The Five Biggest Problems With Fallout 4

Do you agree with any of these? My only problem with the game is that it constantly sets off my OCD because the world is so big that I keep thinking I’m missing things.

It’s always a bit strange to see such huge disparities between the positive and negative reviews and reactions. Interestingly, however, many of the positive and negative reviews seem to agree on many points. The game has some very big problems. Where they ultimately differ is that for some gamers and critics, these problems don’t detract much from the overall experience. For others, issues ranging from technical to intentional game design choices have left a sour taste in many gamers’ mouths.

I agree on the graphics for sure. Gamebryo is old and busted and that the bugs make me feel that Team Red deserve better. I wouldn't take the plunge knowing how Beth is like with all the Gamebryo titles since Oblivion.

Maybe this is a generational thing or configuration thing ... I don't find the graphics to be substandard or to pull me out of the game (but maybe it is just my 51 year old eyes vs the ones of a 20 year old) ... for bugs I haven't played that long yet but haven't encountered any significant bugs ... I can't judge the conversations as I haven't played long enough ... for the combat FO will never be a TB game again so that crowd should just move on (since everyone likes to compare FO to Witcher 3, does it have turn based combat) ... and the more of the same quote is always a catch 22 (Diablo 3 changed up stuff from D2 and everybody screamed bloody murder ... FO4 is mostly the same and people scream bloody murder ... for the sequel franchises you are rarely going to see a Sea Change as the point of the sequel is often to leverage the previous games successful element and not change them willy nilly)

Ultimately I think that just as War Never Changes, so too does the gamer's ability to complain about their games ... you can never please 100% of the gamers and so far I, for one, am pretty pleased with FO4

I think we can all agree that the bugs are a problem. The conversations may be a bit one sided or aren't fully obvious to your goal, but that's like most Bethesda games, so only someone completely new to FO may be confused by this. And it can be overlooked. I disagree on the point the author made that Skyrim had worse voice acting. I thought it was pretty good. Maybe not enough variety, but that's hard with big open world games - plenty of repetition in DA: Inquisition, Witcher 3, etc.

I should have stopped reading when this guy said that the Witcher 3 graphics were subpar to Witcher 2. We'll agree to disagree on that point. I do agree that FO4's graphics do not meet modern, current-gen expectations (nevermind next-gen!). The effects are not even bad, its primarily the environment, the heavy use of prefabs, the reuse of items and structures from 5 years ago without improvement. The lighting, shadows, wetness, some models,..they look pretty great.

What's unforgivable are not having higher-res and more detailed textures in most places - along with the FPS being tied to physics like every other Gamebryo based game. This seriously bugs me for a number of reasons, primarily because of my eyesight and low refresh rates and low fps giving me headaches. My rig can run this at over 120 fps, and other games in the last 5 years simply don't have this type of issue.

Lastly,...the combat. Its an improvement and movement is less clunky than previous FO titles. Its pretty darned good. And you never have to use VATS unless you want to. There is no need or requirement. As such, I don't see this as a negative to the game.

And seriously....this article was on Forbes?? I would expect better.

Bunch of whining with no perspective, that for no apparent reason appears in a business mag.

Graphics for a baseline game are quite good as these games go. Even on my 2560x1600 panel at High in my sig rig. Could be better? Sure. But the game strikes a good balance between performance and graphics.

Conversations people will always pick a bone with

"More of the same WAAAAH!". Got news for you Forbes. People screamed hell when EA murdered what made Dragon Age Origins great with DA2...The FO formula works pretty well. Why change it to be "innovative" when all you do is piss off your fan base. Derp.

WTF is wrong with the graphics?

Come ON people, it's FALL OUT, the graphics should be a bit 'cartoonish' in keeping with the 'flavor' of the game.

Yeah, there are a few bugs, but these days that's pretty normal for any new game.

And hell, FO4 is a hell of a lot less CTD, crash, and bug prone than its predecessors. I haven't had one CTD yet. Random physics bugs happen in any game...but geeze.

My biggest complaint was of a game-breaking Xaudio crash day of release. It was promptly fixed with the first patch and I've since been able to play for hours on end. To that end, I was extremely pleased to see it fixed so promptly.

As far as other complaints? I've not encountered any other game-breaking bugs, just the usual AI being odd all the time kind of things. The voice acting is definitely improved, albeit the new dialog system does leave me missing the old style where I could choose what I was going to say and know what I would end up saying. And graphics? It's no where near the best. But, then, that's not what the series has ever been about. When it comes to an expansive world, it does that well and the new lighting and shadows are a huge step forward compared to the previous games. That alone, the lighting, adds greatly to immersion even if textures and models are lacking.

