The Age Of The iPod Is Over

Again, you don't actually need to use iTunes to use an iPod.

I know that...I'm saying I don't have to pay the high price for an iPod since I can use a USB drive in my car or stream from my phone over Bluetooth...I get my music from Amazon MP3.

My wife won an 80GB iPod years ago and uses iTunes. It got stolen and she had no choice but to get another iPod in order to listen to her iTunes proprietary horseshit DRM encoded music files. I'm trying to get her to switch to Amazon MP3 to buy all her music going forward. Thankfully, I never got suckered into iTunes, so I'm not locked in to needing an Apple iTunes compatible device just to listen to my music.

Hope that makes sense now. :)

iTunes songs haven't had DRM in quite some time IIRC.

I have an iPod Nano that I use daily in the car and for jogging. Lots of music, dedicated, very small. It can stay in the car while I go where ever I need to. Doesn't drain phone battery (nor do I get interrupted when a text comes in).

Even if true...as I just stated, I never used iTunes before, and if I had, it would have started during the time when all their files had DRM, so I'd be an Apple iPod slave right now.

...has Apple removed their proprietary DRM from everything in iTunes and replaced the old DRM encoded files in everyone's libraries with the new ones for free?

I'm pretty sure I've exported my entire iTunes library to an Android tablet that natively reads AAC and M4A files.

My wife bought me an iPod Touch as a "glad you're still alive" present coming out of my coma last spring, as something to keep me entertained through dialysis and rehab. I swore I'd never have one before then and now I can't live without it. It's far easier to carry around at school than my super-indestructo case-laden iPad; I whip it out of my pocket and take roll for class, put on a drum groove to warm my band up with via AppleTV, and thumb over to the tuner when the trumpets are making my ears bleed.

The education and music tools for the iOS platform are more advanced and robust than for Android, so I just leave my phone at my desk. I've had so much fun with the little device that if a larger-screened iPhone comes out I may consider jumping ship. Maybe. Nah, probably not.

While I don't have an iPod, I do have a dedicated MP3 player for audio that I use in the car and always will have one.

Don't need an MP3 player as it's already built into the head unit in my car.
I just have a USB drive plugged into the USB port, filled with mp3's and playlists.
I can even select the songs or playlists by voice.

A Ford?

I own Ipod Classic 160g. I used it every day in the car.

It has 110gb of music on it. With amazon mp3 deals plus me saving every single CD I've bought since 1990, I have a large collection. This morning alone, i bought 2 mp3 albums from Amazon (Lorde @ 1.99 USD and new Dream Theater @ 3.99 USD). Don't ask about the Lorde album, the wife likes her...

However, I am man of variety in most things so I prefer to have my entire collection with me at all time. Looks at Amazon classical mp3 albums...those things are capacity crushers with 100 or so tracks for 99 cents. When you start putting all this stuff together, the space dwindles.

I also don't want to be at some cellular provider's whims on the network usage. If my ipod crashes, hell with it...I'll put a cheap laptop in the car. In fact i can do that for a lot less $$ than buying an Ipod touch flash based player or Iphone and neither of those give me the capacity i want and need.

So that's my story...everyone different.

And there you have it. Wouldn't it be nice if we government would just post some roving EBT police and when they saw this stuff, just cut that card up as well as cut off his status as a leach.

Never happen out here in California, As far as the left is concerned, they have the right to buy whatever they want with thier cards, even use them at strip club and casinos to pull out cash from thier general walfare payment.

I wouldn't buy an iPod nowadays, but I already own one. I still use it when going on longer trips so that I can spare my phone's battery.

That being said, I don't store music on my phone. I have grandfathered unlimited data so I just stream stuff.

Why hasn't anyone made a lossless audio player with a built-in high-quality DAC and amp that can drive high-OHM headphones?

You do realize that you can fully utilize an iPod without iTunes, right?

Yes. There are workarounds and other software available. Average joes don't want to fuck with that. Even as an enthusiast I really don't want to fuck with it either especially when I already have an Android phone with decent sound and can take 32GB microSD cards.

I also have a SanDisk Clip+ MP3 player that takes MicroSD cards that I keep in my car. The thing is smaller than any iPod ever made, has a super simple interface, and keeps a charge for several months. It's hard to believe that I love this $40 mp3 player more than the 2 iPod Nano's that I previously owned. I rarely use it anymore, but it does come in handy on occasion.

There are still lots of iPods and MP3/PMPs in use. Sales peaked a while ago.

If anyone reaped profits from making media players, Apple was clearly the winner there by far.

the wife still uses hers all the time, probably will until it finally dies
That's not a nice way to talk about your wife!

I considered buying a used iPod classic 160gB for 150 bucks... can't seem to find anything close to that value... but, I'm not a huge music listener and have yet to purchase an apple product, so... no thanks...

May very be, but I don't think my car will not read them off of standard USB flash drive. Anyway, I use Amazon for my music, which is a far superior service compared to iTunes, imo.

I use my 4th gen iPod Touch everyday. I have a 64GB one and I'm running out of space. I wish they came out with 128GB version. I leave it in the car until I want to sync it.

