What is the best way to draw attention to Twitter? Obviously it would be to ban the service from your country and stir the citizens to stage massive protests. That’s exactly what has happened in Turkey in an attempt to quiet administration critics. How’s that working out for you so far? :D

But the action has already sparked significant backlash, most notably on Twitter itself. Users in Turkey have found ways to circumvent the block by tricking their computers to think they are outside the country.

Eradicate twitter? I hope they succeed.

+1! That's one less dumb icon that loads on lots and lots of websites. Now if Google would just give up on their crappy social network, Facebook would die in a fire, and MySpace would finally make a comeback, we could get on with our lives.

never used twitter, instagram, or any of that other new age shit... and as much as I hate them all..... is this guy REALLY that retarded to think he can eliminate social media from his country?

For being some supreme dictator/leader he sure has a shitty grasp on the concept of banning something only makes it more desirable.

“We’ll eradicate Twitter,” he said. “I don’t care what the international community says. Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic.”

I get the feeling that Erdogan has no idea what Twitter is or how it works. You would have to nuke your own country into a glass parking lot to get rid of it.

The fact that he says "power of the Turkish Republic" makes me lol. That country has always been garbage, I remember them arresting some tourists for taking a rock as a souvenir.

Yup, Twitter is like herpes. It never leaves no matter how much you want it too.

Mr. Erdogan says, "We will bury you."
I don't subscribe to this point of view.
Don't the Turks, love their Twitter, too?

(Apologies to Sting)

Next step is to eradicate the citizens that use it and problem solved.

Never mind...there is a lot of political "background" here guys and well connected with what is happening in Middle East and Europe right now...interesting times ahead.

Make no mistake, no country is exempt from this behavior. If by some off chance people in this country started to rise up you would see the exact same thing happen here. The mechanism is already in place.

Right now, dissidence is handled on a case by case scenario. You just ban accounts or remove information as needed. But if things ever started to spread to wide scale public support the only effective method would be to remove the ability to communicate all together.

To a government the Internet is the most dangerous thing ever created, second only to spoken word.

I don't post on Twitter but I kinda like it when a service is down it's the best place to get quick info without being overloaded with unnecessary crap.

I don't really use twitter that much, but from what it seems like, it's probably very useful in these crisis situations. Otherwise the government would not be trying to block it.

So I wish the citizens luck in continuing to get around all the blockings.

These situations are a reminder of why it's important we continue to fight bills like SOPA, the TTP and whatever they keep calling these things, because the US is trying to do the same thing as other countries. The issue is, the US does not just block sites, they actually take them down completely. So it's even more dangerous in a way.

ok collegeboy69, you've never used them but you hate them all.

Yup -- I see enough annoying twitter and instragram crap sneak it's way into my facebook newsfeed via friends, and I use neither service.

On top of that, I see the quality of what exactly goes on in these services and to me it's quite literally a bunch of nonsense fluff. It's great a some guys were able to become billionaires from it, but there is quite literally not a single scrap of information or interesting pictures I've ever seen on these services.

And the sprinkles on that last topping -- I like to think of myself as someone who does not crave or need external validation during my day to day happenings. Posting random pictures or thoughts and hoping someone likes or follows them? Sorry, I have wayyyyy better things going on in my life that crap like that.

I've never done any drunk driving, but I know I hate drunk drivers.

In before ignorant twitter bashi... Looks like I'm too late.

Just because you haven't found it useful, which it is, doesn't mean it is a shitty service.

Not really. He took artifacts dating back to ancient Roman times. It is illegal to remove items of historical value from any country without prior permission from the authorities.

Anyway, once it was determined that the man was not attempting to smuggle these items but had made an honest mistake, he was released.

Social media is pure trash and I feel like it's actually influencing how people interact offline. I mean, people seem to be outrageously loud and have the stupidest fucking conversations nowadays. Laughing at shit that isn't even funny, constantly trying to draw attention to themselves, etc.
