So with nvidia announcing their 3000 series lineup with MSRP listings and statements that even the 3070 will be faster than the 2080 ti; the flood of used cards has begun! This makes me so glad I didn't buy a video card recently. Seriously though. Before I would be casually searching through ebay for fun to maybe find 6-10 listings for a 2080ti with crazy prices on most days. Usually for around $1000 or more. Now that official statements have a $500 card coming out in weeks that is beating that same card in performance, ebay is literally flooded with cards for sale. The FST board here is too. Prices are still looking high in comparison as it seems most people are trying to get close to $700 for a 2080ti. Maybe they get lucky? I couldn't see myself spending anywhere near $500 for one considering the 3070 performance. What does anyone else think is going to happen with the video card market this month? I think it is going to be fun to watch as I like to track these kinds of things. So I am busting out the lawn chair and popcorn.

honestly, as long as msrp holds, a nd i can wait for the inevitable scalping to die down, i would not buy a 2080ti for more than 350, even if only the 3070 matches it or is a few points less. The lesser cards for much much less.

Has it been confirmed that 3070 performance matches 2080ti rasterization performance and not just raytracing? If its just RT performance that is the same I can see 2080ti's value remaining similar or above $500

Confirmed? I've just seen marketing and some prelim numbers - prelim showed +/- few % in RAS. However, i would like to see more hard numbers...but the leaked numbers seemed to be accurate. What is almost more intresting to me is the 3060, "rumor" has it engineering cards are beating 1080ti handily. So at a retail of 350-400 - this would bring competition level gaming to everybody.

Also, the 3080 spanks the 2080ti hard, very hard for 700. So if you are going to spend 500+ might as well go for a 3080, you also get a warranty, which is easily worth $100.

These people selling now are kind of short sighted. We don't know what the supply will be on the new cards, most likely not good considering past launches.

So last gen cards should still be worth a bit once the 3000-series is sold out and we see the scalpers take over.

Based on the Digital Foundry video, we're seeing about 70-80% performance increase from 2080 -> 3080.

Now, lets do some core math. For this comparison, we're going to just say the 3080 is 70% faster than the 2080. So if the 2080 = 1, the 3080 = 1.7

3070 = 5888 cores
3080 = 8704 cores

3070/3080 = perf differential

5888/8704 = 0.68

So, if the 3080 = 1, the 3070 = 0.68

So now we invert the 3080 and 2080.

2080/3080 = perf differential
1/1.7 = .59

So here's where we are at so far.

3080 = 1
3070 = 0.68
2080 = 0.59

Now we go back to some "reviews" and see what the difference is between the 2080 and 2080 Ti. Hardware Unboxed is usually pretty good at this.

Video is timestamped to the correct time: 23:21

@ 4k, the 2080 Ti is 30% faster than the 1080 Ti, and earlier in the video, it is established that the 1080 Ti and 2080 are roughly the same in performance.

2080 = 1
2080 Ti = 1.3

So now, lets adjust all figures to make the 2080 = 1

3080 = 1.7
2080 = 1

2080/3070 = perf differential

0.59/0.68 = 1/x
1x0.68 = 0.68
0.68/0.59 = 1.15

So here's where we stand

2080 = 1
3070 = 1.15
2080 Ti = 1.3

My conclusion is that, based on initial numbers, the 2080 Ti will remain faster overall. BUT this does not account for driver updates since that video was posted by Hardware Unboxed, so my best guess is that the 3070 and 2080 Ti will be neck-and-neck on performance.

BTW, I suck at math, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. :)

I probably should have sold my 2080ti weeks ago, but I guess nobody could have foreseen the price to performance the new 3000 series was going to offer. I’m still floored at the level of performance the 3070 is going to offer.

Right now I’m on the fence with selling my 2080ti. I’m kinda pissed it’s value just completely tanked, and there are people warning others on all the Craigslist, & various hardware for sale boards not to pay more then $400-500 for a 2080ti.

