Top 15 best stories for a video game

Now of course there are a ton more, but I have to say this is a pretty respectable list. And ya I even have my own eyebrow raised to a 3 of them, but still pretty good.

If you click the link to the actual article (not my link to kotaku but what they link to), they do pretty much spoil any secrets a game might have. So if you don't know the story, you've been warned.

I'm just happy to see Silent Hill 2 and Fallout 2.

So what would you add?
 
GTA: San Andreas...Remove. Legacy of Kain to Raziel Soulreaver I would add.
 
GTA is laughable.
Portal is a good game but top 15 storyline I think not.

KotOR & The Longest Journey are good.
 
I'm not generally a fan on games heavily based on story as it can be detrimental to gameplay (such as Final Fantasy) but KOTOR, Grim Fandango, Fallout 2 and Planescape are some of my favorite games of all time. They just happened to have amazing gameplay along with the excellent stories.
 
If there was a "best level" category, Portal's last level would definitely be it :)
 
Planescape: Torment has the greatest story of all time.

I would replace Bioshock with the System Shock series story.
 
Eh, any list of best stories that doesn't have Betrayal at Krondor isn't complete.
 
I had to laugh at the comment that said they would add COD4.
I have seen better storylines in low budget porns in languages I didn't understand..... and even then, the acting was better in the porn.
 
The best one on that list is bioshock.
I loved that story especially the twists.
 
Drop GTA and KOTR add Mafia and you have a good list. KOTR has good RPG but the story was sub par at best. A real RPG rehash. It shined in spite of its insipid story.

If any suggest Dues Ex I am going Postal!:D

Deus Ex and Myst definitely should have made that list. Most of the games on it are a joke.
 
Mafia, Final Fantasy VII (PS), Hitman series, and GTA series are my favorites.
 
Great to see Gabriel knight and TLJ on there.

Though I would have added Sanitarium and the Syberia series along with Mafia.
 
No Mafia, no Deus Ex, no Vampire: Bloodlines? Failed.

remove GTA, astro boy and portal and you might have a respectable list.
 
Metal Gear Solid definitely deserves a spot up there... GTA San Andreas though? :rolleyes:
 
As soon as I saw GTA San Andreas I stopped reading.

GTA San Andreas had one of the worst story lines of all video games, let alone the worst story line of the GTA franchise. To the point I lost complete desire to play it after a few hours. $60 down the drain. :rolleyes:

Half-Life (1 + 2) and DeusEx need to be included.
 
LOL, GTA San Andreas and Portal in that list is laughable.

Most of the other games, I never played, so I can't comment, but Bioshock, even if as a whole, is a mediocre game, does have a great story. Morrowind, Half Life 1, AvP2 and Undying should be in that list IMO.

To everyone saying FF VII, did you play any of the older ones? VII's story PALES in comparison. FF XII Is better than it by a long shot in terms of gameplay as well (not to say it is a bad game, it's amazing :p )

Portal... That's an interesting one... In ways I think it deserves to be there, in others I think it shouldn't be...
 
HL 1 +2 were ok.
Curse of monkey island and secret of monkey Island.
Space quest 1 and 4 and 5 were pretty good.
Star Control 2
Nwn: underdark.

hard to come up with a modern day title though.
X3 isn't bad. and just the whole X universe isnt bad, told a bit poorly, but the story isn't bad.
Homeworld was very good.
Starcraft was very good i think, including the brood wars expansion.

Played almost all and VII is still my fav ;) followed by IV and VI and then X
XII I like the game play but the story is boring me. I'll have to go back and finish the game but...just not caring about anything.

The FFs after FF7 were crap and I did play them all. FF3 and FF7 had good storylines but do not compare to a story like that of Planescape: Torment or Xenogears.
 
Anyone know anything about that Astro Boy game? I'm intrigued that a GBA game would show up on a list like that.
 
weird list

While i agree GTA : SA shouldnt be in there , it has one massive storyline.
