This article makes me feel old...GameSpy

I never used the standalone application very much, but of course I played a lot of games that were powered by GameSpy. Counter-Strike in particular. For games like Quake and NASCAR Racing 1999 Edition I used Heat.net a lot.

I so hated gamespy, it probably contributed to me retreating from online play.

MPlayer = > GameSpy.

That is where I honed my Q2 skills and got invited to clan competitions.

Remember using Kali? We used that before GS as I recall.

That was a paid service IIRC. It simulated a LAN connection. I never had it myself. A buddy of mine used it for Diablo 1.

I used Gamespy back when it was quakespy with OG Team Fortress. We used to all chat using ICQ also.

I enjoyed playing Yarn and the other free games on there. IIRC there was a popular top-down 2-D futuristic team shooter that was pretty awesome, but I can't remember the name of it...

I was like 9 years old and attempting to go to Heat.net and it brought me to a porn site. Was likely my first exposure to porn.

I'm guessing ARC (attack retreive capture) basically you're a flying saucer looking thing and play CTF and similar gametypes. It was really fun but cheaters sort of ruined it. I liked it so much I actually made an Xbox 360 game similar to it.

I also remember somehow ending up at a porn site trying to play on Heat.net.

"Lets get it on with the killing!"

I remember it well. Also remember ms gaming zone. To get demo's you'd have to let it DL all night. I remember thinking "10MB! that'll take 24 hours!". And pray the dl didn't corrupt. We were also loading maps and shit via 3.5' floppy.

If you really want to feel old, look up SirDoom. I remember dialing up my local BBS systems (I don't even remember how I learned about them) to play laggy Doom + Heretic matches and text-based RPG's.
Even as rudimentary as Gamespy, Heat, Mplayer, Dwango, etc. were - they were light years better than that.
It's kinda funny how much I used to enjoy playing competitive FPS games and the lengths I'd go to. Now I can't stand 'em.

ImagiNation Network by Sierra. $160/mo for unlimited play between 6pm and 3am or so ;). 99 cents per minute off peak. Fun games on it though...

Compuserv and prodigy later...

I remember playing few games on Gamespy, cant remember what though
