I'm exploring ways to add Thunderbolt to my rig. My mother board is an Asus X99 Sabertooth, and there is a 5 pin header for Thunderbolt on the motherboard. I see that Asus offers a PCI card, the ThunderboltEX, to add IOs. My question is, do I need a PCI card if the motherboard has a header in place already? Or is there is simpler gadget available that would simply allow me to run a cable from the header to an empty slot in my case?

Thanks.

You will need the addon card to get working thunderbolt. The header is just for communication between the motherboard chipset and TB controller on the addon card.
