I recently bought a Logisys bay device with three thermal probes. They are the flat wire type probes. Well I was thinking I could get good temp readings by putting one of the probes ON the heatsink nearest the CPU, but those readings were way off when the CPU was at load...so I have two questions.

1) Can i put one of these thermal probes between the IHS and the Heat sink and still have the heatsink perform as efficiently?

2) Presuming a "yes" to #1, How close can i get to center of the die of a Opteron?

I use Artic Silver's reccomended "large grain of rice" application method

In a word, "no"

Anything between the heatsink and the processor will impede heat transfer. Including thermal paste. You just use thermal paste because it's better than air.

*edit*
You may get a better reading if you can get the thermal probe under the cpu, but it's never going to be as good as the reading from the built-in probe.