So either I keep my 2080ti out of spite and put it into another system at some point, or I get what I can get for it now and take a $1000 hit since I just bought it in spring. Yes... I was aware we were expecting new cards this fall, but again I didn’t expect Nvidia to offer such high performance for a price cut, and 2 when I bought the 2080ti nobody knew when or if they would for sure launch in the fall plus I needed a replacement card asap.

Either way I’m grabbing a 3080, but either I get some cash from my 2080ti, or keep it out of spite lol. I’m leaning towards the latter even though I don’t benefit. I am literally going to lose $1k since the card is 4 months old. 🤬

The question you have to ask yourself is do you need a 3080? I certainly don’t need anything faster right now than my 2080 ti so I’m waiting to see how all the cards stack up from both AMD and NVIDIA. At the end of the day I may opt not to upgrade at all and wait on the refresh.

I was trying to ride my 1080Ti until today, but it died back in May and I bought a 2080Ti

Then I went full water - which has been great, but I have about $1600 in this 2080Ti and I guess it's not even worth half that now.

Still, I pretty much just play Apex Legends and at 3840x1600, my 2100Mhz 2080Ti does great and I'm very happy with it.

So maybe I'll wait for the 3090Ti super or something...

Not sure what I'd do with my current card - put the air cooler back on and give it to one of the kids? Sell it cheap and bite the bullet? (probably, at some point)

This is how it goes - if Nvidia comes in low, everyone bitches - if they knock it out of the park, everyone cries.

Personally, I'd rather cry for a day and then move on, the 3090 looks amazing....

the entire announcement was geared more toward RTX and DLSS performance. there was very little in the way of rasterization comparisons.. i'm not drinking the kool-aid til the reviews.

2080 ti used prices on Ebay have dropped precipitously ~£250 overnight here in the UK. Amazingly half of them are Condition: Opened, Never Used. Uh-huh... :rolleyes:

So glad I timed my card sales to elapse the 30 day return mark last week.

Yeah, I feel bad for people that bought the 2080 Ti recently. I don't mind so much since I had it for 2 years.

I guess lots of people are getting good deals on the used market, so some lose, some win.

Yeah, I've just thrown mine on ebay for £600, but who in their right mind is going to buy it?

Looking to get a 3090, but will probably need a new PSU too to add to the cost. My 750w EVGA isn't go to power it along with the 10900x.

This is what my research indicates 3070 roughly equal to 2080ti, plus or minusca few percent...for $500

like me lol... I mean it is what it is, nobody expected nvidia to price so low. When I bought my 2080ti back in late spring (for 1300 usd) I fully expected to take a loss when selling it, but I figured I could get $7-800 for it, and I probably could have had I posted it over the weekend. On one hand it feels like an insult getting offers in the $400-500 range, a few offering 600, but I get it. Why would anyone buy my card for over 5-600 when the 3070 is touting 2080ti level performance.

And... I feel like the re-sale value of the 2080ti will only drop a little more once all the reviewers post the FPS numbers, since at least right now places like DF can show performance, nviida has blocked them from showing the actual FPS.

The crypto bubble really inflated prices, both retail for turing and secondary for many other cards. Many people sat on the sidelines and I totally understand why.

Yeah, I know Crypto was partially the blame for the high pricing. First gen RTX tax, Crypto mining, supply issues.

It almost doesn't even make sense to keep the 2080ti out of spite, I might as well sell it anyways and use the cash to get the 3070 for a 2nd PC. Then maybe I won't feel so bad heh... that's if I can get a 3070 at MSRP

My 2080 Ti is just going to be put back in the box for a backup card. Was going to give to my daughter, but she wants a 3070.

Also, the 3080 spanks the 2080ti hard, very hard for 700. So if you are going to spend 500+ might as well go for a 3080, you also get a warranty, which is easily worth $100.

Well technically we have no proof of the spanking until actual reviews. On paper they spank for sure.

