Interesting yours says limited color 4:4:4? I wonder if that's the issue, or maybe you need to switch to RGB.
ycbcr is always limited in the number of shades it can use.
Only RGB can have the limit removed and is 4:4:4 which is why there is no option to change that.

I tried the 55" this weekend. It was terrible. Instant reject. You can see the grid pattern of the FALD mini leds in during uniform shots on the screen. My 50" didn't even have a hint of it, but the 55" was very bad. I had it for 2 hours and took it back. They didn't have the 50 so I tried the 55", big mistake. I recommend DON'T try the 55" for a PC. Not just that the size was disgusting. The 50 is already massively huge, the 55 was actually unpleasant to no surprise. We'll see If i decide to try another 50 sometime or not.

What happened to your 50"? I was itching to pick one up since I can get a professional discount through my contact at Samsung but with CES under 3 months away. I'm going to wait and see what their 2022 lineup will, My contact said he can't tell me anything until they start prepping the press material in late Nov/early Dec. 😪

That was the only issue? Did you notice and backlight glow, bgr text issues or anything else? I already have a qn85a but the bottom right corner has crazy backlight glow. I bought 3 different qn85as and they all have this issue, really bad backlight glow in the bottom right. Must be a design flaw.

Hoping qn90a is 90% as good without the glow, but im leery about the bgr subpixel or gamma shift with VRR since its a VA panel.

Welcome to why I returned 2-3 50's. It's present on any size.

My 50" QN94A doesn't have 100% perfect uniformity, nothing does. But I only see slight patching on grey screen tests, along with the token slightly darker corners. No evidence of FALD grid whatsoever no matter what I put on screen, and nowhere near the side tinting of the FV43U.

I recommend DON'T try the 55" for a PC
I wouldn't be able to fit one anyway. ;)

Also I still haven't seen any of those text ghosting artifacts that you suffered on your 50" on any mode. Seems unfortunate you had that experience and quickly returned it.

Had mine a couple of weeks now and so far nothing has stood out as bad or annoying. Keeping it definitely.

Samsung QN90A - 55"

Samsung QN85A - 55"

For some reason, I am getting flickering when enabling VRR on the QN90A. If I turn off gsync the problem goes away. No such issue on the IPS model. I'm on game mode and tried fiddling with every setting I could and turning off any energy saving stuff but nothing seems to fix this. I've read VA panels often flicker with VRR on, so I suppose this makes it a no-go for me gaming wise.

I'm sure it will be addressed in a firmware update.

I wonder though, is it even possible to address this with a VA panel? So many VA monitors have freesync flickering issues as well.
My 49CRG9 UW has a VA panel with zero flicker or other Freesync issues despite it not being NVidia certified.
However, I'm using it with NVidias version of Freesync, I dont know if that makes a difference.

Meh well it's just one of many issues. I can't stand the colors of the QN90A. The castle icon should be dark grey but instead looks purple. Everything looks off other than better blacks than the QN85A. Since I've been using IPS panels for years I can live with it, although most monitors I've had haven't had this obvious backlight issues.

The QN90A is didn't have any noticeable backlight bleed at any of the 4 corners or around the border either. It's edges are decently clean but there could be mild DSE not much though my 50" had very little the 55" didn't really have much either. If they made the QN90A in a "40 it would be cool right now but they are so big when you get close to 50" inches.

It had a text distortion issue. It was bizarre I needed to return it was defective or something. I'm interested to see which 2022 has lined up also.

I still haven't seen anything like that almost three weeks in.

The problem I faced was either waiting another year for the 2022 range hoping for the 43" to be properly spec'd (it would be less than a year but waiting for the prices to settle would take another year, practically speaking) or just going for the 2021 50" now. I don't think I could have put up with the FV43U's pixel crap for another year's worth of working. No regrets, I'm enjoying it plenty.

Just ordered my 3rd & final QN90A today from "Amazon Refurbished" like new certified 50" for $1073.95. Free shipping says I should have it by this Thursday in 2 days. I'll report my findings.

Why order so many of the same monitor hoping for a miracle rather than doing head 2 head comparisons with other displays? Seems like the perfect opportunity.

Bro I'm not Hardware unboxed lol I don't have any panels to compare them too. I just want to find a clean sample for myself. Also what do you mean miracle? The grid lines were very obvious on the 55" but I never noticed them on my 50". My last 50" had horrible text issues also where the 55" didn't. The different sizes had different issues that's why I'm on my 3rd try.

Good to hear. No text issues? No blaring grid highlights on uniform images or web pages or games or windows?

These are the only 2 issues I had found in the QN90As. Let's see how this 3rd one fairs. Thanks.

Nothing of note. I've tried looking for the FALD grid patterns on various uniformity tests and I can't see it. Maybe I "won" the panel lottery because even on the one reviewed on RTINGS there's a small amount of it.

I've been working on it and playing the PS5 for around a month now. Clear as anything (unlike the FV43U) and HDR gaming is a joy. I've tried several modes, refresh rates, etc. and have never seen the text issues you mentioned so for your sake hopefully it was just a defective sample.

Well boiz I think I hit the "lottery" with this 50" QN90A. I don't see any dead pixels, text looks clean, & no FALD grid outlines or shine through. Looks like I have found my "end game" display for the next I don't know how many years?, at least 5 easy. I'm actually so happy. This thing hammers games in 4k on a 3080Ti no problem Video looks awesome as well. Super satisfying purchase highly recommend.

