The 'Second Screen' Industry Is Ready To Takeoff

Nothing really new here in the way of technology since we are used to ‘picture in picture’ technology on our TVs for a while now. What is significant though, is the new way to put similar technology to work with today’s next-gen devices.

This approach is often referred to as the "second screen," the idea being that the tablet or smartphone becomes a TV companion device, allowing for added levels of interactivity— whether on social networks or dedicated second screen apps and sites that complement on-air content.
 
These creeps seem not to get it....the point of "second screening" is to entertain yourself during the 50% of TV time that is advertising/commercials when you're otherwise not being entertained. It won't increase viewership...nor will it make me any more likely to pony up and pay for cable or satellite...less so actually.
 
My tablet is my remote. No need for companies to add shit, if I want to use something, I'll find my own way.
 
The best example of a second screen app AND content on said app I've seen to date is Xbox Smart Glass used when watching Game of Thrones on HBO Go. That combo is the shizzle.
 
I'm a bit baffled as to why networks and advertisers haven't already moved to a web-page style embedded advertising scheme. DVR, TIVO, online rips, all cut out broadcast commercials. Why not extend your shows to 60 minutes and just embed an ad bar at the top/bottom/box in the corner that's not so easily cut out?
 
When I read the headline I thought they were adding real multi-monitor support to Windows and games. Oh well.

Probably because people who buy advertisements wouldn't pay anywhere near as much

I have a HTPC, I'd just crop that shit out within the first 10 seconds. Plus I don't think that TIVO, etc. would be far behind with their own software changes. Advertisements are dead, nobody watches them anymore.

Ummm...the former you might be able to do...the later would not be legal. Anyone who sold a device with that ability would be sued out of business, like everyone who invented sold commercial automated remover/skippers of the past 2 or 3 decades.
 
Not quite. No one watches boring/lame ads anymore. Some of the most viewed vids on YouTube are ads.

I think its because theres more effort put into some adverts than there is most of the rubbish they show on television.

They got bored, realized consumer interest has been met, and for no necessary reason at all (in practical sense) create an artificial reason/product to try continue increasing profits (which can only happen for so long).
 
people say they don't watch ads, but its not true, maybe you tune out toothpaste, life insurance and garbagr bag ads, but we all watch movie previews, frys ads, victoria secret ads and ferrari ads. Honestly we are just flooded with ads all day long and even if your using your tablet while the bud lite ad is on, the ad is still on and making its way into your subconscious. 2 decades from now services will be way more customer choice centered and ads will be targeted towards specific users. I cant wait to call comcast and get a quote for the 5 HD channels that I watch, consumers will prevail!!!

I noticed a local news channel started doing that. They put an ad in the corner of the screen. I saw it and did a head tilt and stared at it for 20 seconds since I had never seen that during the local news.

Doesn't TIVO spam their customers with ads even though they paid for the hardware, and pay a monthly TIVO subscription fee, and pay a monthly cable subscription fee?

Anybody still using one of their DVRs is just a sucker IMO.

Yep, if the camera senses you aren't watching the advertisements, it will put all activities on hold until you do :)

I don't watch any of those ads either. In fact I don't even get the background noise when those ads are on. I have a couple additions to my HTPC. One extension marks the time-bar to show you where ads start/stop in a recorded show, so you can literally skip past them without even looking at them. I also personally coded an extension for live TV. It's quite simple and works brilliantly. It reads the closed captioning stream and mutes the volume when certain keywords are identified, so even during live TV I don't really have to hear advertising.

Oh, I don't watch movie previews, I check rotten tomatoes and read reviews and it's pretty much a surprise as to what is coming out since I don't watch previews. There isn't a Frys in my area. My GF doesn't care if I look at porn, I don't waste my time with Victoria's secret. Ferrari ads, not even sure what to say, lol.

How, if I'm not looking at it -and- it's auto muted how am I being exposed?

Because the tv executive who made such a decision would have to go into hiding.

Well the intention was find out which ads worked on you. If big titty women get you to pay attention and drop your critical thinking, you targeted ads would suddenly be full of big titty women. Which is fine until you realize you're emptying your wallet 10% more than normal.

Nope, they don't (occasionally one small ad mixed in with TV suggestions, rarely), and nope, we're not "suckers" we want things that actually work. I have an XL4 TiVo with lifetime service and it has worked a lot better than my prior Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCI-E setup had with WMC7... before the WMC7 setup I had a TiVo HD that I sold to switch, stayed with the Ceton for roughly a year-ish and by the end was all too happy to get back to a TiVo. The WMC7 with Ceton would frequently have incorrect guide data, miss recordings at random, and had an overall less-enjoyable/simple-to-use interface (tedious), as well as numerous other small issues. The TiVo has its occasional hiccups sure, but for the most part it "just works"(tm) which is the important thing.

All the people I know are non-technical types and only a couple have even heard of torrents. Just sayin'.
 
Hmm, where did that edit button go? Wanted to add, the ones who use Tivo or the like do FF through ads, which I guess was your point.

That's what happened in Black Mirror. The walls of your cubicle home were all viewscreens, and if you shut your eyes it would flash red "suspended" until you watched again.
