Thunderbolt cable Male to Female Adapter - Do they exist?

I Haven't had any luck finding a thunderbolt male to female cable or an adapter. Any suggestions? Form the looks of it, it doesn't exist and I might have to make a custom cable.
 
Whats the purpose? Thunderbolt cables have controller processors in them so making one might not be as easy as making a usb cable.
 
I figured there would be some complexity to it. In my case, I need a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter with a longer cable. The apple version is only 2" - due to specific spacing for a case I'm building, I need a cable length of about 5".
 
Why not hack something for the Ethernet end? I'm not sure I'm picturing it properly, but that would be feasible.
 
Would a USB3 gigabit ethernet adapter not be a cheaper/simpler option? Or even a slower one if gigabit isn't required!