But I use and Android Phone. I like the iPod better for music. I don't want an iPhone. I do have an iPad but it's too big. I want to have my cake and eat it too. With extra frosting as well.

I use an iPod everyday. Have one in my garage in a Logitech speaker dock, have one in my firebird hooked up to my Kenwood radio.
I use my iPhone in my truck since it streams Bluetooth audio.

You might not like apple as a company but they did make some pretty decent quality products. My iPod is 9? years old now. Still works great and the thing has been through hell. Deserts of Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Persian Gulf, and sea's and oceans the world over not to mention a plethora of gyms and saunas with all the grit and grime therein. Thing even took a 7.62 ricochet. It's a little slower than it used to be and the bottom buttons are stubborn at times, but it plays great and the battery still works!

They use their money for toys and get government assistance (from your tax dollars) to cover their needs.

I did my grocery shopping for the week on Sunday and watched some fucker in front of me buy tri-tip steak, etc. with his EBT..... and then use cash to buy beer. Shit, I work and can just afford fucking chicken and ground beef, forget about beer or tri-tip steak... meanwhile the govt. takes my money and gives it to shitbags like that guy who gets so much of it he can blow it on shit I wish I could afford. Shit, he should be eating chicken, I should be the one eating steak... damit - I'm the one that's paying for both of our grocery bills.

That is nothing. The other day here in Prescott AZ i watched a man and woman with 3 babies buy 180 worth of food with food stamps. Then as I left I saw them at the lottery machine and actually stayed there to watch them put 80 dollars in this machine on lottery tickets. I was playing on Redbox and watching. I am disgusted with this and it needs to stop.

I have never had any aid from government, only my family. Why can this happen?

1. Price is too freaking high
2. There is no drag and drop for easy mp3 transfer, if your device is outdated you're forced using iTunes to swap songs in and out
3. Its Apple?

I have an earlier gen iPod touch (that only plays music, no apps will run on it because they can no longer update on obsolete hardware making it junk) I no longer use, my phone is good enough 99% of the time when I'm on the go.
For a dedicated device, (I go to sleep with earbuds listening to music to drown out the background noise) I loaded a stripped down Cyanogenmod Android 4.0 rom onto my old Evo 4g with the Viper Audio equalizer. Battery life lasts days so long as I'm using the volume buttons to change tracks and not running that screen constantly.
Really, our phones do so much, audio, video, camera, camcorder, mobile internet and email and its a phone too!
Gone are the days we carry around 50 little devices and just take the single all in one.

Ever since I got an mp3 player that had the same amount of space as my shuffle, same size and had a song title screen I stopped using my ipod. Then when I found out about this magical thing called BT and some nice BT headphones, I stopped using my mp3 player :D

I remember getting a first gen iPod Nano. Damn that thing was so awesome when I got it, I loved it. Then I bought a second gen iPod Touch. I loved that even more, although it started to become less about music and more about playing games, browsing the web and using something like AIM or FB. I sold it about 2 years ago when I got my first smartphone, just didn't need it anymore. I've been satisfied with the quality of my iPhone 5 and Spotify(extreme quality which is like 320kbps or something) so it works. I'm kind of glad I'm not an audiophile, since I'm not as picky.

I still use one in my car. My phone has horrible battery life and I'd rather use the ipod than use battery power on the phone.

I own a Fiio X3 which plays 196k/24bit FLAC files and has a 24bit DAC + preamp built in for my nice headphones. People always ask me why I'm not using my phone and then I play some high-resolution album on my $500 headphones - they respond, 'oh...'

Agreed. Unless you are jogging and need something like an iPod shuffle, you're money would be better spent on a Fiio X3 as opposed to some other flavor of iPod for DAC/DAP for 200 bucks.

I can see the purpose of using a dedicated MP3 player when you're exercising or at the gym. Losing an MP3 player or having one get damaged isn't nearly as devastating as losing or breaking your cell phone.

With that said, it should be fairly obvious that the demand for such devices should be way, way down.

I don't really see the point of saying the "age of the iPod is over" just because it's functionality has been combined with that of a smartphone.

That would be sort of like saying that the "age of the smartphone is over" because people are instead buying fancy MP3 players like the iPhone that are also capable of making phone calls.

But who goes to the gym, etc and doesn't take their cellphone? Even someone who has a dedicated MP3 player is almost certainly still going to bring their phone. So isn't it really just a matter of two devices vs one?

I bring my phone to the gym, but it stays in the locker with my stuff. It's too big, and already has crap battery life without using it as a media player. My ZuneHD is smaller, lighter, and has great battery with better sound than my iPhone or Nexus 5.

I most certainly do not bring my cell phone to the gym. I lock it in my car, with my watch and wallet.

Pretty sure most people don't go running with their cell. I keep mine in my bag with my change of clothes. Most smart phones are too bulky.

They have better jobs than you? I'm kind of confused by that statement, you have to realize that if you go to one of the better schools in better areas, people will have more money to spend on themselves. You probably won't find tons of expensive smartphones in the slums.

Yes you will... they'll have all the expensive smartphones that they stole from those spoiled brats whose parents buy them everything they want. ;) LOLOL
