The Future According To Microsoft

The problem with this video: Apple is preparing patent applications for the devices shown.

That might be a bit tricky as almost everything in that video is based on existing Microsoft products, Kinect, Windows Phone & the Metro UI, digital ink, etc.

They all look like rich upper class people. What about the future of the middle-lower class people?

I guess I just hate seeing visions of how tomorrow will look like today. I've seen that crap since the 40's and I'm only 30.

The one thing that irks me about these "visions of the future" motifs is how they cater only to those who can afford the technology. It's as if they expect everyone to have high paying jobs to afford all of this fancy technology. This is a great look for business executives and the like, but not everyone are some robot in a suit working for Fortune 500 companies.

Heck, 3D video technology is still expensive including 3D displays. 3D movies in theatres are an example of that when tickets are over $10 a pop.

The same issue with needed medicines, life saving technology, and medical treatment for people that need it both here in the US and those in third world countries. Not everyone will be able to afford that medical technology that could help save their lives.

It's also the same thing where companies push an all electric future when the vehicles themselves are still too expensive and impractical for normal people that commute day-to-day.

All in all, these "visions of the future" videos are fun to look at knowing what possible technology will be coming five, ten years from now. I still think, though, those post-apocalyptic movies are more closer to reality than these kind of videos coming from companies like Microsoft. Even moreso, a lot of people still seem to be against an all touch-based interface future depicted so much in science fiction films. You can just look at criticisms regarding Windows 8's GUI and interface.

If companies want to show a vision of the future, they should start showing normal, middle (or even lower) income people using these future technology. Until that happens, I'd more believe Gattaca, Deus Ex, Blade Runner, Minority Report or even Robocop (first one) closer to reality as our future. (2012 not included.)

As heatless already covered, Microsoft have already patented these concepts. They don't release these crap of their vision for the future without ensuring that the competition is going to go ahead and steal the idea (Apple). The last vision video Microsoft released was the same case (2019 video).

This video is what it is: Concept technology no different from the concept cars you see in movies / tv shows / animes.

I mean to say "is not going to go ahead and steal the idea (Apple)."

Eh... I guess some of those stuff count... I was expecting Holographic footballs and stuff, or gaming!

What they don't show is the more realistic scenario of malfunctioning units due to bugs and hackers stealing your CC# and ID.

^ This is definitely what I thought would be the future, especially back in the 90's.

For such a futuristic video, they sure used a lot of mid century modern furniture (Verner Panton S chair, Knoll, etc).

The UI they show half the time looks way too busy to me, and the users seemed to navigate or zoom in/out thru it very haphazardly... Maybe I just haven't used WP7 devices enough to grasp it, but from the little I've used them and seen of them they tend to work well due to a minimalistic approach (that doesn't necessarily translate well to larger screens).

I guess UI wasn't necessarily the main point of the clip tho, but interoperability and sharing... Which on a large scale continues to be a pipe dream because competing companies just can't agree on anything, hell they cant stop suing each other long enough to even sit down and have the kinds of discussions required for this sort of mass interoperability.

That's the same reason there's never gonna be A big brother... Several big-brother esque entities fighting each other for your data/soul maybe, but that assumes a general level of security required for that data to actually be worth something ( after all, if it isn't safeguarded it's worthless); and we're quite a ways from that. It isn't even merely a technical problem either, but a sociological one...

A good portion of consumers don't WANT to think about cyber security at all, not even in it's most basic sense. The same kind of logic that tells you to lock your door or car doesn't exist for a lot of people when using a computer, thus any amount of security protocols implemented at the technical level fail as soon as the technology is in the hands of someone without a care in the (cyber) world.

they forgot that everything will be saturated with advertisements. Looking out the cab's car? Come on.... perfect place for a beverage ad.

I find apples Future computing videos from 1990 to 1992ish to be much more hilarious at how much they ripped off gadgets from SCi -fi TV and put in bad acting to explain the future.

OH yes I remember Sitting through lots of these fucking future of computing/ video game demos and videos as kid and still wating from my fucking hoverboard from back to the future and powered shoelaces and my own personal KITT talking computer.

now where is the fuck is my Table computer that don't cost $10,000 microsoft so I can pretend I have one like the dude on tron, that will by the coffee table in front of my TV.

