DF has a new article up about TLG on 4k screens on PS4 Pro. Says that if you have a 4k screen but set the output to 1080p the game boots up into an enhanced 1080p mode that has better framerate than base PS4 at 1080p. If your 4k TV does not upscale well, it says you can boot up in the enhanced 1080p mode, then after the game launches go back to the options bar and set the screen back to 2160p so the console handles the upscaling but still maintains the 1080p mode. Also says a few other games do this as well.

They point out that it would be better if you could leave the system in 2160p mode but in-game choose between the enhanced 1080p mode or 4k mode.

So far reviews of this game have been that it's alright but not amazing. Jim Sterling cited a ton of mechanical and physics issues which just sound incredibly frustrating.

I'm waiting, I'm definitely going to get it, but I'm too busy with the latest No Man's Sky update I haven't played much else.

So anyone buy this game even? lol.

I bought the Collector's Edition, and it'll be delivered Saturday. Been waiting a LONG time for this game. The statue that comes with it looks great as does the art book. I'll definitely report back with what I think.

I picked it yesterday at Best Buy. I got a new PS4 Pro. The graphics on the Last Guardian are pretty decent at 4k on the Pro. The very first part of the game was a little frustrating though. I didn't know what to do, no spoilers, but I sat there for like 15 min, then the Japanese subtitles reminded me a hint what I should do. Finally figured it out and finished the first few checkpoints. Just not sure if I"m gonna get sick of hearing the Japanese talking after 20 hrs in.

Its very slow gameplay, (nothing like DmC which is crazy fast exciting game I've been playing recently). But you start to form a bond with the creature which is kinda cool and different.

I get my Collector's Edition tomorrow. Are you happy with it? The statue looks great! Thanks for posting pictures. How about the artbook? I was hoping to find some great artwork in there I can make some high quality prints from so I can hang it from my wall.

The art book is OK. It was a secondary bonus for me, I got the collectors edition for the steelbook game case and the statue. I'm not sure how well it would work for high quality prints though. A lot of the pictures cross multiple pages.

Debating picking this up as part of Best Buy's current "Buy 2 games get one free (at $59.99 or lower)". Decisions...priorities...

At this point my backlog is at Zimbabwe currency inflation levels...

The game performs abysmally on standard PS4 hardware. Low fps (around 20 in most areas) and sluggish camera controls make it a pain in the ass to actually play even though it should be a relaxing game. I'd only go as far as renting it unless you have a PS4 Pro and have played Ico and Shadow of the Colossus before.

I finished the game this past weekend and it was alright. I didn't love it like ICO when I played that game the first time or SotC which I thought wasn't as good as ICO. Still on a standard PS4 it has some serious issues in several areas where the system just slowed down a lot. I would normally have bought this game but I am glad I rented it because the performance drops on my PS4 were just terrible. I don't mind so much 30 fps on my 1080 TV but when it dips below that several times, it's pretty jarring. I'd probably buy it used for $10 or so just to have the game in my collection (since it is part of the ICO,SotC games) but I wouldn't buy it with a Standard PS4 at full price just because of the performance issues.

Gameplay wise the biggest gripe I had was the controls. The first big issue was the invert Y. They let you invert Y for camera controls, but to aim there is no way to change so it is normal so that really drove me nuts at times. Also the beast controls weren't fun at times. They made it similar to real animals which at first is cool, but as you go it just becomes annoying. There were no puzzles that were difficult, but some didn't seem possible to do for several minutes because of the AI just not wanting to do it due to trying to act like a real animal.

In one instance I was trapped in a room with water and it took like 30 minutes to get out of. The way to get out was to get Trico to drop his tail through a hole, but he wouldn't do it. Well I kept moving the box to get it to work but I finally noticed it was working but the stupid tail was getting stuck on a rafter beam so it wasn't reaching. It took a few reload from checkpoints to get the tail to drop properly without hitting the stupid rafter thing and getting stuck. I mean you'd think they'd take that into consideration to try and drop the tail again if you call out to the beast, but no it just sits there and whines at you.

