I am in the midst of prepping for a virtual overhaul of my PC. On the list is a new monitor, as I am using a 19'' Samsung ginormous CRT.

My uses will be mostly general PC use(music/movies/internet), and gaming but nothing in terms of first person shooters. I have heard that the Dell 2408WFP has horrendous lag, is this true? I am pondering these:

Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP
Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24"
Planar PX2611W 26''

I am also open to other ideas, and see a lot of people who recommend the BenQ 2400HD. How does that stack up against the ones I have listed? Once again, I don't need crazy fast response time for FPS shooters, I am just looking for a very crisp, vivid display with no ridiculously overbearing lag issues. I want something very nice which will last me a long time, hence my price range.

For that price range, there's nothing to consider other than the HP LP2475W. Best monitor that can be had for $600 shipped. 'Nuff said. :D

I would recommend getting a refurb Dell 3007 - look at Hotdeals section for more info. I am very pleased with mine.

Dell 3007WFP-HC uses a very good S-IPS panel, but in terms of color accuracy and all-around performance, it is still not as good as the LG H-IPS panel in the HP LP2475W that I mentioned earlier. Not to mention that the OP is looking for a 24" monitor and the Dell is about $150 more expensive.

Refurb Dell 3007 is $749 which is within the price range ($600-$800). Yes, I know OP is looking at 24in, but I thought I would mentioned that there is a 30in within OP's price range.

Dell 3007WFP-HC uses a very good Samsung S-PVA panel, but in terms of color accuracy and all-around performance, it is still not as good as the LG H-IPS panel in the HP LP2475W that I mentioned earlier. Not to mention that the OP is looking for a 24" monitor and the Dell is about $150 more expensive.

You're right, but its still $150 more than the HP and the quality is less. So he has to decide between smaller size and superior quality or larger size and very good quality. I assume that because he specified 24" in the thread title, that he's looking for a 24" monitor.

The dell 3007wfp-hc uses and S-IPS panel not a PVA panel. It is currently the best gaming monitor in existence IMO because it is 30" and has almost no input lag. Get it, you know what they say, once you go 30...

You're right. My mistake.

The 3007WFP-HC refurb is an insane deal right now and definitely worth your consideration. I just upgraded to one from a 24" PVA panel and love it. Played some Left 4 Dead on it with the system in my sig @ 2560x1600 with most stuff maxed out and it runs without a hitch. I got my 3007WFP-HC in mint condition with a three-year warranty for $686 shipped. Make sure you pick up a 15% off coupon if you go for it.

But one thing you also might want to consider, since you mentioned you want this for low-lag gaming, is whether you would typically run the games you play at native res on a 30" (2560x1600). If not, you'll be scaling down and introducing display lag or an extra burden on system resources at some point in your display chain, so it may be better for you to get a sub-30" and play games at whatever your screen's native res is.

Don't the 30" S-IPS panels have uniformity and bleed issues?

Some of the later generations do. That's why I went with the H-IPS panel in the LP2475W. It's very new (released just this year) and H-IPS is an improvement over the S-IPS panels. Also has very low input lag (only 25 ms for an IPS panel), great contrast stability, and one of the best black depths.

All in all, here's how I see it:

If you need 30" - go with the Dell 3007WFP-HC

If you are content with 24" - go with the HP LP2475W

Thanks for all the good info guys. I don't really know if I will ever use a 30'' monitor in terms of having a system to drive it, but I am pondering an i7 setup so I guess I should think about it.

But thanks for all the great info guys, I will definitely check out the HP and the refurb deal. Thanks!

Not only does the 2408 have lag, it ghosts. I can't use a VA panel as my main screen for that reason and would even take a TN panel over one.

I'd say get the planar or the ds263n or the hazro equivalent.

They have no input lag, you can find them at a decent price, and the color accuracy is superb.

The only bad thing about the Planar PX2611w is color banding issues when playing console games at 1080p.

If you do not plan on playing any console games (PS3, XBoX), then you don't need to worry.

it sounds like the 30" could be a good option, as others have said. no color intensive work? no consoles? don't need inputs outside your PC? go for it. i'd say the value proposition of the refurb 3007WFP-HC gives it the edge over a new 24" -- if all else is equal.

otherwise i agree on the HP 24".
