The highly rated HP Pavilion Slimline PC thread

Just a question, but If i have an AM2 board that normally takes te 65w cpus, if my ps is upgraded, what would prevent me from using a 95 or 125w cpu as long as it was socket 940?

If you are talking about Hp Slimline boards - no.

The 65W TDP limit is a mobo limitation (power circuitry on the motherboard cannot support anything over 65W), not a PSU limitation.

It's also a cooling limitation, but that is another beast.

thanks, thats what i was wondering... if it was a mobo thing or not, cooling i wouldnt care about because i can work around that, but if the mobo cant do it, its dead in the water so to speak lol....

I may be selling a 3400f with the sparkle 9800gt and 300w ps and all the goodies and shit soon, not sure yet... just isnt doing what i want it to anymore...

What's it not doing?

I've still quite satisfied with mine!

Well I bought the pc when I was 18 or so kuz it was cheap, and looked like it had decent spec's at the time, but Im doing alot more gaming now... basically, I raid heavy content in world of warcraft, and I also like crysis and farcry, but dont have them installed on here... And some ppl say the 9800 is fine for wow, which ya it is.... so long as your not in an end game raiding guild and play with 25ppl at once with spells going off and all sorts of other stuff happening.... I will say the 9800 got me to about 10fps on low settings in wow, compared to the 2fps my 8500 was giving me lol.... but if i didnt raid, i get like 30-60 just flying around and doing solo quests... i may keep the card and just build someting with a better mobo/processor and faster ram... I did also consider upgrading to win7 64bit to see if that would make alot of difference, but i already dumped like 200 into this pc in upgrades that i would have rathered put towards a mobo/cpu combo. I also considered the phenom x4 quad 9350e, but its EOL and hard to find... theres a 9450e as well... I just dont want to put anymore upgrades into this to try to make it a gaming pc, when its the mobo thats slowing me down... I might as well just try to swap the mobo with one from the s3750f so i can use a 95w cpu and get more upgrades out of it... but if im swapping the mobo/cpu, and already upgraded the gpu, and ps, why not just get a new computer? idk, im torn... this is not a gaming pc, and thats what i actually want... im open to suggestions though..

I almost wish this was an intel rig, i hear their lower end cpus game better than amd now...

It does not show the realtek device.

I didn't have to get the realtek HD Audio driver, the last time (about... last week:p) I finished a fresh ATi install.

HDMI audio still worked fine for me.

The difference is, the custom Realtek control panel (which is rather decent).

HDMI audio works fine, the problem is I'm not using HDMI I'm using VGA, so I need the regular audio to work.

Pulled the vid-card, sound worked fine. Onboard Audio was set to "auto" in bios, just had to pop it over to "enabled" everything works great now, should have thought of that sooner.

The 9150e could be had on newegg for 60usd, a week or so back.

However, you are right, the upgrade options are limited, due to a [silly] restrictive BIOS.

I'm sorry...

I was totally off the mark, there.

yup... my last idea is to find a APX78-BN (Nutmeg) board, from a s3750f, and just make it fit... since thats am2+ and not am2, it can support AMD Phenom Quad-Core (Agena core) 9xxx series (AM2+) 95W Max which would allow me to use a AMD Phenom X4 9750, idk... I like the idea of swapping stuff and changing out all my hardware, but... i still think building a gaming pc for myself would be a better option..

You could get a Zotac 9300 ITX, an Intel LGA775 CPU, and any PSU that would fit (iirc, you have the Inwin).

The cooler that HP ships with ALL (even AM2, HP requested ASUS make LGA775 mounting holes on the AMD mobos) is actually a vertical LGA775 cooler!!

thats an idea, but newegg deactivated that...

it is tempting, specially with a ZOTAC GF9300-I-E + Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 (3.0ghz) but im at 485usd in upgrades there, I could get an ASUS M4N82 + AMD Phenom II X4 965 for less than that, and thats top of the line right there.... Remember, HTPC is not my primary objective :(

we know.

The i7 route is tempting, isn't it?:p (though would need the sacrifice of your Optical Drive for a GPU PSU).

i should take a picture of my pc rite now.... the case is open, and nothing is even screwed it.... i just blast it with canned air daily.... I think im just gonna build a gaming pc... its not worth swapping the mobo, and cpu, when i already upgraded the ps, and gpu because that would basically be a new pc in the same case... and a case is cheap...luckily i can reuse alot of the parts in here while I get new ones...

now the important question.... AMD or Intel? I have always been an amd fan, hence why i posted the 965be, and asus board i did... but the i7s are just beyond solid... however so are the prices lol, and the 965 can more than hold its own with crysis and beyond i would say...

Whichever you like more, really.

I don't game anymore, so I cannot really say which is faster - only, the 98900GT is NOT going to be testing the limits of any decent CPU.

