TV Accurately Portraying Computers & PC Gaming

Would have been better if the chick had Vega's rig:

Him: "Is that Quad SLI 580s?!?"

Her: "No, its Quad SLI 3GB 580s, on a 990X..."

Him: "Oh thats so awesome. OMG 3x 30" LCD's in portrait! Thats 4800x2560 resolution right?"

Her: "Yeah they're but debezeled, and (tauntingly) its 5080x2560 bezel corrected..."

Cue swanky porn music...

That is a typical episode of NCIS. Everything computer related on that show just makes me roll my eyes.

16 cores: Check
10 meg pipe for faster response time: Check
High scores in every MMO: Check
DRAGON CASE: TRIPLE-CHECK

Legit as fuck.

Hmm, I still think one of the best small clips from a movie that I've seen for computers was "The Town".

Spoiler:
When they rob that first bank, they sabotage the security camera system by disconnecting all the SAS drives and fry them in the microwave.

PWNED.

Come on guys, everyone knows that this is the most realistic potrayal of computers and computer geeks ever...

OH COME ON! No one caught on to her "needing the fat pipe" ? REALLY!!???

I saw that episode. That's exactly what she wanted. She wanted the McGeek's fat pipe. And like a true nerd he said no. Gibbs FTW!!!! My favorite show.:D

I was flipping channels the night that episode aired and stopped just bc of the description of the show and saw this only to lmao while rolling my eyes.

Blows me away how badly the writing is for these shows. I loved how they used a case painted up with flames etc to make it seem like all "PC Gamers" have computers that look like that.

I'm sure old people and those with no clue 90% or more of the general public believed the crap that the actors said. Hell the actors may even believe what they said to be accurate, hip and truthful.

Wonder if anyone here watched the show "Conquest" in the History Channel. The host Peter Woodward is a recognized Hollywood fight master and he constantly bashed Hollywood for their inaccuracy in regards to weapons. Seems being inacurate and lazy is a tradition.

I usually start getting glassy eyed when the talk computer. However, Abby can crack my encryption any day of the week!!

Man, be glad you didn't watch the rest of the show.

The underlying plot was that a game programmer had included a program inside every release of "Fear Tower" which used all "15 million" computers it was installed on as a distributed computing network to "crack the Pentagon's six layers of firewalls".

The best part is at the end when one agent empties his pistol into the hackers "mainframe" to end the attack. The computer gives one dying gasp and he shoots one of the monitors to put an end to it.

Worst episode ever!

sorry just having a laugh at the geekiness of pointing out technical errors of a tv show on the internet. i mean i do it all the time with my missus but she just rolls her eyes at me and says stuff like "all the characters have super powers and you're talking about the technical inaccuracy of a computer program? IT'S FICTION... NOT REAL!"

Good fiction gets the non-fiction backstory and details right.

Oh, can't forget the graphical representation they had of the attack happening:

Each firewall would explode once it was "hacked".

I was roflmfao. I couldn't believe all it took was for Gibbs to shoot the monitor to end it all.

God I hate that show. Every damn time I explain to my girlfriend that something technical is not possible she simply replies, "McGee can do it."

*McGee = Jackass guy from that video. He can hack your floor lamp via piggybacking off your neighbors wireless and then routing through your carpet fibers. >_<

Yeah, that had to be one of the worst episodes. Only other one that came close was a blackout that took out power for a few days for somebody to take out a server and replace it with another one to steal all the data going to the government offices.

yeah they always seem to be able to hack into anything from anything.

Just in case you guys don't know, the writes intentionally write this "bad" to see what they can get away with.

Those in the know laugh at it and are expected to, those who don't and think its real are the ones they are trolling.

I do believe there is some sort of one-up'ing competition between a few shows about "bullshitting" tech stuff.

I think it's more likely that they just don't have a clue and they care just enough to make it sound plausible.

to be fair, if they used legitimate dialogue you guys would be tearing that apart too.

I actually like the show but I was in the Navy so that helps and for the recoed anytime the show has anything to do with computers it just shows the writers dont have a clue about the real world and computers.

Where the hell did she get a 16 core cpu from? Probably stole an engineering sample.

