What does this tell us?

I have created this thread to gather results of all nVidia 7800 series cards. This is not benchmark summary, but a compilation of potential for the cards.

There are many aspects to the value of a video card. Some want the best bang for the buck and others want the best card, period. With the information gathered, you may find that a particular brand card may have better specifications stock, but have very little overclock potential past the defined clocks.

So, for example, if all 7800 GTX's clock to 500 on the core, does it make sense to pay a $100 premium to get a 490 core? Do the cards that clock to 490 idle much cooler? Is the bargain oem MSI card as good as the more expensive BFG? Well, it will all depend on your goals for the card. Do you want to maintain a warranty, or have different cooling in mind so you can overclock the card?

Hopefully this information, once more extensive, will help you choose the best card for your purpose and budget.



How can you Help?

Share information about the performance and build quality of your 7800 series card. Please note, this is not a competition, but simply a record of a card potential (and real) performance . Please, don't fry your card trying to get some unrealistic clock to bump up a little higher on the list. If you could use the latest WHQL driver and list what CoolBits autodetects along with your max usable OC, we may be able to see a pattern by brand, etc.

I will update the first page every weekend.

Idle temp: (NOT at boot up, but after a few hours of running at 2D) you may want to also report your ambient is a significantly warmer than noraml room temp (ie, it is 85 F in your house with no AC)
Cooling method: waterblock, stock, Zalman, etc

And, add any other relevant notes you think may be helpful such as:

volt mods, LN2 cooled, etc.

Yes, true. I took your advice and updated the thread lead. What would you say is a good test of the usable OC? A few runs of 3DM05? AM3 is certainly not much of a test. You could always get through that at insane clocks while the PC is booted cold. Or, should it be the 24/7 usable game setting? Thoughts anyone?

Also, nice setup. Looks like you did not deviate from the tried and true OC parts list. DFI, G.Skill, and Vapochill. Nice.

Well.... given that all your existing data is probably one run through 3dmark05, I think that's probably the easiest criterion to use. I do like having the "auto detect" OC settings data in the chart.

Hehe, thanks, but it's never been like that until now. I've suffered through many crap motherboards, underwhealming Intel processors, and plenty of dead hardware before coming to my current setup.

I'm hoping to get another SD4000 on the vapochill and some watercooling on the vid. Then I can be done and simply enjoy the system for a while.

Nice setup you've got there too! I feel like I'm always playing catchup to the "big boys" because I try to hold onto brands (like Intel and ATI)

Well IMO 100% artifact free clocks would be the best to define as 'usable' overclock, but you'd have to have a standard method of testing for this. Like my card happily does 510 core in games (and i didnt even try any higher), yet fire up 3Dmark05 game test 3 or ATITool artifact scanner, and they both go nuts at that core clock (stable, but lots of aritfcats). Maybe define a set method of say running an artifact scanner like ATITool for 10min or something to fine the max usable OC, or highest 3dmark pass with no artifacts?

Its kinda like the whole Prime95 thing with CPUs in a way. You dont need a prime95 stable CPU to just run games (hell, my old system would fail prime in like 10 seconds, but ran games fine), but in OC lists, prime95 is always used to define stable overclocks.

I haven't tried to take the card any further. I just got the thing yesterday. :p

That 73C is a little too high for my own personal comfort, not sure even how high the card can go but the yellow bars start to show up at that temp. Idle is at 55, stock, load is at low 60's stock.

All good points. Right now I have a modded BIOS I use for 490/1350 24x7. Works well. With all stock video settings and the image quality set to "High Quality" versus the stock setting of "Quality", it gets 8503 on 3Dmark05. No artifacts and a load temp of 43C. Very usable.

I would say that an artifiact free run through 3D05 after the card has been running acouple of hours in the system would show "usable" OC values.
 
I had some issues with 77.77 in games. The new 78.01 WHQL is doing nicely, however. Not any faster or slower on 3DMark05 but better in game performance.

Is this 78.01 Official?
 
No, but they did go through the trouble to get it WHQL certified. And, nVidia is the publisher on this version. Also, the fact that it is not a 80.xx release means that it is just a fixed version of the current driver set. I have tried it in a few games, and the driver is better than the 77.77 Official release.
 
NM: Run's benchies fine, but a few rounds of bf2 and crash. Which seems odd to me. Anyone else get a straight lock, no arties, no tearing, just frozen screen in game? It seemingly happened from +5mhz on the core and +20mhz on the mem. Ah well, it's all the same anyhoo, right? Right?! :eek:

It seems that your stock cooling isn't getting the job done...either that or your ambient temps are high. It seems that the temps are holding you back since I can get about 30mhz more with the same card. Just my $.02...and some random rantings :).
 
Got plans to watercool next spring so that problem will be fixed. Im happy with stock right now anyways.

Looks like you got a good core with one bad quad. That is the highest clocking GT I have seen so far.

Anyone have any MSI results for the 7800 ?? I have not seen any results for that brand, yet.

I have posted this on another thread, but I think it is important to know:

The best points on the clock are whole multiples of the core frequency oscillation of 27 MHz. That calculates to the following root core clocks:

(17 x 27) - 40 = 419
(18 x 27) - 40 = 446
(19 x 27) - 40 = 473
(20 x 27) - 40 = 500

And, here is the proof. See how a single MHz below the whole number threshold affects 3Dmark05 scores:

It seems every card with a Zalman is performing pretty good. Can you use two of those in sli on an asus a8n-sli premium?
 
Alright, I just got my system up and running like 2 days ago, so i haven't pushed mey oc all the way, but here's my coolbits thingy. I'm installing 78.01 drivers now, we'll see if it makes a difference in mark05.

I would've thought MSI would have a better lead in the poll. Seems like a good bargain since they seem to overclock to 490 fairly easy with stock cooling.

I would wait at least a week to make sure the card is really healthy before any mods. That way, if it fails, warranty is not an issue. Most electronics fail within 72 hours of constant use if they are defective.
 
o man im really pissed now considering that i bought a 7800GTX thats a Gigabyte and theres non on the list, hopefully ill be able to put one on there

They deviated from the reference design a tad too much. As Napoleon Dynamite would say, "BIOS issues, driver issues, quality issues, supply issues, support issues".
 
Ouch!

I remember back with the 5950 series they had poor drivers and I think you were forced to use their drivers because the (detonators at the time) ran like crap with them.

Never heard much on their 6800 cards until now. Good to know because I was actually going to buy one then a friend told me to go eVGA.
 
meh, it's depressing being at the bottom of that chart! this week when i get my new cooler from Stasis, we'll see if I can bump up those megahurtz a little bit :p
