This is The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread

Anyone can post here regardless of system specs, and I will maintain an Top 20 rankings post based on the most total storage and most storage in one chassis.

I'll also try to have some "featured" systems that stand out for what ever reason so if you don't have enough space to crack the top 20, you still have reason to post. Things like
  • Unique setups
  • Clean systems
  • Detailed, nicely formatted posts with good photos

Top 20 Rankings
Drive expanders and all external storage can count towards your total amount, but not towards the chassis ranking. Think of that as the most hard drives in one case.
See croakz's system as an example. His Lightning "system" has 28.4TB of space. However, 12TB of that is in a drive expander, outside of the main system chassis. So that counts towards his total amount, but the most he has in one chassis is 16.4 TB. Also, this is a great example of a neatly formatted post.

If you want your name on the board, the following are required.
  • Pictures of your actual systems (not a screenshot of disk management)
  • Full system specs
  • Post format must follow the example post
  • Obviously you must have more storage than #20 on the list

Once you are ready to be considered for a spot on the board, make a post and send me a PM with the link.
Make sure you have the storage amounts in bold text and at the front of your post

Your post should include the following information. Try to keep it in the same order.
Amount of total storage (if posting multiple systems)
Amount of storage in the following system

Case
PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
GPU (if discrete)
Controller Cards (if any)
Optical Drives
Hard Drives (include full model number)
Battery Backup Units (if any)
Operating System
(A short paragraph here describing what you use your storage for and how you handle backups and organizing would be nice.)

Then post a few pictures somewhere that has decent hosting. If your pictures go down, you get dropped from the board.

FAQ
Is the "advertised" space before or after raid? Suppose I have 10 1TB drives in raid6 for 8TB of "advertised" space after raid, does this count? I think the intended meaning in the thread is "sum advertised space of drives in your system" (e.g., 10 * 1TB => 10TB), but it could mean "compensate for advertising overhead on the amount of usable space you have" (e.g., 7.6TB because drives are smaller than 1TB each => 8TB).
The sum of the manufacturer stated capacity for all your drives. Ignore RAID, formatting, etc.

I use this machine to backup my main computer and the HTPC.
I put the Seagate drives in the bottom where they will get more airflow and I put the Western Digital drives at the top, 5 in the Supermicro cage and one below it in the 5.25 bay.
I put a quieter fan in the Supermicro cage and then I used an old Fanmate controller for it and the exhaust fan.

This is my HTPC/file server. It will be connected to the TV and surround sound for watching stuff I download. It will also share file serving duty with the WHS.
It was a very similar build as you can see by the spec list. I am using RAID5 on this machine though and went with a faster processor and stronger GPU to handle media playback. One thing I did to help drive temperatures in the Supermicro cage is put the Western Digital drive in the third position (middle) since it runs significantly cooler than the Seagate drives, I thought this simple change might keep all the drives a degree or two cooler. Also you can see I went with a huge cooler for the northbridge as I'd seen some reports the Nvidia 9400 can get a little toasty and I usually like to go for overkill on heatsinks.

I use this server to host several game-servers, seed torrents, and run the free image hosting I setup for hardforums. It has 400 megabits of internet connectivity via 4 NICs. I also use this as a backup of my important files that are on my home system.

In the future the 4x2.5 inch drives bays will become SSDs (probably in 1-2 months) to help bring down the I/O load on the server from seeding torrents.

This is the box which i used for all my TV. It has 2 genpix DVB-S tuners for HD sat, 1 nexus DVB-S for non HD sat and 2 pchdtv cards for OTA HD. It can record 5 things at once and get non-recompressed sat streams from dish network.

If it doesn't meet the requirements, I'll tell you what to fix, or I may just delete your PM - this shouldn't be complicated. If you can build a machine that qualifies, you should be able to follow simple instructions. I'm not going to be a nazi about it, I just want a clean, organized thread.

To be ranked you must obviously have over 10tb, is it in one system or in multiple?

For example, my "Terabyte" fileserver currently has 8xWD10EACS and a 320GB system drive. It obviously is almost 2TB short of 10TB and therefore does not qualify for ranking as a single server. That said, my "Terabyte 2" fileserver will have in excess of 16TB once my HDDs arrive(9xWD20EADS on order). It would qualify for the single server rank. Does Terabyte contribute to my total storage rank(It is below 10TB)?

Either way, it doesn't impact me personally, as terabyte is getting a 2TB drive and it will be larger than 10TB. However, I thought others could benefit from this clarification.

Yeah I knew people would mention the water heater. I wouldn't be happy regardless as its a brand new water heater ;)

Also, I'm not too concerned really, I do plan on building out the basement which will give the rack a proper and permanent place.

question.... what do you guys do if one of those drives were to die?? I am sure you are using some kind of raid but if you have say 10TB of total space to use, wtf do you do when one drive goes kaput?

With RAID 3/4/5/6, you only lose 1 drive to parity info (2 for RAID 6). You get some protection from drive failure, but at the expense of having to do parity calculations. It is also either very slow or very expensive with a hardware RAID card (the Areca 1280ML that a few people have posted, me included, retails for $1200). I would imagine that most of us have spare drives laying around in case something fails. I have a 1TB drive sitting on my desk that I didn't count. I guess I'll also update my post with how much I'm using.

Editing the post and mentioning at the bottom of your original post which components changed and when. I think we can keep the thread very clean and short if only new entries are added.

I can't decide if I'm gonna call my server setup Storpocalypse or Driveageddon :). Thunder has been my domain controller and fileserver for a while, Lightning was just recently built up to be a toybox. I'm gonna use the drives in the SAS Expander off of Lighting as my main backup. I have a bunch of Raptors I was gonna put in there vs the 500s, but figured the SAS stripe was plenty fast to play around with for now. Might scrap w2k3 off of Lightning and play with virtualization, it'd be cool if I could get WHS on a VM with it controlling the SAS Expander.

Fun facts: From the APC monitoring software, Thunder takes ~315w idle, the SAS Expander takes ~200w idle, and Lightning takes ~405w idle. Yikes. Time to move some UPSes around.

The expander shouldn't matter. All an expander is a method of connecting more drives without massive amounts of cables. My server uses an internal expander, four SAS lanes bundled together connecting 24 drives. As I fill my server, I will add a second SC846E1 chassis and daisy chain it to the first for 48 drive goodness. It is still a single system, just split between two cases.

I agree with Ockie, but I admit I wasn't clear initially. Expanders can count towards your total storage amount, but not towards the largest system amount. What I meant by "system" was really "chassis" or "case" so I have renamed that ranking.
 
No problem here, just figured since it cant be run on it's own it'd be counted as whatever machine it's apart of.

Hey ock-meister. While i've never dabbled in such high end storage, i don't think expanders count as systems, i dont believe they run an independent OS, have a CPU, or NIC for that matter. Right? Not trying to be argumentative, youre my storage god, but just curious about the tech.

SAS supports multiple HBAs however, so you could have 2 computers attached to an expander.
