ps3 year one ring a bell?
Exactly, i think as game development takes longer to refine initially due to more complex technologies, that this will happen.

Nintendo is smart to hold off honestly. They will need to ride the wave of another consoles success to get their name out there again. Ever wonder why one street might have 6 stalls selling flowers? Right now Nintendo has their flower stall in development and is waiting for the other flower stalls.

Wouldn't surprise me if they try to peg a release of "Mario Kart 8" or equivalent at the release of a AAA title from Sony or Microsoft.

Competition is healthy.

You think Nintendo is going away, or the Wii U teletran8? Nintendo is going to do fine. Wii U will probably do at least better than gamecube in its life time.
Nintendo HAS to bring out a different console, they HAVE to kill off the Wii U. They have to follow the path the PS4/XB1 have laid out, because NEVER in the history of game consoles has any console been successful without a presence of 3rd party support has there been? They either drop out and go software only. Or they become a 3rd party multi-platform developer for the PS4/XBOX1, or get out a new more capable console that can make sales. Those are their only 2 options as I see it, because they're getting to that Dreamcast stage where they can't give the console away. Or 3 I do see a massive price drop after Christmas season to encourage sales growth. But if people don't want it, well they just will not buy it no matter the price. I see a 199.99 price in the next 2 months followed by imminent doom because they simply lack games anyone really wants. Notice I said GAMES, plural.

Let me further explain. The original Wii was a competitive console up until some time in 2011. On October 20, 2013 Nintendo confirmed it discontinued production of the Wii in Japan and Europe since there's no demand (or money) in it any longer. Why did the Wii U come out on November 18, 2012 the year after that? Nintendo was no longer making the money they loved making is why.

Now the Wii U has come and gone. (mostly because the PS4/XB1 killed it in a month, but also Ninty didn't listen to 3rd party developers) Plus they haven't made relevant money from a home console since that time, 3 whole years. They have to ride this fail-launch out at least another 6-12 months regardless because of the games in the pipeline, and their foolish pride. Wii U owners will get their MK8,SSBB,B2. And they might be getting a few random sales from Wii U owners on original Wii games in the meantime too, but we're talking in the hundreds to single digit thousands for their old software every week/month. Add in their third party support, which is really close to completely gone, and Nintendo has a recipe for a complete meltdown disaster the likes of Fukushima! If SM3DW can barely hit 1 million after Christmas, those games will tank also. So there's almost NO money in that Wii U machine any longer for Nintendo for 2014 and onwards no matter what happens.

We're moving into 2014 and by the looks of it Wii U will, tank tank tank! :D No seriously they will! There is no other way to play their hand anymore you think DOnkey Kong+Cranky Kong will sell more than Mario? No way in heck it will do WORSE! Then what wait all Summer for MK8 and all Winter for B2/SSBB/X/Fire Emblem? Think about that lineup, those games plus maybe 1 other surprise announcement game, and a couple of lower quality shovelware to go along with it that will be 2014 for you Wii U owners. That's IT. Those games will sell 500k or less each. While the COD series on PS4/XBOX1 sell more than all Nintendo titles combined. I mean come on! That's the world we are living in...

And traditional Nintendo stronghold of handheld market is shrinking fast.
3DS is actually going to sell less in 2013 then it did in 2012 despite Pokemon and MH4 launches.
Shrinking due to what? Not the Vita...

Maybe just mobile devices in general, but nothing really does what the 3DS does.

We covered this.

PS3 outsold Wii U in first year sales by a huge margin, cost two times as much and still saw shortages. It's not something you want to compare the Wii-U too.
The Ps3 never actually saw widespread shortages despite what Sony claimed (Penny Arcade and anyone with a camera took pictures to prove it), and Sony also produced far fewer consoles than Nintendo did.

Wii U is selling at dreamcast level to reach Gamecube status they would need to double monthly sales.

