TF2 / SRCDS Commands

Looking to play online with my son who is out of state at the moment and thought it would be a great idea if I could setup a server so he and I could play.

So I configured srcds by using the following documentation but I am confused as how to start a game and could use some help, how would I kick off a simple control point match?

Also, could I join the match if I am running the server as well?

I did find this here, and at first glance it looks like it's not recommended to host AND play on same machine, but after sifting through 12 pages, it seems people do it all the time

I've done this before, and if your machine is powerful enough, you should be able to play on it at the same time.

My suggestion is just find an empty server and have both of you log in. Much easier than trying to setup a server.

You can do it without much problem since TF2 is not that demanding (well I dont know what your computer is like)
Posting this on steam forums would probably yeild faster answers though.
The biggest problem most people run into is getting their network setup so people outside can see and connect to the server.