You've really put me off buying my next Samsung TV until I see there isnt a serious lottery first.
I've been looking to get a larger TV than my Q9FN but just the results posted here have been disgraceful.

My experience with Samsung support was terrible with my current TV as it was faulty out of the gate.
First I had to get through the numbskulls they use as first and second line support, its so difficult doing that every time for every single problem.
At one point the high level tech told me I had to pay for an engineer to qualify the problems I am having!
I was so dismayed I didnt respond for a while and when I did, they got to know what I thought of their behaviour. They then improved somewhat.
It took quite some time for my Q9FN to become the TV it should have been, I guess I'm lucky there wasnt a hardware issue as well.

Theres zero chance I'm going to be a guinea pig for their next release, and thats as annoying as fk, I like being an early adopter.
I have no faith in Samsung now, they havent improved, they got worse!
What a sh*t show.
Wow I'm pissed off.

ps I'm glad you got lucky in the end.

It is on my desk. It has a small base so you can push it all the way back up against the wall. That plus leaning back in my comfy executive chair draws more distance between me & the huge display. I'll be honest, 50"is the max I can happily use. I had the 55" & It was just too big for desktop for me as close as I sit since my computer room is small.
I have it connected to a custom desktop watercooled PC with a Hydrocopper 3080Ti FTW3 Ultra. It can even run Star Wars Battle Front ll in 4k at 120hz very high settings. Looks fantastic in HDR.

A few observations I figure are worth noting after owning a 50" QN94A for roughly 2 and a half months.

I'm running with the input set to PC coupled with Game Mode as is the general recommendation for the best input latency. I'm still having to run at 60Hz, for the simple reason of having and old GPU. At first I was mildly disappointed at the response time of the panel as Game Mode set to on with 60Hz looks a bit smeary. If you can run it at 120Hz it gets a lot better, I tested it using chroma subsampling to force the matter and motion is considerably improved.

Interestingly if you set Game Mode to "Auto", the game bar changes it's "Input Lag" label to "Faster" instead of "Fastest", though for basic desktop use I'm not really noticing too much difference. There is a *HUGE* difference in apparent motion resolution when you do this though - I think it's part PWM but also part actual boost in panel response. The smearing is almost entirely eliminated in 60Hz and it look gorgeous.

There's a small downside to (at least) the 50" version, always an Innolux VA panel wherever you are I believe. It suffers from image retention. I'm a big user of dark themes and I started to notice that lighter UI elements were beginning to be retained after long periods of static imagery, visible when moving dark things across the screen. As far as I know it's actually darker shades that are retained on panels such as this, it's just my usage showing it up in this way.

I've gone back to the 90s and employed a screensaver that doesn't keep any pixel the same shade for too long. This seems to be working, clearing up any retention and preventing new bits. Never thought I'd have to mitigate "burn-in" (but not really) on a VA panel but the compromise of wandering off and letting a screensaver do its thing is worth the joy of using this screen for everything else. I very much doubt anyone using this screen purely as a TV would ever notice.

Sounds like you are having to employ OLED mitigation methods without any of the OLED benefits.

God damn it Samsung, they really know how to entice you with a good set of specs and then underdeliver.

Knew someone would say it. ;) Can't avoid OLED popping up.

No denying it's a panel imperfection but LCD image retention is usually a temp thing, it's not going to degrade my pixels over time and I'm not hiding my taskbar or changing any windowing habits.

SoCali, Hi, you are the only person who has seen that has the 50-inch and 55-inch qn90a. I really like this TV, but I really care about the brightness issue and I'm thinking of changing it to the 55-inch one. Is the difference in brightness between the two sizes noticeable? I also read that you were going to measure the level of brightness that the 50-inch emits. I would appreciate it very much, if you would. I am very interested in this. Thanks.

I have had both the 50 & the 55. I think the 50 is the best version. I currently have the 50 & I love it so much lol. One of the sweetest tricks up the QN90A's sleeve is the ease of throwing it in 21-9 or 32-9 to either go ultra wide by choice while also dropping the resolution to gain more horsepower from the GPU have higher frames while maintaining the high image quality (this is a last resort if your 3080Ti can't push native 2160p). Very impressive user experience. Simple yet over satisfying. No complaints other that a 50 is huge lol but dropping to ultra wide if you need to or want to makes the screen smaller in ultra wide configuration so It's smaller than 50 if you want that in 2560x1080 or 3840x1080 iirc..

Thanks. But is there much difference in brightness between the two?

Not really. The 55 did exhibit grid pattern highlights bleeding through the screen. Others have confirmed it also. The 50 by far has the better reputation when it comes to that particular issue. Brightness wise they are likely negligible in difference which makes it a nonissue.

Thank you. It reassures me, since in AVSforum they think the opposite, that the 50-inch model is not worth it. The 50-inch is rated hdr1500 against its bigger brothers hdr2000 giving spikes of 1600 nits. However, two reviewers measured only 750-850 nits for the 50-inch and that's why people don't want it. I'm sure it gives more.

I have measured with my phone, I know it is not the best way, my tu8000 that has 300 nits in hdr and the phone shows 280. The qn90a showed 1150. From 850 to 1600 there is a difference, but from 1200 to 1600 I think it is only a 10% more brightness, so it wouldn't be important. I just want an opinion from someone who has seen both, especially with hdr games and tell me if the difference is noticeable.