And traditional Nintendo stronghold of handheld market is shrinking fast.
3DS is actually going to sell less in 2013 then it did in 2012 despite Pokemon and MH4 launches.
Just in: Wii U has been doubling sales week per week in Japan, and in North America. Last week the Wii U sold 74,000 consoles, and the 3DS sold nearly 200,000 in a single week, just in Japan. No, the handheld market isn't shrinking, I think you're pulling numbers out of your ass again.

Why do some people feel that success is only measured by how many units a console sells compared to others? If the developer is making money and providing a good product, isn't that success in and of itself?

Also, I love how people think they can predict the future :p

At work right now so can't check myself, but besides the new Zelda game, anything else noteworthy from today's Nintendo Direct broadcast?

Nintendo is releasing this Retro NES game download thing today, where they modified 16 NES games into minigames and made changes, (ie Excitebike in the dark with your headlight on, etc), and stuff. Golf was made available for Wii Sports Club, they showed off more Mario Kart 8 tracks and characters, and Rosalina was announced as a new character for Smash Brothers. Also a bunch of 3DS stuff too.

They had region shortages, and your point doesn't do anything to address my overall comment. In fact your last sentence makes it look worse for Nintendo.

Today's Nintendo Direct tells me the Wii U is not "done".

If Nintendo is screwing up, it's by not hiring the marketing gurus that are telling everyone what's up right here on [H].

Sony expected to sell 6 million units by the fiscal year ending in March 2007. Only 3.68 million were sold, falling short of that mark.

I agree DKCTF looks far better than what I had imagined, and MK8 seem imho to be their best overall titles so far for the Wii U system. Boy it's taking them awhile, but since SM3DW their game quality is improving! I don't like the whole "outsourcing" for the newest Wii U Zelda, but "they" know they need games because they are bleeding money as a company. The gameplay style is very popular these days, so if it turns in higher sales who cares if they ruffle feathers, but the graphics look very original wii'ish, they need to polish them graphics up to a higher standard! If it's done really well it could push B2 sales higher or if B2 is out first and is really good, it should help push Hyrule Warriors up possibly in sales, but both those games "have" to deliver and cannot be launched to close to one another to help the sales/software drought. :)

The NES Remix is just sad imho. Exchanging the 8-bit Link and putting him in Donkey Kong Arcade. Why? It just seems pointless to me. Excitebike with less visibility! Why? That is going to bomb imho. The games should have truely been remixed with modern enhanced 2-D graphics rather than changing a minor detail or two like they seem to have done imho.

Wut?!

The Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors come together in new Wii U release for 2014

Saving the real Ninty Zelda and real Mario Galaxy 3 for the successor to the doomed Wii U? Wut!? Yeah bro I do think that's the plan at Ninty HQ, and lets face it, those games with PS4 level graphics = win. That's where I want to see/play the next Zelda/SMG3 not on the Wii U, sorry if you disagree but the graphics/artwork in SM3DW felt like next gen DS not a next gen home console.

Please stop pretending you are anything except a blind PS4 fanboy that has no fucking clue what he is talking about. As for these game with PS4 graphics? Eh. While some PS4 and XB1 games do look rather good it's not this huge "ZOMG amazing" jump between last gen, right now. Maybe I'm spoiled by the significantly better looking games on the PC but WiiU, PS4, XB1 graphics don't impress me in the slightest and I couldn't give less of a shit what platform a game is on as long as it turns out fun. Slightly better graphics in these games don't effect gameplay so I really do not care.

That's Miyamoto's philosophy, not so much graphics but gameplay mechanics, and he's absolutely a legend because of that philosophy and game output. So what title has Miyamoto worked on lately? Pikmin 3 is the only answer. He is considering retirement currently, possibly 1 more title for the Wii U is rumoured also from him.

But after DKCTF Retro studios should be hard at work with another Metroid for the Wii U going off their prior track record. Unless someone else is taking over the Metroid series for Nintendo, but if DKCTF took this long I'd say new Metroid 2015 at the soonest.

