Thoughts on going from CF 7850s to single 680 4GB?

I've got an opportunity to pick up a EVGA GTX 680 4GB from a friend for $150. I know it's been fairly treated and never overclocked or anything. I'm considering doing it because I don't really feel like I'm getting the most out of my CF 7850s. I mean, it just seems like every time I have actually needed more power, the game hasn't supported SLI or CF. I only picked up the second 7850 for BF4, which I ended up not playing all that much.

Also, would it be worth considering just watching for a deal on a new 280X? I've seen some pretty good models for around $190 after rebate which would get me a new card with a warranty.

I would be selling my 7850s to recoup as much as I can.

Well go for it.. you could problem sell the 7850s for more than that.

I would say it would not be worth it to go to 280x from your current setup unless you are looking for a lateral change for single card stability.

I tried CF 7850s for a couple days. It wasn't worth it. CF 7970s on the other hand are a completely different story.

I would go ahead and do the 680. You should be able to sell the 7850s and get back right around 150.

If you are considering $190 for a 280X I would keep an eye out for a sale on a 290 instead in the low 200s. I think they've gone as low as $219 or close. For the 20-30 extra dollars more, it will be much better performance than any of your options listed.

I have no regrets going from 2 6870s to a single gtx 780. Granted it was a bigger jump that what you're looking at, but I also paid $500 for my card and kept my 6870s for my other PCs in my house.

Single more powerful GPU always wins. If I were you i'd go for the 680.

Well, he has agreed to $130 so I shouldn't be out anything if I end up not liking it as I should be able to get that back by selling my 7850s.

The 680 is right about 7950/280 performance (which is about 2x7850 performance), so $130 is quite reasonable given current pricing on used 280s and 280Xs.

Simply put, going 2x 7850 -> 680 will be a very satisfying user experience upgrade. Single card, more ram, better minimum frame rates, no hanky-panky with the specs :p, no need to worry about SLI driver support.. yeah - I'd pull the trigger on this one. The 7850s shoudn't be too hard to move at the right price.
