The Future of Gaming Tech with Digital Foundry

TL;DW (audience actually has good, informed questions at the end):
  • A bunch of bloviating about resolution, "true" 4K vs. upscaled 4K, for 20 minutes.
  • Consoles are moving toward the "PC" model of upgrading, away from the "mobile" model of buying a new product every 4 years.
  • 60 FPS titles sell more than 30 FPS titles, generally. More developers are now considering lower detail, higher framerate as a serious option a la Nioh.
  • Emulation is important to video game preservation.
  • Frame pacing is an issue in console games to this day. Developers still tend toward fixed frame counters instead of delta time in update loops. Bungie developer admits he was confused about stuttering issue in Halo 3...
  • Physical copies of games are not going anywhere until digital delivery ditches the packaging and shipping costs built into the standard $60 price tag.
  • Video game streaming services a dead end until broadband infrastructure catches up.
  • More bloviating about resolution (8K!).
  • And... scene.
