Trying to decide on dell u2311 vs u2412

I was pretty set on the 2311, but after doing a bit more research and now reading about the 2412, I'm not sure which one to go with.

It seems that a lot of these panels have QC issues, with reports of backlight bleed and glowing from the corners. I don't care if it glows at 45 degrees, but it's an issue if it happens when I'm looking directly at the monitor.

It's hard to make a decision with such little info out about the 2412. 10e's reports look promising, but some others have reported glow issues.

Has anyone been able to compare the 2 in person, or has read anything that would point towards one being better? I'd prefer a not too heavy AG coating, but I'm guessing they're probably pretty similar in that aspect?

Anyway, any thoughts on which way to go would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance:)

I'm pretty happy with my u2311h, its got no dead/stuck pixels and has a minor backlight bleed that you can only tell when your looking for it. My 2 Nec minors are the same panel and just fine too. I might of just been lucky to get 3 good monitors on the first try though. I was looking at the dell 23'' vs 24'' last year and 23'' is just a lot better value for the money since its a lot cheaper. I can't really say compared to the 2412 though. Its seemed to me like you pay a lot more for not enough extra value, considering the 24'' price puts you about halfway give or take some towards buying a second 23''

I was in a similar position (u2311 vs u2412m), and I ended up buying the 2412m for the following reasons
1. It wasn't that much more expensive (320+tax)...actually that's the normal price of the 2311
2. It is 16:10, and therefore has 120 more pixels vertically which is always a plus.
3. It's bigger
4. If it indeed has backlight bleed problems, I should be able to exchange it.

Note that I haven't received them yet and probably won't for another week or so since I just ordered them yesterday. I kind of wish it kept the styling of the u2311h, etc, since I really like that look, but oh well.

I had similar situation and ended up ordered 2412M will be here on Tuesday

u2311h is better for price.
u2412m can be better if u search absolute 16:10 format.

Take this with a grain of salt. Actually, have a cup or two.

If you can wait, the bunch of us who actually ordered them this week will be getting them in the next week (and some this week who ordered beforehand). We'll be able to give you more information on the 2412m then, since there aren't yet that many people with them. senna has just been bashing the 2412m through the entire 2412m thread anyways.

Also, the 2311h normal price is no cheaper than what I paid...

u2412m is + 1 inch but in a different format size.
the difference with u2311h is smaller than an other 24" 16:9 monitor.
16:10 is good for professional job but can cause some issues whit external devices as console and have a different FOV in the games.

U2311H is around 200€ and u2412m around 320€, the difference is 40-50% for have +1inch ? if u like specially u2412m is different but for price / quality the u23 is better for me.

the Ag coating is an important factor here.

NOTE : 200$ for an IPS monitor is ultra cheaper, can be normal for a TN monitor but not for an ips or va or others, normal price is around 400-500$, below is cheaper.

I know the different resolutions and screen sizes, neither of those is a huge deal to me. I'd probably pick 1920x1080 if I had to choose, but I don't care that much, and the 1 extra inch on the 2412 pretty much cancels those 2 factors out for me. I'm really just looking for which one has better image quality and less backlight bleed/glow

No one can tell you that. Buy 3 of each and pick the best one if you want to get obsessive. ;)

All LCDs are a crap shoot when it comes to this. From $120 cheapos to $5000 top line LCD TVs.

Go read AVSforums in their LCD TV section exact same discussions for absolute top of the line TVs.

Find another criteria to decide upon, and order one, because this one is beyond your control.

When you get it don't get obsessive. If you take long exposure photos of near black screens in the dark you are going to find some bleed on every panel.

Instead set the brightness where you will actually use it (not the high out of the box setting), next find your darkest game or other actual content and actually use the monitor for it's intended purpose. Now if you spot bleed that is annoying, consider exchange, return.

But go looking specifically for BLB, you almost certain to find it.

You can run games and media at 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 panel.

Yes, but it can stretch which causes problems.

Also. Who wants black bars? Especially considering the horrible back light bleed of the U2412M. The black bars will partly be more white than black. Very distracting when you need to focus on the game, movie or whatever it may be.

Older Ultrasharp panels have had 1:1 aspect options, so I suspect the newer ones will carry this tradition.

Black bars and backlight bleed never really bothered me in movies or games. Then again, my monitors never really had significant backlight bleed.
