The bad news? The internet is ruining your brain. The good news? Who needs a brain as long as we have the internet? :D

Put down that breakfast burrito and listen up. The internet is ruining your brain. Turns out those hours spent perusing hilarious memes, Lolcats and hungover owls, is not the best way to increase your brain's productivity. More worryingly Google is actually replacing our brains.

I can kind of relate to this. I am much less patient now when I do homework for a difficult class, I am much more likely to check google than think about it for a while longer. Need to get rid of that habit.

Let me google the proper response for this thread... one sec.

I've gained knowledge from the Internet, but it keeps people in the house way too long.
I would say the Internet is ruining people's social lives.

I might be in the minority, but I read a LOT on the internet. I don't see how reading comprehension takes a down turn when it's on a LCD screen.

if you're reading poorly written blogs and dumbed down news pieces, sure.

Wolframalpha helps my brain learn. Best site that isn't porn lol

Depends on how it's used. A book could ruin my brain if I whacked it against my head hard enough or read silly books all day. As it is, the internet has improved my life and well-being. There's so much useful information available, from all around the world, that would have been far more difficult to come across without it.

I think this article did it's part in ruining my brain, wtf is with the diagram?

I think the internet ruins your brain just as much as watching America's Funniest Videos or any other brain dead show on TV. At least if you use it in the way they describe it as. If you use it for educational or to further your knowledge then it has the opposite effect.

The internet makes you more manly!

The link says the internet causes reduction in white brain matter. A low level of white brain matter is one of the things that makes a guy's brain a guy's brain. (Don't worry, though, men have like 7 times more gray matter than silly women.)

Most of my internet time is spent reading articles and posts in various forums/news sites.

And then there's tvtropes.org...

I think the only way to get this thread back on track is to inject a highly charged political dumb ass comment or bring religion into it like a finely written South Park sketch.

The linked [Strike=Option]article[/s] giant animated .GIF that should have been a webpage instead of an image but wasn't because the author's brain has rotted seems to say that the real problem is hearing and seeing things at the same time. Our brains just can't handle it.

So at any given time you should either close your eyes or stick your fingers in your ears. Problem solved.

I think this article falls into the "dumb study of the day" category. I mean, one day a study will tell you coffee/red wine/whatever is good for you and the next there'll be a new one saying it's bad.

But as far as legit studies I have seen, things that actually engage the brain (like reading, playing a musical instrument or even video games) are better for your brain than just watching mindless tv.

Agree. However, tweeting your current stomach contents and updating your location on Facebook probably doesn't fall into those categories.

Oh, hell, no! I don't engage in any of this social networking stuff. I don't even have data or texting on my phone. Call me a Luddite if you will. :)

I think I'll shut down now and go play a musical instrument and engage my brain a bit. :p

Isn't someone kicking that very same dead horse every other week?

I think the part that makes one dumber is looking up wrong information on the internet and convincing yourself that you found the right one. Otherwise, the internet gives you access more frequently than having to find resources on information you need.

back before the internet they said the same thing about tv

before tv.. i dunno, but i'm sure somebody said something about something

I've been sitting in front of the computer for the past 7 years. I don't think the average internet user's social life is ruined, but when you spend as much time using the computer as I have, it can really change you. Most of the time was spent gaming, and I hate those social networking sites. But man, I am really fucked up in so many ways because of it. I went from being somewhat outgoing to being extremely timid; I have forgotten how to talk to people outside of the computer. It's my fault, though. I don't blame anything or anyone other than myself.
