If this has been discussed, just ignore.

My question is, why the anti-thread crapping policy? In other words, the forum is a great place to make contact with hundreds of other computer nerds looking to buy / sell/ and trade their way to upgrades. But not everyone looking in their is experienced. All of us were newbies at one point. So if someone comes in there, makes some ridiculous claim and asks a ridiculous amount, is it really that bad to call them out on it? I think protecting the integrity of the forum would be better served by allowing some public questions instead of prohibiting them.
just MHO.

If you have any problems with a thread or post, simple hit the little report a post
report.gif
button and all sorts of Mods and Admins will be on the case very shortly....that's all there is to it. :cool:

if you have a problem with an outragous price or that crap, just message them thats what the rule is for..

If I wanted I could sell 486DX cpu on fs/ft within the rules for 1000USD, its their item their price if you can find it cheaper online somewhere else good for you doesnt mean you have to complain on their thread about it..

Well put!

Fair enough. It just breaks my heart to see a newbie buying a used s478 3.2E P4 for $300, but i suppose getting ripped off is part of the game when you're learning the ropes. Such is life :cool:

I understand that. Just doesn't seem like that fits into the scheme for a site where 95% of the posts rely on the community helping each other. :eek:

No thread crapping helps the seller, but i'm sure there are times where it would have helped the buyer.

So your saying that if mc donalds sells a cheese burger for 99 cents, and burger king sells it for 75 cents, someone should tell them BK is cheaper?

It is about being a good buyer and finding the best deal yourself, people selling items in the FS/T are not a business, they ask what they feel it is worth, if you feel that you don't want to pay that much, find someone that has it cheaper, or, make an offer to them via PM.

It is no one's responsibility to tell you if something costs too much.

I think they should make a forum rule that says you must be 18+ to use the hard forums, this would help the adults more. Just because I think that, does not mean it will happen.

This is where a PM would come into the picture. There is no forum rule on expressing your opinion in private, just not in the thread itself.

The thing is that most deals are consumated in PM's. So if nothing is written (crapped) in the original thread, a potential buyer may never post in the thread.

I'm saying that it shouldn't be forbidden to say as much.

I have no problem with someone listing a product and a price and letting it ride out. But if someone makes a crazy claim about an item purposely trying to bait a newbie into paying 100% more than something is worth or can be had elsewhere, i don't see the problem just dropping a quick note and calling out the BS.

It's nobody's responsibilty to answer other poster's technical questions on the board either. We help each other because we enjoy it. Why should it be any different in the FS / FT forum?

actually, (the guy selling the rolex comes to mind), the mods are pretty reasonable about "thread comments" when it's pretty obvious that someone may be scamming/trolling... many of us commented in that thread, and it was allowed to pass... so if it's a blatant rip-off attempt by a seller (i.e. the 1000 bucks for the 486 example), i believe the mods exercise some common sense in regards to what they might consider "thread crapping"...

i believe what they are trying to avoid is a fs/ft thread devolving into "that's junk, why would anyone want that, buy this instead" mess (that already happens on enough intel vs. amd and ati vs. nvidia threads ;) )...

imo, of course... as usual, i could be out in leftfield somewhere...

Well, if you see a noobie getting baited in PM the noobie and give them a heads up.

That is an accurate description of the process. The FS/T forum is a place to offer items for sale or trade, not for a discussion of an unreasonable price, the seller or potential buyer's reputations or a better place to buy the item. It is strictly for the posting of a sale or trade and acceptance by another party. All comments should be on topic, which entails details of the item, terms of sale and method of shipping, etc and little else. The mods are responsible to rid the forum of off topic posts or non-genuine threads and to protect the other members from known trolls. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer/seller to take the proper precautions to assure a successful trade by following the guidelines outlined in the FS/T rules.

Just so you have an idea about trading, these are the posted guidelines from the FS/T rules page. If you follow these steps, you are almost certain to complete a trade without a problem, or at worst minimize problems that may arise.

~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quick Tips for trading ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(1) Always use delivery confirmation, and always keep the proof that you shipped.
(2) Always ask for a real name, home address, and telephone number. Verify it with a call or a search in the white pages.
(3) If the seller is suspicious, please search for info about him or contact a mod. If deal sounds too good to be true, chances are that it is.
(4) Don’t jump to conclusions, email the seller if you have problems, if you have their phone number, give them a call.
(5) If you feel that you’ve been scammed, you can file complaints about internet fraud directly with the FBI at their Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFFC) http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp. You can also go to www.usps.com and file a complaint for postal fraud, and most state Attorney Generals have an online internet fraud complaint form.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Avoiding Trolls~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(1) No matter what, get a name, address and phone number and then confirm the information by:

a. Phoning the telephone number and checking if it is actually them.

b. Going to www.switchboard.com or a similar site and check out if the last name matches the address. If it does not match, find out why from the trader before selling (the telephone may be listed to another party in the house) Chances are if they won't provide a phone number, something is up.

(2) Don't ship first without getting good references. You can get money back through different means if your money is taken, but your SOL if you ship before receiving payment.

(3) Use a credit card with paypal when at all possible. You're only liable for 50$ in damages if someone rips you off.

(4) If you cannot use a credit card, use a check since they are traceable and can prove your case if it comes down to contacting the police.

(5) Don't accept a cell phone for the phone number. It's much easier to change or cancel than a home phone number.

(6) Keep a record of all conversation with the person pertaining to the trade. It provides backup when having to deal with the police.

(7) Be wary of anyone with a recent forum registration date. Post count means little, date of registration does.

(8) If a deal seems too good to be true, chances are that it is......so be wary.

Well, looks like policy won't be changing anytime soon, so i'll give it a rest.

MajorDomo, the point of this thread wasn't that i don't understand the policy; more that i don't understand why the policy is the way it is. Thankyou for responding though.