Posting here this here also, but I'll answer your question its worth less if you try and sell it now than if you wait. Buyers have forced the market to an artificial disadvantage for sellers. No one knows how hard the 30 series card are going to be to get or if the benchmarks hold up in all situations not just vulcan or d12 async games. If I were trying to by your card I wouldn't offer more than 275 with the outside pressure from the 2080ti's in the market. If you haven't sold before the presentation you really should hold off now. There are too many people trying to dump their cards. You missed your window don't take an unnecessary hit let the cards launch, see where the used prices settle because they really can only go up from here and then you can decide if the value is worth it to you.

Provided that the reviews back up Jensen's claims I fully expect the going rate for a 2080 TI to settle in well below the $499 MSRP of the 3070.

If you think the secondary market is blooming now, wait until the 3070 and 3080 are readily available at retail, and AMD has made their announcement in October sometime. I suspect that would be the "best" time to scoop up a used GPU, if you are into that sort of thing.

I am going to follow the benchmarks of this new lineup very closely. I am curious to see how the RTX 3070 and 2080 TI compare in pure performance, with RTX turned off.

I'm an established seller here so I can probably get $275, especially since it's a SUPER card, evga, over 2 years of warranty, and mint condition. Thanks for the input.

I sold one of my 20 series cards for a pretty good price over the weekend, but it had very little to do with the 30 series. I just wasn't using it. I'm glad I sold it when I did, though, holy cow.

I'm holding on to my 2080 Ti for now, though. We'll see what performance of these new cards is really like once they get into the hands of reviewers and enthusiasts, but something tells me that there are a whole bunch of asterisks next to all those claims about how they're 70 or 80 percent faster than the 20 series. Those asterisks having a lot to do with DLSS and ray tracing, both of which are super cool, but wholly unused in the majority of games.

I have a 2080ti that I got lucky with buying for $750 roughly after tax from ebay over a year ago. So i feel i got value out of my purchase for both a great deal at the time and use for a year. I'm more than likely going to do the old hand me down routine though. Wife going from 1080ti to the 2080ti, kid going to get the 1080ti from the 1070, and I am not sure what I am going to do with the 1070 at the moment. Luckily I bought it for $170 so it is more than likely going to drop to near the $100 range soon considering.

I hate to sell quickly without a backup but that's OK.
If an established trader here wants this card let me know.

i understand your predicament, but i would not touch your card for anywhere near what you want - even if the 3080 only comes out 20% faster than 2080ti, although the paper says 40%+, for 700 it still represents a significant cost/performance gain, normalized, the cost of video cards per unit of performance has gone significantly down, even for the 3090 since for the moment it is in Titan territory.

Since gaming cards are a luxury nice to have, i have recommended my group not to even think about used.

1. 3080 higher end, 3070 budget
2. used cards have been handled and used by you. you may be very carefull but ESD damage can be subtle and present itself as "walking wounded" with no way to prove you didn't do anything to the card because it can appear to work fine.
3. sure, sure you never overclcked...everybody lies and there is no way to prove that you didn't plus the damage is again subtle and may express itself as parametric degradation.

And with fair msrp prices, who needs your used - if you can afford 400 for a used 2080ti you can afford 500 for a 3070, if you can afford 275 for yours you can afford 350 for the Zotec 3060. if 75$ means something to you, you should not be buying a graphics card for gaming which is a pure luxury. But that 75$ buys you better performance, a guaranteed undamaged card by you, a new warranty, a new clean box with accessories, etc.

Used video cards at this point in history need to be priced such that if they don't work orcwork right they can tossed in the trash withoit a second thought.

While it looks like you put a bit of thought in this post all I can say is just, no. The person looking at the used market already is trying to make the most out of their budget. You saying they should just pay more and buy new is just silly at best. In this situation its an EVGA card with warranty so why would some that wants to build now but stretch every penny not get a card underwarranty(EVGA warranties follow the card). The release date for those at this point rumored 30 series cards below the 3070 don't even have a date yet. You really want someone to wait an unspecifed time for something that just might perform as good but may also perform the same and be more. If it was overclocked is irrelevant, there are people that don't want to spend more than $275 can you say for certain those card new @ $275 will beat a 2080 Super?

