The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - Post your 10TB+ systems

Its all on page one...

Old thread was outdated and with 100,000+ views, it's time for a new one.
This is The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread

I will maintain an updated rankings post based on the most total storage and most storage in one chassis.

Drive expanders and all external storage can count towards your total amount, but not towards the chassis ranking. Think of that as the most hard drives in one case.
See croakz's system as an example. His Lightning "system" has 28.4TB of space. However, 12TB of that is in a drive expander, outside of the main system chassis. So that counts towards his total amount, but the most he has in one chassis is 16.4 TB. Also, this is a great example of a neatly formatted post.

If you want your name on the board, the following are required.
  • Pictures of your actual systems.
  • Minimum of 10 TB (advertised) total storage.
  • Full system specs
  • Post format must follow the example post.

Once you are ready to be considered for a spot on the board, make a post and send me a PM with the link.
If it doesn't meet the requirements, I'll tell you what to fix, or I may just delete your PM - this shouldn't be complicated. If you can build a machine that qualifies, you should be able to follow simple instructions. I'm not going to be a nazi about it, I just want a clean, organized thread.

Your post should include the following information. Try to keep it in the same order.

Amount of total storage (if posting multiple systems)
Amount of storage in the following system

Case
PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
GPU (if discrete)
Controller Cards (if any)
Optical Drives
Hard Drives (include full model number)
Battery Backup Units (if any)
Operating System

A short paragraph here describing what you use your storage for and how you handle backups and organizing would be nice.

Then post a few pictures somewhere that has decent hosting. If your pictures go down, you get dropped from the board.

houkouonchi has offered to provide free hosting for pictures
http://hardforum.houkouonchi.net/
hotlinking is for hardforum only
thanks houkouonchi!

Make sure you have the storage amounts in bold text and at the front of your post

FAQ

just the sum of the manufacturer stated capacity for all your drives
ignore RAID, formatting, etc

Multiple. So say you had 2 systems with 6TB each, that would qualify.

Home unless you own the business, but if not, feel free to post, it just won't count towards the rankings.

yeah just update your post and then send me a PM, don't make a new post

For right now, it's just one entry per person for this list.

I didn't feel like trimming it.

yay, i feel special, i finally get to join this club :D

FIrst off, my old server 8.5TB advertised:

Still in the process of getting the new server running, can't get hot swap working, says i need some marvell driver, but i can't seem to find it anywhere i search

@moose517

Can you please take screen shot of disk management? I would like to see if you get SMART readings from yours SAT2-MV8 cards.

Holy crap, You have just shy of 10tb useable, and yet you only have 4tb left of space...

...Or am I reading that wrong?

**edit
I also ask, because Im looking into setting up a Windows home server machine in the future...

2.3TB in data, 2.3TB in duplication, and some left over used by backups and what not. Seems about right.

Man i never could get mine to do that.
Id sure like to know what i was doing wrong or not doing though.

yea me either, was trying updating bios's, mb chipset driver, etc .. nothing seams to work .. i suspect that it has either to do something with mb brand/model or they have some other drivers for the card

sure, here is the disk management pic
Capture-26.png

and for space, yes there is only 4TB left already, same day as i finished moving all the data over haha, and only 2 smaller PC's were backed up at that point via manual backup, will grow really fast once its gets to my PC, almost 2TB on my desktop as well.

100TB?!?! DAMN!!! I demand pics of the chassis.

I'm almost at the 10 mark, once I go over, I'll submit my server. Its at 9TB right now.

I spoke too soon. treadstone beat me and BlueFox to the Chenbro RM-91250 that we had been stalking, by literally 2 minutes. there was a site with a pretty good openbox deal on it a few weeks back.

he tells me he's already bought 50 x 2Tb drives for it. so once he finishes his build and decides to roll in here, it'll be /thread at least for storage in a single system.

Wow, thats a kick ass case, Its perfect if you want the maximum possible amount of HDD storage in one case, but damn, the cheapest I saw was over $3000.

They got it for a bit over half that actually. odditory and I were watching it for weeks to see how low the price would drop.

Very [H], indeed!

Congrats!

Now, I sure wish I was the chiropractor in charge of putting the poor soul that has to move that case fully loaded with PSUs, HDDs, cables and whatnot. That has to be a back-breaking experience... lol

And DAMN for the 100TB mark... That's just INSANE!

Cheers.

Miguel

i was happy i finally had the money to add 2tb to my server at the house. Come in here and see someone talking about building a 100tb system, cant wait to see that build thread.

+1 to that. I'd be buying a 2TB drive this weekend, but I need UPS batteries first.

nice, u have temp readouts.. would u mind sharing the drivers u used for sat2-mv8? also, what MB u have?

for mother board, i have supermicro X7SBA

for the drivers for the sat2, i grabbed the newest ones from supermicro's FTP server

EDIT: its the 3.1.0.2 driver

Antec Mini 180
Compact awesomeness!

Sweet, just as I like them: small and packing a punch.

I also wanted something small, but the only good uATX cases in my price range were VERY unavailable (the mini 180 is great, but it was like two to three times more than I could afford), so I had to go with an ATX case an uATX mobo...

Also, glad to see you can actually use the IGP AND the PEG slot at the same time on that motherboard. Always a big plus!

Cheers, and good luck with the build.

Miguel

Min OT .. In fact I see that many users use the 4 in 3 device module from Coolermaster.
Where and at what price they buy what I saw on eBay there are a little way!

Stupid question, but why would you want to run virtual machines off the server?

Stupid question, but why would you want to run virtual machines off the server?

Simple, I leave the server on 24x7 (I turn my gaming rig off at night and restart it to frequently to run VMs for my liking) and when I am playing a game I know that 100% of the resources are available to the game. The server also draws less power and I can remote connect to it from my gaming rig so it works just as well for me.

My first post here!

The 2 IDE drivers are only temporary for some backups.

atm there is about 18 TB but missing some drives and 1 controller card.

Will post my workstations later.

Stupid question, but why would you want to run virtual machines off the server?

Because a server running as a file or print server in a SOHO environment will see very little load on the CPU and it will burn more watts heating the room than doing actual work (unless its a software raid... but even then it would need to be a big damn array to tax that CPU heavily)

so running some VMs on top of it makes it a worthwhile investment. He can do more jobs with less hardware.

Someone needs to get a few Norco cases and jump on the SAS expander bandwagon. :p

How do you have the MyMovies server setup? Is it straight in R2 or is it in a Hyper-V VM?

Can you post the hardware configuration?
Thanks.

nice system, I'm curious about the two pci controllers, which controller are they?

My UPS actualy only shows 1 bar of usage, so i dont think i its all that bad. And alle the drives are turned off after 30 min.

It started in a HyperV VM but now i have in directly on the R2.
