The caps-lock key: WOULD YOU MISS IT?

I use it occasionally. Never for typing out a comment. Mostly it's my being OCD in either Excel or when I activate Windows or another CD key. I like to be all caps in those. It just feels wrong having lower case letters in an excel formula or a CD-key. I inevitably end up just using Shift while I press any letter and releasing shift to press any number, so I turn on Caps Lock to avoid that.

Let's just get rid of all lower case letters.

IF WE'RE ALL YELLING, WOULD WE REALLY BE YELLING ANYMORE?

It would also solve the problem for people who need to use all caps. :D

The sad part is that upper case letters are probably going to get phased out over the next couple centuries, and it's going to be all upper case or all lower case.

To be fair, though, it's a continual process of bastardizing the language to make it easier.

There's nothing quite so stupid as having your Caps Lock set based on how many times you ran during your last gaming session.

I'd miss the caps-lock key if it were taken away. In fact the only keys I don't think I'd miss are the scroll lock and pause keys if they were eliminated.
We should eliminate those, along with Caps Lock and Num Lock, and have a set of buttons that can be mapped to any function... let's call them Function Keys. :) (Or more to the point here, Toggle Keys.)

Of the 'satellite' keys, I use Print Screen and Pause the most--the latter to pause POSTs.

It is really handy when typing in data

Say you want to type in a serial number into a database:

1jk234sdmsi9991

now it is really nice to have those letters uppercase

!JK@#$SDMSI(((!

That is using the shift key and typing fast.

1JK234SDMSI9991

That is using the CAPS Lock key, and typing even faster because I have all 9 fingers to type with

Don't remove it
If that's the format for the field, then the application should apply a mask to put letters into upper case. I don't remember the last time I used form that insisted I on a certain case for postal codes or serial numbers.

I would miss it. I have to use it for descriptions and part numbers in the MRP system I use.
Other than that no.

no i wouldnt miss it. however i work in a school and the amount of kids that do this:

caps lock on, type letter, caps lock off

then look at me confused when i say "why didnt you use the shift key".

YES THEY WOULD MISS IT ;)

Exactly why it should be gone, I see adults do this crap all the time... It's sad.

I use the number lock. Though I suppose we wouldn't need it if the number pad's secondary mappings were no longer present and it functioned like the normal number keys. I use the number pad all the time and wouldn't want a keyboard without it. Caps-lock I could probably live without, but in games I typically use it for something. Which varies by game.

Hell, the software for my logitech keyboard has an option to disable to caps lock key all together. I've had that feature turned on for over 6 months and I never missed the caps lock key once.

Dito! Plus I'm a touch typist.

It's for Chrome OS, so all the games and specialized applications mentioned that require caps won't be a problem since they don't exist. It might as well be time to create a truly universal physical keyboard layout that is the same for all countries. It's probably the case for netbooks already, but desktop keyboards have between 101 and 105 keys. I don't care about the exact numbers, but the point is that you can't switch software keyboard layouts on a physical keyboard without losing some basic letters or symbols.

If the Chrome OS netbooks are used for professional applications, surely these apps can be designed in a smarter way, to autoconvert lowercases into caps for the fields that need it as someone already mentioned. I mean, I was doing that already in the 80s with Nantucket Clipper for MS-DOS apps.

They should really kill off Insert Home Page Up Page down End and Delete They could also kill off one of each of the double keys(alt ctrl shift).

First thing I do when setting up controls is unbind anything attached to caps-lock. Typically I just switch the always run/walk toggle to Ctrl.

I would not miss the caps-lock key. Looking at my keyboard it is perhaps the only key which looks like new. Heck the letter S is completely worn away and W A and D show clear signs of wear.

That probably means you spend too much time running away from things :)

YOU READ ALL CAPS 30% SLOWER OR SOMETHING TRY IT;

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

NOW

ONCE UPON A MIDNIGHT DREARY WHILE I BROWSED WEAK AND WEARY
OVER MANY A QUAINT AND CURIOUS VOLUME OF GENMAY LORE.
WHILE I NODDED, NEARLY NAPPING, SUDDENLY THERE CAME A TAPPING,
AS OF SOME ONE GENTLY RAPPING, FAPPING AT MY OFFICE DOOR

I GOT 7 SECONDS AND 8 SECONDS ON THE SECOND. BUT I WAS TRYING TO GO SLOW SO WHO KNOWS, MAYBE IT IS LIKE DROPPING A DECOY...

ANYWAY, HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU TOGGLE RUN IN FALLOUT!!?!? GET RID OF SCROLL LOCK THAT IS POINTLESS NOW THAT YOU DONT SCROLL IN FRAMES ANYWAY.

Reading it a second time was funnier, lol. I didn't see a difference though.

Wow, you have a "S" key? I'm looking everywhere but the closest I have is some kind of " ˤ " key.
But maybe it's because I have an AZ RTY keyboard. It has so many unused keys they didn't even bother marking the one between the "Z" and the "R."

The wingnut forums and yahoo answers would be pretty empty without caps lock.

I always found a screw driver to be a great solution to capslok on keyboards that you can't disable it on!

The only use I have ever had for the "Pause" or "Break" key is in aborting batch files while they are executing. That's it.

I had forgotten those keys even existed on the keyboard before you mentioned them.

I would ABSOLUTELY miss it. Not only do I use to add emphasis to words (LIKE I JUST DID IN THE LAST SENTENCE, DO YOU SEE IT!?) but I also write in all Caps all day long at work.

It's a Drafting standard to have all the text in capital letters so there's no confusion with whether it's an l or an I.

It would make my job much, much harder. So yes, I would definitely miss the Caps Lock key. And no, holding down shift is not an alternative.

I WOULD ONLY MISS IT AT WORK BECAUSE I HAVE TO OFTEN MAKE LABELS THAT ARE IN ALL CAPS. I GUESS I COULD JUST HOLD DOWN SHIFT INSTEAD.

I've actuated my caps lock key maybe twice in the last two years, and entirely by accident.

I wouldn't keep a shirt with that same track record.

It appears everyone uses CAPS for work, but avoids it 99.9999999982% of the time at home.