But, then, I tend to be easily pleased by such things. Physics bugs rarely break the game and are more a source for surprised amusement than anything. Antiquated graphics, when applied with good art direction, are just fine as they are here. I guess because my expectations were that I would get more Fallout and more Wasteland firefights, and that those were met, that the rest was kind of superfluous. I think the real reason gamers tend to constantly complain is that they constantly set expectations so high that no game can ever meet them, leaving them to always feel disappointed. And that's a rotten shame as it means their experiences with what are some amazing games become so soured by that that they just never are able to enjoy them really.

Gaphics look fine to me, I have run into a significant amount of bugs though. I took me almost 20 hours just to get the game to stop being capped at 27fps. I've been stuck on terrain and unable to move at least a dozen times, and I keep finding massive walls of texture blocking off sections of the map like this:

I only agree with the conversation one. I am with the above poster that the graphics don't bother me, (not sure why everyone expects every new game to come out to surpass the last generation in terms of graphics). I love the combat changes. I haven't experienced a game stopping bug, (only one really is disappearing pip boy). Everything else except those pesky damn nuke suiciders, damnit...

Fallout is a game where you wander around no where to be lost in a Radioactive Oasis. I play in 3rd person and use a controller the Layout for a Keyboard is insane you need to press E to use Vats and need to Tab out when using pit boy just a awkward Combo.

If you Rush the game you will get that no Rush...

The points in the article aren't wrong, the game could be better. That said it's still an incredible game that I haven't been able to set down since it arrived.

While I think the game is pretty good, I did encounter a few annoying bugs already like not being able to do anything after leaving a computer terminal in game or the controls in the builder mode, what the hell is going on there, I can strafe right and walk backwards, but not left or forward, although I can autorun using X, maybe has something to do with me using an azerty keyboard?

There are a few things that make me go wtf, and that is you can't craft ammo, and your companions do not give you xp even if they do all the work, both of which would of been easy for them to implement and are also easy for modders to likely fix as well.

Cap max fps to 58fps to prevent it going over 60fps.
Known bug with the game engine.

the one big problem i have with fallout 4 is once i got out of the vault i lost all motivation to even play the game. i guess i really burned myself out on fallout with the 3rd one and new vegas....oh, to get old.

i was really excited for the game a couple months prior...dunno what happened. it just felt like more of the same from the get go.

I love how all of you keep saying that people complaining are being babies and whining and other bullshit like that. It couldn't POSSIBLY be that, ya know, people are sick of broken ass games that apparently undergo ZERO testing before launch.

I mean, on the Steam forums for the game there's a fucking pinned thread describing what to do to get the FUCKING CONTROLS WORKING! That should NOT be a problem AT ALL in the first place.

I agree that some bugs are OK...that's to be expected...but things like controls not working, constantly getting stuck at terminals and elevators are all issues experience by a ton of players. Even a lot of the people I know that own the game are having similar issues, so it's not like Bethesda couldn't have known before release.

The game is fucked just like all their previous ones...you'd think they'd learn. But I guess we should all just keep our mouths shut, huh? "Oh it works fine for me so it's your computer!"...yeah...there's nooooo way it's the game. I guess all the patches they've released and will continue to release fix what? Nothing?

So much arrogance.

Ive been a little meh with the game. The environment graphic i find are ok however the graphic of the people and animals are not. The lip sync buggy issue is rather annoying. I do find the game to be rather buggy.

Tbh I think the game was over hyped. Im not finding that I want to keep playing it, however I will keep at it.

It's really unfortunate that any dissenting opinion on this game is met with criticism and their concerns invalidated. There are documented issues in this game that go beyond graphics. Bethesda does not deserve a pass.

Nobody's denying bugs exist, but some of those dissenting opinions are so obnoxious that they try to paint it like the game is broken for everyone, and that clearly isn't the case. A lot of these complaints are edge case hardware configurations, example not everyone has a 144hz monitor, but you see those people with one who haven't limited their FPS to 60 screaming "DON'T BUY THIS GAME IT'S BROKEN".

Pretty much everything is fixable with a manual tweak, and it sucks that it requires manual tweaks in some cases, but plenty of people are happily playing the game.

Problem is that everything you said could easily be reversed and make just as much sense. For a lot of people the game is broken (even console users) or at the very least has a lot of issues.