List of games developed by Retro Studios
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Metroid Prime: Trilogy 2009 Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns 2010 Wii
Mario Kart 7 2011 3DS
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3DS
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

I like Nintendo I just wish that gameplay mechanics philosophy and PS4 tech philosophy merged, and created a new Nintendo. ;)

Nintendo quite simply can't afford to compete with MS and Sony on a pure tech level. Nintendo has a lot of money sitting in the bank but MS and Sony are both tech empires with multiple sources of revenue to pull from and they can both afford to take losses or barely make a profit on systems. That said, I find it interesting that of the three Nintendo is the only one that you know can weather a system not being this huge mega seller. Sony would be pretty much fucked if the PS4 hadn't done well and MS' entertainment division STILL bleeds money.

That's fiscal year..... Which amounts to around 4 or possibly 5 months. It's sold double in half the time at two times the cost and never saw the sales crashes the Wii U has seen time and time again.

My point is irrefutable and can not be argued.

no no no....read a little further (I know it's hard but you gotta try)

from said article

Quarter 2 (ending Sep 30, 2007) sales1.31 total at end of quarter 5.63

Bold = me so you would understand the point....

it took 2 years 8 months and 19 days (that's 32.63 months to be exact) for the PS3 to surpass 23.91 million sales.....so that would be a paltry 733K a month lol... it is well known that PS3 sales did not really take off until the console hit $299... as the LARGE CHUNK came after it hit $299....lol....

You and Teletran8 need to quit before you emberrass yourselves any futher.....

oh week to week sales are up for the Wii U yet again.....

With $5+ billion in the bank and less than $2.5 mil in debt, they can afford to compete, but, they wont because they don't have to.

Speaking of embarrass it might help to use spell check and post a rebuttal because nothing you have said changes what I said. You're just side stepping and bringing up a completely different metric to make it seem like you know what you're talking about.

You don't.

You claim sales didn't take off until it hit 299 which is amusing because that is what the Wii U is at and it is STILL well below the sales of the PlayStation 3 at its original price.

Why do you keep trying to compare the Wii U to the PlayStation 3? You're going to get decimated by the facts every single time.

we know you're done when all you can do is say "wahh use spell checker"

the comparison is (because you are stuck on the wii u is done blinders) both systems are off to a slow start but in your *infinite* wisdom understood that, right?

PS3 sold through Q1 ending June 20, 2009 23.91 million units. Afterwards the PS3 sold 56.09 million units from July 2009 to now (roughly 52 months) for a monthly rate of approximately 1.08 million a month or roughly 48% increase in sales per month. Once again math > you

The Wii U quarterly sales are increasing but you seem to loverlook that.

The PS3 was running games with as much graphics in 2006 as your Wii U could handle in 2012 ;) The PS3 also launched with a larger HDD spec than the Wii U. Ouch.

Now YeuEmMaiMai, can you see why, the Wii U is an inferior cheap piece of hardware no one really cares about outside of the base hardcore Nintendo fans?

The PS3's were selling for near 2000.00 on ebay back in the day. Why? Because people actually wanted a next gen console (even back then), with next gen everything. The PS3 outsold the XBOX360 this year. Conversely the original Wii has been discontinued in UK and Japan because it is basically ancient technology now. (Almost 10 years old and had the lowest end hardware quality of all the 6th gen consoles with a kid friendly gimmick controller.)

Why? Because of the technology+games+price. Wii U has nothing in terms of modern technology, it's old tech with another kid friendly gimmicky controller. Most people don't desire an old throwback console with another gimmicky controller like a Wii U is, by today's standards. Most not all, your proof of that. The tablet controller ploy only fooled the hardcore Nintendo fans this gen, everyone else want Next gen graphics with a non-gimmicky controller, more advanced social online, and a wider variety of media apps.

The Wii U has a tablet for a controller and old played out games. No one wants that but the hardcore Nintendo fans that will accept anything Ninty makes available imho. So yeah that explains why the Wii U console was outsold by the PS3 console this year, old gimmicky tech = fails. So the Wii U can't pick up steam because it is already tapped out on what it can bring to the consumer, or else SM3DW would have been native 1080p, but you need a PS4 for that.

I recall the Wii selling for stupidly high amounts on Ebay as well. The PS3 sold for lots of money because it was new and people are idiots. Same reason why for a bit the PS4 and XB1 were selling at over $600. It has nothing to do with the system itself and is entirely due to it being the "new thing".