I haven't played ICO or SotC but this game has been hyped up for nearly a decade, I feel compelled to play it. However, I think I will wait until I get a PSPro.

some of the videos I've seen of people struggling with this game are hysterical...apparently the big dog doesn't respond to commands a lot so it makes playing the game an exercise in frustration

From what I've heard he responds more and more often as the game goes on and the bond between him and the boy grows. Exactly how frustrating it is early in the game is hard to say without watching a full LP because other videos are heavily edited compilations of him not responding.

If you've got a PS3, there's a bundle of both games you can grab for cheap. It'll give you something to do while the price of LG goes down :)

Beat the game. Absolutely incredible. The wait was worth it. The AI for Trico was wonderful, and the relationship that you two form is palpable. I really really cared what happened to him/her. The puzzles were genius I think. Just when I think I can't figure out where the hell to go, I stumble across the solution and I think "That is brilliant!." They mixed aspects of Colossus and Ico in this and I really enjoyed it. Playing on the PS4 Pro btw and the game looked incredible and performed just fine with no issues really. The atmosphere, story, narration, music was just incredible and I will have to play it again. I am going to fire up Shadow of the Colossus Remastered on PS3 and replay that now to see which I like more if that's even possible to say. If you liked Colossus and/or Ico you should definitely get this. It's worth it.

So you didn't have any issues with the controls or the monster? I have read many complaints about how it can be a pain in the ass getting it to do what you want. JS has a good take on it here:

Here is the way that I look at it... the AI can be seen as one of two things; either Trico doesn't do what you ask him to do or he is a animal that you have to learn how to handle. Bear with me for a second; There were times when Trico would do things I didn't ask him to do, or he would do the wrong thing but I look at it in the context that this is a animal that you have to in essence teach how to behave. Literally every time I would get frustrated would have nothing to do with Trico, but it would be right before I stumbled upon how to move forward. Perfect case was when I was stuck on a tree (I am sure some of you can relate). It took me at least 15 minutes to figure out what to do to get loose but once I did it was a real AAAAH moment.

Basically, it all depends on perspective. If you simple play this as a game then you might end up being disappointed, but if you play it with the mindset of having to control a creature like this that you essentially just met and trying to get him to do what you want; it's not alwasy straight forward. At no times even when I was like "No, no that's not what I wanted you to do" was I upset or frustrated in any way because while you can direct Trico you don't control him. Any frustration like that I had was immediately rectified and proceeded onward. I always thought of it as that Trico has a mind and personality of his own which sometimes actually can be quite amusing like he will start to play with something or moan in the direction of something, or start walking around trying to find a way forward without finding anything until I direct him for instance to jump up onto a wall so I can get up higher to reach something.

I may sound like a apologist, but honestly that's the mindset I had with the game and playing it in that context completely won me over and I absolutely loved it. Idk if you've ever had this happen, but there have been times where I would watch a movie for the first time and hate it. Then I would watch it a second time and absolutely love it. If you can play this game in the right mindset then I am sure it'll be satisfying to you. There was a occasional camera angle issue, but nothing that ever made me angry or upset.

Bumping this thread since I just played through this. I'd heard of the game a few times before and meant to play it after I beat the Shadow of the Colossus remake, but for whatever reason didn't and forgot about it until I got the PS5 and saw that this was part of the PS+ collection.

But I definitely agree with Zamardii above; the game was awesome even with Trico not listening perfectly sometimes. I got stuck on a few of the puzzles for a while too, but if you remember to use Trico's tail to climb on for some of them, that will save you a lot of time. But the game kept my wife's attention as she watched me play through it the whole way, which is pretty rare. I'm sure it helps that Trico is pretty cute too look at and listen to though, hah.

So any of you PS5 owners with PS+, this is definitely worth downloading and playing through, as it only takes 8 hours or so to play through.
