I live out in the middle of nowhere so getting DSL or cable was not an option. Well FINALLY I was able to get WIFI connection to my house. After cutting down 4 trees and digging a 100ft ditch I just now got the connection. It's really fast (it can get up to 3mbs). But this makes no sense; the guy said I can't play online games because he said that he doesn't have enough bandwidth yet for the games. I can easily play CS or DOD online (just tried it) so I don’t understand why he said that I can't play them.

IF I am playing the games…will he even be able to tell that I am the person playing the game?

You are paying him for the service right? Unless you signed some type of agreement, he cannot stop you from using your connection as you please. He can block ports, but that is about it.. until he gets you to sign an agreement saying such.

I can download fine. And he did say that by xmas he will have enought bandwith for us to play xbox live and online. But it seems to work fine...

The only problem you might have in gaming, is that if he is running some heavy stuff on his end, you might get some high pings. I am sure he has enough bandwidth, he just doesn't know it. One problem that I can forsee is if he has VoIP, and you are gaming. Those are two high-priority packet types, and the router might get confused. What kind of router do you have, and what does he have?

Unless he sniffers you, and knows what ports your games use, he can't tell if you are gaming or not.

I think you or the technician are confusing bandwidth with latency, which affects online gaming

Still, it wouldn't matter. The only one affected would be the gamer, in all probabillity.

VoIP is Voice over IP. Did I'm not usder standing what the 100ft ditch was all about. So are you patched into this guy's network then?? You can always go in and get teh Dlink 4300 router and then prioritize which packets are more important on the LAN between the both of you.

You should be fine. I bet you he just dosnt know that gaming (unless you are running a dedicated server, which is a different story) uses a fraction of the 3mbits that he has. One thing, is that you may get high packet loss because you are wireless, but thats probably a minor issue. You should be just fine.

I got the Linksys Wireless-G Router (for free ;) ) with speed booster.

The 100Ft ditch is the cable from my dish tower to my house. My dish tower gets its signal from the main tower.

I tried playing CS and it works fine. So it doesn't seem to be bugging me...I just dont want the guy calling or coming over to block the servers or taking me off line.