Gimmick or not the WiiU pad is one of the best controllers I've used in a long time. It feels great in my hands in a way the 360 pad and the DS3 never did (I haven't tried a DS4 or XB1 pad yet but I've heard good things). For all of Nintendo's weird design choices on controllers they are one of the few to get it right in terms of how it should feel in your hands.

Fact is, when Nintendo announces any new hardware at this point, Microsoft and Sony immediately stop what they're doing and try and copy it. Smat Glass and Vita support, anyone? Move and Kinect?

Hell, right now Sony fans are probably begging for some "Old, played out games" on their PS4. They have a bunch of poorly programmed sequels that were multi console releases, some poorly made exclusives, and a few downloadable titles. Holy shit, what a party you got there.

And what do you have to look forward to this year? More sequels? More multi console releases? Face it, the same thing you bitch about Nintendo doing, Sony has been doing the exact same thing. Except by the time Watch Dogs and Infamous: second son come out, Nintendo will have already released an increasingly greater number of exclusives, and from franchises that sell millions more.

But hey, you're focusing on a metric about how many consoles the Wii U has sold during the year immediately after its release (a metric that the Xbox 360 and PS3 weren't doing so well either), because it justifies how you already feel about the console, not because it means anything. The fact that the Ps3 was firmly in third place in total sales this generation? Irrelevant! It also had a slow start? Doesn't mean a thing! Many of the original "exclusives" people were really hyped for on the PS3, like Lair, ended up total shit? (although, let's be fair, bombs like that came out for every console in existence) Let's ignore those!

To me, it sounds like you're butthurt and are full of sour grapes, and are attempting to bask in schadenfreude for a perceived problem with a competitor's console. You seem to be oblivious that your chosen console is going to run into a similar problem in about 3 months time, and it will likely stay that way until more exclusives get released. But by then, I expect you to move to another metric that you'll pull out of your ass to justify your purchase and allegience. I can't wait to see what it is.

You are just like every other moron commenting on the Wii U. The only thing you can say is stuff like "The Wii U is tapped out on what it can bring to the consumer because SM3DW isn't 1080p..." That is the stupidest comment i've heard anyone say mostly because of the reason that unlike yourself, people buy systems for the games and not just graphics. How the fuck is somebody supposed to enjoy a game if the gameplay is garbage? Mario works and always will work... as does Zelda, Metroid, and all kinds of other franchises.

The Wii U doesn't just have old played-out games. Some great games have come out in the last 6 months. To be completely honest with you, I had a preorder for a launch PS4 for months but canceled it a month before the release because guess what... the games are incredibly mediocre. To deny that fact is to be completely ignorant. I am a huge Sony fan, but even I can admit that the launch games for the PS4 do not justify the system's price. The launch of the PS4 and Xbox One is exactly the reason why I bought a Wii U. The Wii U has a diverse selection of games and there are added bonuses for me. I bought a Wii at launch too, but sold it after a few months because the games were lacking. So now with the Wii U, I can enjoy all the games i've missed out on with the Wii like Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Okami, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, and many others. Not to mention that I get to enjoy some of my old favorites again from the Virtual Console. Like right now I am playing the shit out of Super Castlevania 4 which is amazing.

So if you are just being a graphics hoar then continue to be so and miss out on a lot of great experiences for no good reason. I grew up through the generation of playing games for the games and not for the graphics.

