The Great RTX 3080 Scalping event has begun!

I'm browsing the completed "Buy it now" 3090's on Ebay and people are shelling out $2500-$3000 for a promise of getting a card when the scalper hasn't even received it yet.

Who are these desperate people? The money is one thing but sending cash to someone who doesn't even have the card in hand? Madness.

That wasn't what I was referring to at all. In context, we were talking about false bids into the tens of thousands of dollars with no intent of paying, NOT selling things for more than you paid for them.
Ah I didn't get that from the quote. Yeah that's definitely not allowed. Still, the best way to avoid it is just do buy it now and make them pay right away (this applies to all eBay stuff).

It's against eBay's TOS to sell things over your cost (in this case a GPU)?
Huh? How? Ebay is largely just as much a "market place" like Amazon, with the option to have bidding (and deceptive AF shipping charges to make a cheap item much more expensive), and all of those market place items are definitely selling over cost. So again... huh? how?

He wasn't saying that. He thought I was saying that earlier, but I wasn't. Cleared it up in the post right above.

lol.

I wonder if Nvidia purposely fudged the drivers so that the 3080 couldn't come closer to the 3090 performance so they could sell it.
What you are saying makes no sense. The 3090 is only 11% faster on average for 1440P and 4K than a 3080. Both cards have little room for overclocking due to the Samsung 8nm process and the transistor density on 3080 and 3090.

"The 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue...
The demand issue is that it is much much greater than we expected — and we expected really a lot.

...Even if we knew about all the demand, I don't think it's possible to have ramped that fast. We're ramping really, really hard. Yields are great, the product's shipping fantastically, it's just getting sold out instantly...

...I just don't think there's a real problem to solve. It's a phenomenon to observe. It's just a phenomenon."

videocardz noticed some information from a Danish retailer. To date, he only has been able to fulfill 10% of the orders.

The shop is Proshop and they presented detailed charts on RTX 30 series availability, the number of orders, and how many were already delivered by manufacturers.

https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/g...-stock-allocations-are-unprecedented-low.html

In total, Proshop reported on 44 different models. Next, we have a chart of the grand totals.

Who cares. If you don't want to pay a scalped price don't buy it. If enough people feel the same way then the scalpers lose money. Personally I'm only willing to pay less than the price from a store from some random on ebay. Warranty and servuce issues matter and its way less reliable from a third party. I actually find it amusing watching people screw themselves over by overpaying.
Exactly. Crazy (and funny) how much extra people will pay just to have something slightly earlier

People are gonna be pissed once Nvidia releases the 20GB version of the 3080 in December.
Probably not. They can just sell on Ebay and likely get at least what they paid out of it. Remember, the 20Gb card will cost more (~$135 estimate on gddr6x), so not everyone will want it. There will be plenty of people ready to buy up those 10Gb cards for anyone who wants to upgrade.

Slightly off topic...

It appears that crypto currencies are on the rise again

https://videocardz.com/newz/xfx-chi...all-available-radeon-rx-stock-to-mining-farms

According to MyDrivers, the Chinese XFX branch has sold ‘almost all’ stock of Radeon RX 500 and RX 5000 graphics card to mining farms.

MyDrivers (machine translation):

According to the information received, throughout September, XFX did not give agents several graphics cards in China. Almost all mainstream models on the market such as RX 580 8GB, RX 590 8GB, RX 5600 XT, RX 5700 XT, etc are out of stock.
As for the reason, it is said that after XFX received these chips from AMD, they directly sold them to the miners , completely becoming “mining cards”, causing the agents to not get the goods at all.
The popularity of GPU mining is slowly increasing as Ethrerum value has doubled since April. In October the value dropped to 372 USD (today) but it has been oscillating between 430 to 350 USD in the past month or so.

No, they won't. 10GB will continue to be the most sought after 3080.

Yeah, I don't think the vast majority of people care about 20 GB VRAM.
3080 10GB will probably be the more sought after card if the difference between it and the 20GB is $200.

But I think the 3080 20GB will hold its value better in the long run.

Bear in mind that non-Founders cards are expected to cost, at a minimum, an extra $50.

So if you add $200 for extra RAM, that's $250 over Founders pricing.

I'm not saying they won't sell; if anything, people will want a 20 gig card over Big Navi's "paltry" 16.

I purchased a pre-built from Microcenter. https://www.microcenter.com/product/629573/powerspec-g467-gaming-computer
I'm staring at the box at the moment. The last computer I purchased was a Packard Bell 66mhz computer. I partpick'd the specs the best I could and it looks like I spent 300 bucks or so for the build itself. I've been itching to upgrade from my 7700k/32gb/radeon7 for sometime now. I hate that I didn't build it myself but I haven't gifted myself in a long while.

Ah, a return to the days of the mining craze, when you had to buy a whole pre-built system to get a video card.

it just worked out that I wanted the upgrade (all around) but would have perferred to do it myself. But yeah, it does remind me of an earlier time.

Im looking for another PC for my son, and if the price and parts are right i might consider these prebuilts from microcenter!

At least the prices scalpers are asking for is going down on ebay the are having a hard time selling for last months prices.

strange report. Apparently China's largest retailer sold ~750 cards only in the few 1000s but faked several times more reviews