NCIS is one of my favorite shows. I am willing to let some of it slide because it is still a TV show after all. It is the best one in my opinion when it come to dealing with tech though. Law and Order barely has any, and CSI is wayyy out there.

That is fantastic, do you have a source?

Would make the scene in a different episode where McGee and Abby use the same keyboard more bearable. (Two people equals twice as fast oh em gee!)

I call BS. If she really was at the top of all those MMORPGs, she wouldn't have a real human in her apartment or house, let alone any time to actually talk to them.

She coulda combined two 8-core server CPUs on a dual-socket server board. Woulda been hella expensive, though.

A thread on reddit explained that the writers for several of the top crime-scene drama TV shows regularly do their best to out-bullshit one another and get away with it. Take it with a grain of salt, but it's a perfectly believable scenario to me.

its like saying "oh youre that person that won the gold medal in every event in at the last olympics." at least narrow it down to the best player in ONE game, instead of just saying shes the best at all of the MMORPGs in the world. :p i hope that thing about writers out-stupiding each other is true, cuz that would make this way funny instead of just dumb.

this
as an avid ncis watcher, the computer talk on this show is just retarded hence why i don't see this funny anymore.

NCIS is pretty much one of the finest shows on TV. Gibbs is the man. Also, McGee is a twig of his former self :)

Yea, LOL at the techy parts, but whatever. You guys make it sound like technology s the only haven for inaccuracy on TV. Newsflash, you aren't special. TV dramatizes everything, it's just that you all know about tech, so you only notice the tech flubs.

Stop getting your panties twisted and enjoy a good story. Or don't, and nerd rage all you want ;)

Heck, if you want to rage at a show, CSI has been ripe for the picking for years. Not even just tech stuff, I've seen them use different model cars between different takes of the same scene (An episode where a Hummer ran over a Fiero: In one angle, it was a fastback, in the other, standard Fiero. Really?).

My favorite crime show, Criminal Minds, have its own share of IT inaccuracy like how that tech girl never clicks the mouse and only types away on the keyboard :p Sometimes we just have to pretend like we didn't know all of that about computers and just play along with the show.

I found that the profiling part was kind of accurate though after watching a documentary on 3 early real life cases which they required the FBI profiler to help nab the serial killer.

Almost all TV shows are like that, anytime something related to science or technology comes up.

Yeah, it certainly does. I think my personal favorite was when Garcia was psyched that a CCTV security office had a single computer with a top-of-the-line nVIDIA consumer graphics card in it. Picky, I know, and there are more extreme examples (like random remote computer control), but some stick out like a sore thumb when you're a person like us, especially in a show like that which seems pretty well-researched.

That said, I forgive Criminal Minds for the same reason you do, I think. They play everything else straight, or at least to thought-provoking means to make a point about psychology or human nature. They attempt to make things plausible; it's more rare for them to make a lazy exception just so a plot will work. Most implausibilities are purposeful and played for laughs to lighten the otherwise serious tone. Also, I give them props for having a principal character outside the normal definition of appealing. Garcia essentially is Abby (the outside character whom gives the 'ah-ha' moment), but I actually enjoy the former quite a bit more because the conclusions have established context and are much less random. Blasphemy, I know, that the character doesn't need to be a sexy goth for it to work.

I think the important thing to realize about Criminal Minds, as well as others, is that using non-layman technology/science is the easiest way to produce a (sometimes unnoticed) deus ex machina resulting in advancing the plot/character development. Also, it's an easy way to provide levity without sacrificing credibility to the core concept. In reality, most people don't catch why most of it doesn't make any sense, and if they do, they don't really care. It's not why they watch the show.

Oh yeah, and I absolutely adore Beth Riesgraf; hilarious and adorable. She's the best part of LEVERAGE imo, which is a perfect example of the above. That whole show is ridiculous on every level. I don't care. It, and it's characters/personalities, are fun. In my mind NCIS is one gigantic piece of fail, but that's just me. I know there's plenty out there that enjoy it's mix of (apparently?) funny/sexy/drama/sleuthing. I like my high-drama/intellectual and unrealistic concepts mostly mutually exclusive.
