Everyone probably knows Dropbox by now but for those that don't, its a free cloud storage/sync service that works across any OS and even mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc.). It runs on Amazon's servers and its very reliable, it keeps multiple file revisions and can even be accessed thru a browser.

You start with 2GB but it's fairly trivial to jump up to 3.4GB, they have paid options to expand your storage after that but you can also get up to 20GB for free thru referrals and other easy steps, see here:

Update: There's a new bonus that will let you add another 3GB to your account (so you can get over 6GB w/o even having any referrals). To get it you just have to use the new camera/picture auto-upload feature on the desktop beta clients or the Android client (you're only gonna get 3GB max regardless of which you use). More info on the Dropbox boards (link below) or the Android app page, it's really just a matter of finding a phone or SD card w/over 2.5GB of pics and letting the client auto-upload it tho (you have to use the autoplay option when connecting/inserting the device).

Update #2: The referral bonus is now 500GB regardless of whether you've tied a .edu e-mail account to your Dropbox account or not, and it's retro-active, so everyone and their mom should be able to get up to 22GB relatively easily!

Anyway, the old referral thread hasn't been edited in over a year, figured it was time to try a new one... To avoid the stagnation that one suffered I'm gonna do things a little different tho, suggestions are welcome. To start with, I'm gonna repost the names and collect referral links found thru the last page of the previous thread, about two month's worth.

Now, where I'm gonna do it a little different is in updating the thread... Every month I'll update the list with new names and cycle it, if you haven't posted again or PM's me to let us know how many referrals you need to reach the max bonus space then I'll drop you to the end of the list. If you have done so then you'll stay in place.

Anyone think I should update more/less often? I guess I'll only cycle/drop the top four for now until I see how fast it churns. I've set myself a reminder to update it next month, etc.

Btw, the reason for keeping the list current is that Dropbox will actually allow you to keep gaining referrals past 32 even tho you don't get any extra bonus space from it, and there's no indication of how many referrals someone has accrued when you use their link.

Also, if I happen to miss an update or get run over by a bus then you can just go to the end of the thread for a referral link, tho that's obviously less efficient. Here's a link to the previous thread where you can find the referral links for the first 25-ish people on this list at the moment, if necessary.

UPDATE: I'm not abandoning the thread but I thought I'd post this here for the take-matters-into-your-own-hands sort... ;) You can use Google Adwords to rack up all your referrals in a matter of days, for free if you manage to score some credit thru an ISP/host or for about $35-70 depending on luck and patience. I followed a similar procedure as Lifehacker and got about 47 referrals in 3 days, tho 18 haven't installed the app on a PC so I only have credit on 29 at the moment.

I ran three ads and used a CTP of $1 and a whole bunch of keyboards but the lonesome "dropbox" keyword got by far the most clicks. Protip: DON'T capitalize the word FREE as they did in these links, dunno how they got away with it but its currently against Adwords rules and your ad will just sit in review limbo if you do so. I had to call to find out why mine weren't eligible at first.

according to the 16Gb max referral max since i only have 3.25Gb now,I need 32 more to max out since I get 500Mb per referral now

I'll gladly help others out if I can get some free space in return. I only have extra space from doing things like taking the tutorial, linking my Facebook and Twitter accounts to Dropbox, etc. :(

Ive only got 5 so far. I dont know how many total i can get. I top out at 8GB.

Edit: As a suggestion i would drop everyone except those who have posted in this thread. I also think it should be 1 link in the OP until they have all of the referrals they need.

I'm just wondering, why do you guys have an allegience to Dropbox, why not Box instead. You can get 5GB by signing up and 50GB by using the Android app with certain phones. You can even spoof the manufacturer to make it think you have the right one. I use Box and I like it.

EDIT: NVM I forgot that DB syncs automatically, that's enough of a benefit in its own right.

I'm only 512mb out of 8gb for referral bonuses. :eek: I use my Dropbox account to host maps and mods on my Killing Floor server so if I could get more space I could upload more content for my server :D
 
the crappy thing about that 50gb from box.net is you are limited to 100mb per upload
at least for portable devices, no idea about desktop.

Awesome, I guess I was wrong when you sign up for .edu and your upgrade credit is extended to 500 mb /referral... then you still keep your max of 32, so now because of this thread I only have have 24 more to go. Thanks so much.

Ouch. Poor guys. Going to be hard to get the referrals up if most of us already have it.
I've had mine for over 3 years and have about 10gb free.
Db is good, but sugar sync is better.
 
I don't have any referral bonuses at all, my dropbox is only 2.88GB. I'd really appreciate being added to the list. As you can see I've been on the [H] for over 7 years, so this isn't a throwaway. Thank you!
