Popular purveyor of Dark Souls lore and humor on Youtube VaatiVidya decides to use the press' overuse of likening games to Dark Souls as an excuse to talk about other games on his channel. Subtle humor combined with Vaati's signature calmness throughout makes this a good watch, and doubly so if you are also sick of "journalists" describing anything remotely difficult as "Soulslike."

What does it mean if I don't understand a single word from that?

1. I failed to properly communicate why you should watch the video,

or

I think it means I'm out of the loop, because this is literally the first I hear about this epidemic of "journalists" comparing games to dark souls. Which would be meaningless to me anyway as I don't know the first thing about dark souls.

It does happen quite a lot, and sometimes it's warranted (as a lot of copycat games started being developed after Dark Souls exploded in popularity), sometimes it's not (like when it's just used to describe a difficult game).

Vaati gives a pretty good example in the first 6 minutes of the video.

I honestly never understood the souls games. A game isn't good because it's hard and the gameplay in general of Souls game is hack and slash, so it just completely eludes me why soooo many people have a huge boner for all those games. I tried Bloodborne which I guess is the same and the same with that. I do love the art direction and scenery and stuff but nothing i've never seen.

Dark Souls is not the greatest gaming series of all time because of it's difficulty...that's what outsiders who have never played the series perception is...it's so much more then that...you would be right if all it brought to the table was being 'hard'...the Souls series has some of the best level design ever, atmosphere, combat is second to none, so many different varieties of builds, so many weapons, armor, gear aka Fashion Souls, amazing pvp...I could go on and on but I concede that the Souls games are not for everyone but once you 'get it' then you are hooked for life

Another thing to remember is that when Demon Souls came out in '09 there was a serious lack of high quality games that didn't hold your hand in most ways. This often gets tied to the difficulty but really it's just the fact that you have to explore the world to figure out where you should and shouldn't go. It's a lot like the original Zelda in that regard.

I don't know. Most of that could describe a plethora of RPG games, but what they don't have that Dark Souls does is, you guessed it...the difficulty. If you take that away I really don't think you are left with a "best ever" RPG. The fact that people vehemently defend not having difficulty levels sort of supports that argument.

They can add an easier difficulty only if they call it Journalist mode.

I admit I do enjoy the challenge of the game and that its an inherent aspect to the game, but I think if you had different modes of difficulty that you set at the beginning of the game (not whenever you choose), people would still love the Souls games as much.

You would just have the e-peen arguments about which was the better game.

There still aren't a whole lot of games that are actually good comparisons to the Souls games in the aspects that polonyc2 stated (recently we got Nioh and The Surge, but i haven't gotten around to them yet), but there are a lot that are arguably more difficult and aren't as well loved.

I agree...honestly I think most Souls vets would not even consider the games hard anymore...there are still some brutally hard boss fights and areas but overall the difficulty is not that great once you're used to the gameplay...I keep replaying the games for the overall brilliance of the combat and pvp...or to try new builds or weapons...I do love the fact that this series is challenging but it's not the biggest factor...I think From Software are masters of level design, I love the enemy designs and environments etc...I love that they don't hold your hand and spoon feed you where to go and what to do

these type of games are having a bit of a renaissance (like you stated with Lords of the Fallen, The Surge, Nioh etc) but those games did not have the appeal that the Souls series does and that proves that they don't get what makes the Souls series great...those games might be considered hard but don't hold a candle to any Dark Souls/Bloodborne game