Meh, just because the so-called futurists are constantly getting it wrong doesn't mean we aren't seeing incredible advancements in our lifetimes... Our kids won't grasp the concept of physically having to travel to purchase media, heck they won't understand how we ever survived with instant/remote access to all our movies/music/docs, that's as mind blowing as any hoverboard if you ask me.

Based on what I just saw, if thats the future, I better start investing in power companies.. Cause with all that shit I can imagine the power bill is beyond sky high.. like half way to Jupiter..

All that video says to me is - "WELCOME TO YOUR NERVOUS BREAKDOWN DUE TO INFORMATION OVERLOAD!"

Jeez, all that information all seemingly locked together like a massive data jigsaw. I don't want that. I don't want to have to live my life with a device seemingly embedded in my hand.

Road sweeping will be a highly prized job if that's what it's going to be like for the average exec!

Data Slave!

Urg. The future looks too hard.

Screens everywhere. Too much touching to get to shit that's hidden under other shit. It's bad enough as it is now with people hiding stuff and requiring you to "navigate" to find it. I'm sure as fuck not a treasure hunter, nor a gps.

^data jigsaw. Yep, welcome to metro ui.

Q.) Is any of this actually necessary?

A.) No, of course not.

Q.) Is this therefore a huge waste of intellectual talent that could be put to use in benefiting mankind, for example, in how to prevent wars or make people kinder?

A.) Er, yes.

Q.) Is somebody is going to get rich out of it, anyway?

A.) Sssh don't tell the masses.

Another "This will be your future" video...

Two thing come to my mind:

1-) All this touching interfaces: disgusting! I'm freaking out cleaning my iPhone 1000s times a day.

2-) Where the hell is my flying car???????

So umm there's problems in the video.
1. Why would anyone fly out to attend a virtual meeting
2. Last I checked of Johannesburg isn't all that nice (weather-wise.)
3. Since the lady supposedly flew in to South Africa... WHERE ALL THE AFRICANS?!?!?!?!?!

But granted, there are certainly more blacks than they showed in the video. They are still the majority I believe.

There is no 3d holograpic interactive 3d furry porn on any of this crap either so this is all fake and will never happen.

once furry get a hold of this crap they will make furry porn AI characters that live on there walls and let you "touch them"

they have failed once again to know how the real world will use this crap.

I also forgot to mention, apparently Microsoft thinks that Homeschooling is the future!

Lenina Huxley: Just don't ask them where the meat comes from.
John Spartan: Huxley, what's that supposed to mean?
Lenina Huxley: Do you see any cows around here, detective?
John Spartan: Que es este carne?
Hamburger Stand Guy: Este carne es de rata.
John Spartan: Rat? This is a rat burger? Not bad! Matter of fact this is the best burger I've had in years!
Hamburger Stand Scrap: Gracias, Senor.
John Spartan: Prego. See ya later.

What happened to laser eye surgery? Would we not just have sunglasses that adjusted the shade to the level of light?

So no on the "yes we can" for the future. Really not the best part to cast a black man for. And where are all the flags of China at? I am sure in the future Asia will keep all the really cool stuff for themselves. As they wave to us from orbit.

(picturing China planting a flag on the moon and bumping the stars and stripes to the ground)

3. Since the lady supposedly flew in to South Africa... WHERE ALL THE AFRICANS?!?!?!?!?!

1. Because it is The Future (tm).
2. Johannesburg has freaking awesome weather.
3. They outnumber whites 10-1 in South Africa. However a large majority of them are still very poor. And it seems this is a video of the 1% in The Future (tm)

One thing that puzzles me. If everything is digital and super awesome, are we still going to have camping trips with mosquitoes and sunburn and tents that won't work properly? Those are awesome. Also, How is everyone so fit if they spend all day alternating between touching a screen and cleaning a screen.
Also, I am going to invest heavily in a company which makes screen cleaning equipment.

I knew who posted this before reading the username. :p Not saying it's a bad thing, but you've fallen into a label CP3.
