In most cases no. If your cable company assigns you two IP addresses it might be possible, but in the long run you're normally better off behind a router that does some basic firewalling (SPI even better).

Yes and No, you need one of each or a router with a built in switch to accomplish this in most cases...

you can use a switch, but each machine needs its own IP then, and normally costs extra.

if you have two nics in one computer you can use ics but with only one other computer you wont need a switch you can use a crossover cable.