I have an unmodded s3600t that will not boot. When I press the power button it is as if the power cord was unplugged because I get no response, not even a blue light.

I live in an old house, built in the 1900s, and I rent, so I don't know what the power in the house is like beyond that my power strip tells me it is grounded. I have tried other outlets in my apartment but I had no luck.

This is the second time I have had this problem with this computer. The first time, about 3-4 months ago, I thought the PSU was dead so I bought a Sparkle, however by the time the Sparkle arrived the old PSU worked again. I replaced it with the Sparkle just to be on the safe side, but apparently the PSU was never the problem.

Do I have a bad motherboard? Has anyone encountered something similar to this? Thanks.

Likely a bad motherboard, but:

-try resetting the CMOS.

Jumper, battery, whatever it takes.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...ry&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3832297

is you motherboard.

-making sure all the jumpers are actually on the pins

I'm sorry for the lack of ideas. There just is not much I can think of, at the moment.

need more than a prayer, dremel, and flexible PCIe risers to make that fit in a Slimline cae - even the new s5000:eek:

but heh!

That is a nice gts250 sli hydro setup - if they wern't the 65nm cards:mad:

ive decided not to stay with the slimline... just gonna build from scratch... and yea there are better cards already, the 295gtx is a beauty, but 2 250gts's sli watercooled will oc nicely i believe... should be able to handle whatever i throw at it... probably gonna go with the asus and amd 965be. then wrap it in an old dell case i have for the time being, then gut the hdd/ram/cdburner from my slimline for the time being.. until i have more money... ill run raid0 vraptors more than likely.

Morning all,

finally managed to find the Pegatron APX78-BN [Nutmeg] board for sale and just wanted to let anyone curious know that with the 5.12 bios comes Phenom 2 support. I've got an X3 720 chugging along nicely in mine =)

Hello Guys,

not that I'm planning to do this (yet), but would it be possible to replace the original MoBo for this ZOTAC MoBo? http://pden.zotac.com/index.php?pag...age_images.tpl&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1 I haven't seen any prices yet, but it would the oportunity to "upgrade" the slimline to the latest and greatest (assuming you would like to go to the new Core i3/5/7 CPU of course)
Would it work with the facotry PSU or would I need to upgrade it to a 300W?

Update: I just saw on a German site that the current price is approx. 110 Euros and release date is beginning of February.

Yes, you can use any mITX mobo.
Yes, you will need to upgrade the psu.

so you've tried the sparkle and the same thing happens? Try turning on your power supplies after unhooking everything from the motherboard by jumping any of the black ground wires and the sole green wire in the 24 pin ATX motherboard connector. See if the power supplies themselves spin up to verify they are not the issue.

Hello all! I have a s3100n that has a bad motherboard. HP wants $200.00 to fix it. Is there a cheaper straight up replacement for it?
It has a gj474aa aba in it now.

Is that an AMD board?

ASUS kinda fubar'd many of the coolers of older AMD HP Slimlines, and HP offered to fix them for free, until dec2009.

do a search through the last few pages on this forum, theres alot of mobo talk, you can replace it with several boards, pending on what else you want to change, but just remember if you change it with a NON HP board, you will need to change your power supply as well. the upside to this is it will allow you many new upgrades, if thats a path you wish to follow. also, try checking ebay, ive seen hp boards up there b4.

The mobo out of a s3100n is listed as M2NC51-AR via hp.com, and after reading a quick review on that model, its not worth 200 to replace a mobo on that, i would just get a new pc personally, but there are all types of reasons to upgrade things :)

That one is the infamous, overheating HematiteXL. It was replaced by a newer (refreshed) chipset in the Acacia. However, HP will just replace that poor motherboard with another HematiteXL. So don't pay 200usd for that.

Thanks for the into, twizt3dkitty!

Thanks for the info! I think I will just get a new PC. No reason to pour more money into it. I cant believe I only got two years out of it, I hardly used it!

another hint, if you want future upgrade possibilities, dont get a form factor pc, i regret getting mine, if you want an htpc, slimlines kick ass, otherwise... well, i wish i had an elite..

I sold off one slimline to help funds for another PC, lol:cool:

If you may change your mind and want to replace your moBo anyhow then you should check out this eBay reseller: http://shop.ebay.com/digital_anny/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340
For some reason your original MoBo is quite expensive, but you can replace it with another AMD-MoBo (as JeremyShaw already suggested), e.g. the Acacia MoBo for 87 dollars. Your original board is 150 Dollars. If it is possible you could also go to an Intel MoBo, e.g. the Irvine for 77 Dollars. But then you need to buy also a new Processor ...... Depending where you reside shippingcosts are from 0 (US) to 28 (NL) Dollars as an example.

Do we really have good options to change the stock Slimline 5000 series MB, considering the special location of the PCI Express slot?
