ridicilously overpriced. I can get any new game for 30-40% less in retail, than on STEAM here in the EU. So I don't really give a crap.

Not to speak for anyone else...but I think folks are really resistant to the proliferation of distribution/DRM platforms for each publisher. We have learned that installing tons of stuff, particularly stuff that is peering under the hood of your system, from lots of different outfits is just not a good idea.

Personally, I even resisted Steam for several years. There is just no way in hell I am going to run Steam, UPlay, Origin, GFWL...oh yeah, they shut that one off, stranding peoples games, at least temporarily.

You get the idea.

I paid $60 for Rocksmith, and have NEVER been able to access all the features because they require UPlay and it is not worth it to me to install more bloat.

Just because I bought your product does not mean I am going to give you access to my system/make yet another goddammed account/get your spam/etc.

Not happening, and somehow I manage to entertain myself just fine.

My thoughts exactly. Is every cut-rate publisher going to come out with their own fail network now? On top of that none of those other networks are going to talk to each other. Some friends and family are on Steam - people don't hang out on Uplay or Origin.

Without Steam you lose the legal family game sharing, co-op and PVP with Steambros, big picture mode, game trading, publishing videos, guides etc., and if you are into collecting achievements, it's sort of pointless unless the game is on Steam.

I'd like to see Ubi and EA try the same thing with Microsoft and Sony, just tell them "your Xbox Live network is nice and all, but we are gonna do our own Ubi-box network so AC and FC4 players will be walled off from their console buddies"

So is this going to be the new trend now? Have 25 different sales platforms like steam with every studio that releases their game? UBisoft's UPLay is complete and utter shit. I never had issues with Steam or Origin. I wont have more two programs like Steam and Origin.

Even if you buy a Ubisoft game on Steam it will force you to sign into UPlay, so being on Steam is kinda pointless, unless if I'm missing something here, I don't see the big deal about this?

And I don't plan on buying any Ubisoft games because I think UPlay is garbage but not as bad as GFWL.

Some people buy their games from Amazon, GMG, etc despite needing to run the associated DRM software.

Have options on where to make your purchase is always a good thing.

I was done playing their games anyways after Watch_Dogs bs..

I preordered FC4 on Steam because I've loved every Far Cry (yes, even FC2, shut up), but if it vanishes from my library I'm not going to reorder it on uplay. And not because I refuse to use anything other than Steam or have had problems with uplay personally because I haven't, but because I won't support them holding games to ransom in order to bolster a service no one asked for or wants.

This is dumb regardless of who is responsible.

I've had good times with Origin, Steam, and Uplay and I've had glitches with all three as well.

I dread the idea of every developer of having their own digital service. How silly can it get after a point? I don't exactly relish the idea of any one company having dominance, either, whether it's Valve or anyone else but I surely wish there was a more eloquent solution vs the way it seems this trend is going.

Man, now I wish I had stepped up and pre-ordered sooner. So it is still in your library at this point?

So far it is, and from what I've read it hasn't actually been removed from anyone's library yet. I preordered on a whim months ago, which isn't something I would necessarily endorse, but I'm quite looking forward to playing it so fingers crossed...

If they yanked the titles for good... that's a big if.. I can't imagine how those preorders could be fulfilled and I would figure refunds would have to be coming before too long.

There needs to be some kind of news or communication about this today from someone.

for those that pre-ordered before the games were pulled, they're not going to remove the titles from anyone's Steam Library...I remember the same thing happening awhile back with the Crysis titles which were pulled from Steam...you could still play them, it just prevented any new purchases

Interesting.

The fact that nothing has happened yet hopefully suggests this is a temporary deadlock of some kind and is still being hashed out.

If they don't allow me to buy them through Steam I simply won't buy them. I don't like Ubisoft's titles enough to split my library even further. Sorry. With Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3, Evolve and other games I want coming out this winter, I won't be bored.

I got the Crew Beta on PC... I couldnt even play it because I couldnt even connect to their stupid network. Tried for days. Deleted it... now I just got the Beta for the XBOX One... we'll see if its any better.

I think its a stupid move... there are more steam members/users than ANY other game company/site/service/etc on the planet

Honestly I have issues with uPlay and I consider the "client" a POS. I completely expect to have an unplayable AC Unity next week at launch due to their servers being slammed and them not doing anything about adjusting for the launch load. Have they even once had a major uPlay launch title that went smoothly? I can't remember a good launch happening once yet where their DRM didn't screw a good portion of their end users.

Some questions I'm not seeing solid answers to... but maybe I missed something.

1.) What happens for those who already pre-ordered these games on Steam?

2.) Is this Steam's doing, Ubi's doing, or a combination of the two?

3.) Is this temporary while a solution to some sort of problem is being resolved, or is this the end of new Ubi titles on Steam?

Will you be able to purchase Season Pass DLC and DLC not included in the Season Pass if the games are yanked? I can't imagine that the option to purchase DLC will still be there after UBISOFT removes the games. I don't believe that DLC purchased with UPLAY has worked on Steam and vice versa.

Well, the only games I actually liked were Rayman and their Flashback remake, so no loss for me. I can't say I wanted any of their new games at all. Good riddance! I used to really like Ubisoft sometime in the Amiga and early PS and PC era. I haven't been interested in any of there games in a long time.

Don't know whats going on? But I see Farcry 4 on steam. Looking at the page now?

Usa here.

Games are still on the Steam site when viewing from Canada. Seeing FC4 and AC:Unity both still available for pre-order.

Well that sucks. I really want to play FC4 but I'm not about to buy it except on Steam (and like under $20). UPlay needs to die asap, not start selling exclusives. Arg.

Gamespot initially reported that Ubisoft said the game will not be available on Steam in UK for the moment. Later on it was gone world wide.

So, either they've sort it out, or the problem still remains in UK only (and they accidentally pulled from all region).

Maybe someone from UK can confirm it.

Nice!

But...

Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Uplay Account Required

A whole lot of NOPE.

Its been like this for a while. It doesn't matter if you're launching the game via steam, it still requires uplay.

At least legally and legitimately: You can't escape Uplay even if you buy the games on Steam.

While I sympathize with the "split library" points and so forth there really isn't anything gained that's substantial past that best I can see and I'm saying that as someone who has bought most of these games through Steam myself.

I cannot stand this crap. It fully ruined GTAIV, made Test Drive Unlimited annoying, and it makes UBI games unplayable. I don't get the everybody needs a storefront shit. Steam sells cross publisher, so just use it. gah! This shit is almost as insidious as the DLC/Pass shit they are pushing now.

I don't get the everybody needs a storefront shit.
Umm, money. It's that simple. Steam takes like 18-30% of the sell price, so Ubi wants to keep that for themselves.

Anyone think their games launch will go smooth this time around? I guess we'll find out Tuesday when AC Unity launches if they are competent enough to pull it off for the first time.

Thank god! That will prevent me from buying games that look god just to discover they're Ubisoft titles. DOH!

Same case for any Ubisoft PC game since 2011 or so. They simply readded it to Steam. My guess is Valve removed them as Ubisoft may have violated the terms for selling accidentally.