Also, my last point will be this: Why compare the Wii U to anything but the Wii? Think about it. It's like comparing a iPhone 5s to a Galaxy Note 3. Numbers to numbers the Galaxy will beat out the iPhone, but the iPhone gives users a experience they can't get anywhere else and the newer generation of iPhones are always better than the previous. Same is true of Nintendo. There is no doubt the Wii was under-powered comparatively to the 360 and PS3, but that didn't stop millions and millions of people from buying it. The Wii launched at $250 so it's really not much less cheaper than the Wii U is now. So the comparison if any of the Wii U should be in comparison to the Wii. I mean, think about it... this is the first HD Nintendo console. I mean, that is like going from PS2 to PS3 quality in games. Just go look at the new gameplay footage of Mario Kart 8 compared the others:

Mario Kart 64: http://youtu.be/hmHiQJy4oRw

Mario Kart Wii: http://youtu.be/NWUXhPgZI30

Mario Kart 8: http://youtu.be/mU7tXqYplA8

But, the PS3 was available along with the Wii... so was there ever any doubt that the PS3's games looked better? No, of course not... over time the PS3's games got a lot better and the same will be true of the Wii U. The games are already great, but there simply isn't enough. I was just like you. I though the Wii U was gimicky too, but honestly playing SM3DW has rekindled by love for Nintendo and Mario and i'm excited to expand my library.

The fact that the Ps3 was firmly in third place in total sales this generation?
http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/
Global rankings seem to be Wii then PS3 then 360
US rankings seem to be 360 then Wii then PS3
Japan rankings seem to be PS3 then Wii then 360
Europe rankings seem to be PS3 then Wii then 360

I'm not sure it's fair to call a console that's #2 globally and a leader in 2/3* regions "firmly in third". If you only meant the US you should have said so.

(* I'm ignoring the "other" region because I'm lazy)

If all you care about is 1080p, good for you that the PS4 and XB1 have you covered. Enjoy it. I suppose you're one of those people that also buys the audio receiver with the most watts, the digital camera with the most megapixels, and the PC with the most gigahertz without any regard for any other important specifications.

Similar to Zamardii, I returned my unopened PS4 two days after launch. I spent a lot of time reading reviews and forum discussions in which the response to the launch PS4 titles was extremely tepid. I was BEGGING for a reason to keep the PS4 but there was no reason to do so.

For about the same money, I can pick up the Wii U Mario/Luigi bundle, Pikmin 3, and Super Mario 3D World. I'm also excited to try Wonderful 101 and Wind Waker HD (never played the original). A lot of the other PS4 release titles I can get for my PS3 or my PC.

Bottom line....the Wii U has more going for it right now than the PS4 or the XB1. I think people are starting to see that.

No, I was actually indicating the sales totals from Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft had reached the 80 million consoles sold mark back in October, and Sony reached the same milestone in November. And considering these numbers are official from the manufacturers, I'm more inclined to believe that.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-10-18-xbox-360-reaches-80-million-consoles-sold-worldwide

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-06-playstation-3-sales-hit-80-million

Unless Sony sold significantly more PS3s in the last month than Xbox 360s have been sold, I think it's nearly mathematically impossible for Sony to have sold more consoles.

The US matters less and less. Europe has passed us and other nations will as well as a market. Winning the US is like winning the special olympics.

it might be "done" for some who aren't into the Nintendo staple games. I've been playing consoles since I can remember I was also a very heavy PC gamer (and still play D3 casually now and again)

For ME there aren't any titles out there for the Xbox One or PS4 right now that make me want to jump on one of them. I did however win an ebay auction for a Wii U this week and I'm actively pursuing a PS3 so I can play a handful of games I missed out on. The Wii U simply had games I want to play right now, Super Mario Bros U and of course Super Mario 3D world look like a lot of fun. I'm also looking forward to it for Mario Kart, hopefully a new and awesome Zelda game (not the Dynasty Warriors style one) There are also a bunch of games on the virtual console that I'm interested in.

It's not done for ME but this thread also shows that I'm not alone.

The two articles give dates of Oct 18th (360) and Nov 2nd (PS3). That's only two weeks, and covers the manufacturers' supply for the Thanksgiving shopping mania here in the US. Even the site I linked put the total sales for the two consoles within 2 million of each other.

Measuring by official statements or by some random website the sales numbers for 360 and PS3 are close. The phrase "firmly in third" doesn't describe this situation.

The US is still a bigger market for consoles than "Europe" - at least according to that site.

57.42 million 360+PS3's sold in Europe vs 73.51 360+PS3's sold in the US.
Wii also sold about 10 million more units in US than Europe.
