Today is the deadline for the Senate vote on renewing the Patriot Act. If not renewed by Midnight tonight, the Patriot Act in its entirety will pass into history, likely never to be resurrected because of its controversial nature of information gathering on private citizens.

There were members who voted for the USA Freedom Act who would feel differently about reinstating those provisions once they’ve lapsed.

Sounds perfect. All they need to do is to sit on it and the horrid thing dies. Too bad it was enacted in the first place.

well if it dies a new one can be drafted and passed so it may not be a dead forever thing...

But...but...how we be protected from all the terrorists! If we don't renew it, the terrorists will win and become Supreme Lord Rulers of the Earth!

Don't worry, the scared puppy dogs will get the spy state bill passed again... Hopefully with a rider that allows citizens to call the NSA to restore their lost email

All the talking head tough guys on cable news and the warrior columnists at Wall Street Journal and Weekly Standard are at fever pitch of fear and doom at the possible end of their precious Patriot Act. Let's hope Rand Paul can weather the storm until 12:01am.

This is perhaps the one time I like Rand Paul

Some SuperPAC has been running Rand Paul monster-truck like commercials on YouTune complete with "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday" and Lindsey Graham photoshops. Kinda comical.

I'm guessing he'll filibuster the entire day if he has to.

He'll still be an idiot in the morning... So you can skip today and catch him in full form tomorrow.

I am more concerned with what will be the next bill if it will go to far, or not far enough. Time will tell.

Just curious... what makes him an idiot, and who's not an idiot, in your eye?

Not saying I like him, but at least he's trying. That doesn't go for many of the others who blindly accepted the excuse of "oh, it's thwarted numerous terrorist attacks but we can't tell you which".

I think it'll be harder to get a new bill through for a few years. They'll likely have to stick in some child protection act or government funding bill so as to not rise suspicion.

The constant need for him to do these stunts to start with. Secondly, pretty much anyone in congress right now is an idiot to some degree.

On the flip side can you point to one person it has negatively impacted in a real way?

I think they will pass a bill very shortly if this one doesn't go through, however what we get could go either way. Ground work for far worse, or the attempt to have something on the books that does absolutely nothing.

Please let it die.

But I wouldn't be surprised if we get a rash of terror warnings and 'the world's going to end cause we can't illegally spy on everyone under the guise of this Patriot Act law, so you'll all be dead when the terrorists attack/win' articles and stories to put the population back under the fear mentality so the law can be introduced again.

Also, I would not be at all surprised if much of the spying continues without any law to give it cover as it seems the government doesn't much care if it adheres to restrictions on invasive spying anymore (ie get a warrant, show actual probable cause before spying on a person/ every living person in the nation).

Finally, I would not be surprised to find the Patriot Act is resurrected via an unexpected means (such as a treaty agreement, or amending the entirety of the Patriot Act to an unrelated bill shortly before voting on said other bill to prevent the public and/or members of congress from realizing what just happened).

Define "real way". The phrase is so broad that it leaves room for interpretation beyond standards and reason.

I heard Obama on radio fear mongering with the usual nonsense about how we could get attacked and that's why we needed to pass this, made me really angry!

Let's hope it dies.

A year from now, after an attack, politicians will be saying "If only we had the PATRIOT act, we would have seen this coming...". Jet fuel can't melt steel beams. ;)

I hope it dies.

I predict they will pass some sort of modified patriot act bill. Not that should be surprising. None of those idiots on capital hill (Yes all of them) want to be blamed for something happening on their watch. I maintain there are some good parts of the patriot act that should be renewed.

Please show us some misuse of collecting the bulk metadata. Please show us where that has cause someone real damages?

Narrow enough for you?

Here is that video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7qy-4CBBZo

Kind of funny, and I hope he does filibuster. The original bull, (not a typo), had maybe 7-10% of stuff that made sense without using the constitution as toilet paper. The rest looked like Soviet Russia, and what we got was even worse, the primary redeeming quality to that thing was that it had an expiration.

That was horrible.

You don't need to show misuse in order to establish damages. Merely collecting the data without consent or warrant is enough to establish that a large number of people's rights were infringed upon.

The towers didn't collapse due to melted steel beams. They collapsed due to a number factors, including steel which was softened, losing strength, and with that lost the ability to support the weight of the floors above.

RIP and please no zombies, vampires, litches, or other undead!

Anyone have a priest of high enough level to exorcise it?

May I ask what idiot you think is so much better?

Looked like a typical building implosion to me

so much better? I could say my next door neighbor.

I don't think that is what you are after though. If your asking on a presidential hopeful, well it hasn't been narrowed down yet on that side of the aisle. If your asking about a congress person. Well the short answer is if they have spent more than a term up there they should be fired and thrown back to their home states hopefully to not be in a position like that again.
They all suck.

He just happens to suck the most right now.

My feelings exactly on the so-called Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, that Bill Clinton and a Democratic Party-dominated Congress passed in September 1994 and which President Bush and his Republican majority in Congress allowed to expire in September 2004.

I'm not particularly a fan of Senator Rand Paul (my favorite of the declared 2016 Presidential candidates so far is Ted Cruz (who I understand disagrees with Paul about the so-called Patriot Act), followed by Ben Carson), but I like him a lot more than I do the current President. If he can succeed in getting the Patriot Act to expire without renewal, then it will be a massive victory indeed, and it will give the nation a chance to start anew in addressing security issues while respecting the restraint imposed by the Constitution.

He just happens to suck the most right now.

The one person in congress that's actively doing something to kill the NSA domestic espionage program, and he "sucks the most"? What's your position on this issue?

And the motion passed. Sigh.

Hey they voted to begin "debate".

I'm supremely positively certain that the "limited government" conservatives will engage in a thorough, informed, lengthy, scholarly, and reasoned discussion about the real necessity of the Patriot Act...before passing it in 4.7 hours.

Fox News and right-wing bloggers have been trashing Rand Paul all weekend. It's sad that conservatives have completely forgot what it means to be conservative.

Most troubling is the fact that Paul has now completely lost the support of GOP leadership with his latest stance on privacy and govt. accountability - there is now zero chance of him winning his party's nomination for president. Who will the GOP throw their weight behind now? A doctor who advocates for gay conversion therapy ? An anti-porn crusader? An obese loudmouth who says he's going to send in federal agents to close down coffee shops on Denver? A rural pastor? A governor who expressly desires going back into Iraq?

Paul was the only viable candidate among the usual cadre of right-wing stereotypes that make up the GOP's presidential candidates. Without him, we are assured to see the GOP run an unappealing bible-thumping caricature who will certainly lose in a landslide against Hillary.