Yeah I don't think we will see the 3070 for another month+ and we can't be sure newegg/amazon/etc. won't mark them up a bit on the initial low supply. I got lucky on mine price-wise so I didn't care either way what happened on the 30xx series. I'm going to keep it as a back up or sell it to a friend at a reduced price.

Man, are you being paid by nvidia to post this? The more you buy, the more you save! Am I right, guyz?!

First, until benchmarks are available, it's pretty irresponsible to go around telling everyone you know that anything besides a 30 series card is obsolete and that they need to just throw out their 2080 Ti immediately. I can imagine all sorts of asterisks attached to those performance claims nvidia made yesterday.

Second, it's yet to be seen what real pricing will be. Yes, the prices look great for now, but what we don't know is what the retailers will do with the inevitably limited supply. I bet if you want one of these cards before the end of the year, you're going to end up paying a price that looks a lot more like the 20 series' original pricing. Remember what happened in the summer of 2016, with the 10 series?

Third, most people aren't as abusive to graphics cards as you seem to think. New is obviously better than used, but especially if the used prices really do get pushed as low as you seem to think, the 2080 Ti will be the deal of the century for those users who can handle the risk of a <gasp> used graphics card. And I say that as someone who has a collection of graphics cards that I bought in "dead, for parts" condition, which now work. I'm even using one to type this post.

He registered YESTERDAY so I wouldn't pay him any attention

Okay, lol, peace. I just providing my opinion and my recos, spend your money as you will.

And yes i did register yesterday, long time reader, but this particular hardware launch is super exciting to me. For the first time in a long time it represents a significant advancement in price and performance, something we haven't seen in years. And yes you are right, this launch could be a mess with the distribution channels and most numbers are just on paper that could quickly be refuted.

However, what people don't seem to get is that even if the performance were equal, the price is effectively halfed.

There is risk in buying used that is 100% not there with new. Despite your examples. This idea you can use your hardware for years andarecoup most of your cost is a crypto phenomenon and not reflective of historical norms

And even if the performance is only equal, the old cards would stil be economically obsolete as the new cards are effectively half the price if all works out.

edit: took out the snark it is pointless and not the message

Has it been confirmed that 3070 performance matches 2080ti rasterization performance and not just raytracing? If its just RT performance that is the same I can see 2080ti's value remaining similar or above $500

No confirmation on anything other than some percentage based gains that Digital Foundry got to show with a 3080 vs a 2080. Performance in Nvidia chosen games was up 70-90% depending on title

These people selling now are kind of short sighted. We don't know what the supply will be on the new cards, most likely not good considering past launches.

So last gen cards should still be worth a bit once the 3000-series is sold out and we see the scalpers take over.

Demand is going to be extremely high because of the huge performance jump but with it being on Samsung 8nm supply might level level out pretty quickly. Yields will be good and they don’t have to beg TSMC for foundry space who has had a rocky relationship with Nvidia.

I think demand will be huge even if it turns out performance gains are mediocre. The HALF price point will capture the buisness - 2080ti performance (but it will be probably much better) for 500-700$....

Bought a 2080 on launch, damaged it in the spring and bought a 2080 Super out of necessity. Toyed with the idea of getting a 2080 Ti at the time, glad I didn't do that.

Pretty happy with the performance I'm getting from the 2080S, although the 3080 is really tempting.

Cyberpunk might be the deciding factor for me. If the 2080S can run it at high settings around 1440p, I might stick with that. Otherwise, it's 3080 time.

I'm also very curious to see what performance boost a 3090 buys you. Given the high bar set by the 3080, the 3090 must be pretty impressive to justify the extra $800.