The fact that you're saying that "pretty much everything" can be fixed using simple tweaks shows how fucked Bethesda is. If all I have to do is make a simple .ini change then why couldn't they? Why should I have to for an engine that they've been using for over a decade?

If the game worked fine then there wouldn't be as many people complaining.

People bitch so much about games these days. FO4 is fun. Yeah some stuff could be better, but I could say that about any game.

And publishers release so much rehashed broken shit...what's your point? I guess we should all just not complain about anything, eh? Let these corporations decide what's best for us all!

When did gaming get so political? Maybe I just want to have fun playing a game and not worry about taking a stand against corporations or that I can't play as a transgender character or that my robot butler forgot to ask me my preferred pronoun or whatever. This is actually the least broken Bethesda game yet at launch so I don't really get what people are on about. I'll be having fun playing while you people bitch like little girls on the Internet.

Yeah because this is about politics and transgenders. Not about it being their "least" broken game LOL! Have fun and don't ever complain about wrong doings. So lucky no one complained when Bethesda started charging for mods! Come on now bruh...

Put it aside and come back to it later. The first time I played Fallout 3, I played for about an hour then put it aside for weeks. The next time I fired it up, I was ready to commit. Sometimes you're just not in the mood for a big sprawling game and you won't know until you turn it on.

I hate being in Boston Common because the rendering in that city just overwhelms my computer. I've been trying to tweak the ini files to get it to be a bit better to no avail.

This is my biggest gripe. It's a AAA game, and you remap all the key bindings? There is no reason to have a single key mapped to multiple usages, especially when they can both be used at the same time.

This game is a good game IMO, despite being a port. But the key bindings nearly ruins it for me.

I feel ya, After the first 30 minutes if the game play I just felt like the game was more of a fall out 3.5 / Fall out 3 with a major expansion pack and not a new game.
There are quite a few quirky bugs that I'm finding quite annoying that make the game play a bit of a let down ...
Mutant Mosquitos being able to suck the life of you while wearing Power armor :| .
NPC's walking into walls or steps and not stopping and correcting the directions the were suppose to go.
Covenant Compound quest / mission , poor Honest Dan seems to be lost in the game instead of looking for the compound he keeps walk around like he's a drunk , walking around outside the fortified town. he never leaves the area. I killed 10 minutes just following him walk around out side the small town. :|
Weapon assignments dropping or switching, mini gun assigned to 8 but magically swapping with weapon assigned to another key or not there are all.
Fully loaded weapons no longer loaded but still at full capacity right when switching to X weapon.

My biggest problem with Fallout 4, and pretty much every hotly anticipated game, is that people like him come crawling out of the woodwork. All of his complaints are common issues with pretty much every version of Elder Scrolls, and every Bethesda version of Fallout. Everyone who has played just one of those will know what to expect from Fallout 4. Each time they do a little bit more, but not enough to break from the formula. People like him are only there for forbes to have clickbait.

No disagreements there. It could've used a little more polish. Hopefully they patch it quickly. I know there's already a beta patch out.

We do seem to have lost some of our ability to actually enjoy games over the years ... although complaints about bugs are valid that is the price of PC software (the flexibility of the PC is its worst enemy as it is hard to troubleshoot every possible user configuration) ... PC software has always been buggy (although we usually get it fixed much quicker now than the good old days when we had to order patch discs in the mail sometimes) ... I feel for folks that have game breaking bugs with FO4 but that does happen (and it will happen more and more as the number of PC gamers continue to grow)

That I think is the issue here, and well in a lot of games as of late. Seems they release and don't run like they should till after a month or 2. Maybe they should have a sale date for beta, maybe giving some free cosmetic gear for MMO type games or actual special gear, nostalgic maybe, for single player games. Then have a release date for the game a month later, that hopefully will be the stable game we expect at launch.

I know it seems odd but would fix a lot of the release negativity. Benchmarks at the first sale would still be just beta, so by the release date those benchmarks would likely more accurately show what is to be expected from here out. Also if being the first to play you have to understand that it is a beta launch and therefore if you want a release game nearly bug free then don't buy in at beta, wait for release. Probably would help PR.

I really want to experience the game, although I'd rather see it mature a bit. Personally, I agree with 1/2 with what the guy said because of having been burned by bugs in FO3 mostly. I am not fond of no native 21:9 support of FO4 without editing *.ini, so that's why I am sitting it out for out.
