Tesla Owner Credits Autopilot Feature for Saving His Life

I've seen enough of these videos where a normal driver will steer to avoid, over correct, lose control, spin and then crash into the barrier or spin off into the ditch.
Where as the autopilot held pretty good.

I also think most people claiming they can do better are full of it, because I don't have such faith in my fellow drivers, I don't know why anyone else would.
 
Another brain dead cruise control moron in the left lane isn't news. Pass and then move right. And passing at +2mph isn't passing.
 
Hah saw the video. Here in MD the guy wouldve just merged anyway and then slammed on his brakes for you having the gall to not get out of his way faster.

You can't take the idiot out of the car, but you can make cars that saves you from the idiot.
 
To be fair this was hardly a life threatening situation, the way the car reacted was more dangerous than the entire situation was.

And I'm pro self driving cars, but I'm against a glorified cruise control being marketed as such ruining the reputation of actual self driving technology even before it hits the market.

It couldve been depending on the other car. If he had continued to merge and the car/driver didnt react I could see that accident being nasty so close to a divider.

But I agree the car overreacted. All it had to do was slow down and *maybe* move a foot to the left, which is what I wouldve done. Well in addition to hitting the horn and cussing loudly at the asshole ;).

It's perfectly legal and normal to travel in the left lane in New England. We are even allowed to pass on the right side except for undivided two lane roads. You only need to keep right on freeways if you are going below the posted limit, though if you are only going the limit in the left lane, you are going to piss off a lot of people.

That said... How do other cars with collision avoidance tech handle the situation? A lot of vehicles are now coming with emergency breaking and Lane keeping technologies and I have seen dash cam videos of automated systems avoid similar situations. I also don't think this would have been a fatal crash. It's good that the system avoided the accident, but It didn't look like a hard to avoid situation either.

Yes I did! I've had people try to take me lane while I was in it and i didn't need a computer to help me You are supposed to speed up when passing people and the tesla was clearly hanging in the guy's blind spot. Let me quote a quick explanation for you:

You're preaching to the choir about passing on the left lane.

However, passing to me does not mean you have to go 20 over the speed limit just to overtake. It also doesn't give the other driver any reason to merge into the left lane with a car occupying it no matter what speed the car in that lane is going. In this video the driver was doing everything a normal driver would do and his description of the events did not indicate that he was not paying attention.

I live in Texas and frequently do 4-7 hour drives down I-35 (which is mostly a two lane affair) and I loathe people that cruise on the left lane but I also hate the people that use the left lane to go 90mph and prevent normal overtaking. On those drives, as mindless and tedious as they are, I can easily see a car merging into my lane without me noticing quick enough. I've had close calls before and this video seemed like one of those close calls except the car took over.

It must be nice to be the only human that's able to see everything around them at all times, and always 110% alert, never making a single mistake....... I guess you are the only person that can throw the first stone.......

He wouldn't need to defend anything.... The other guy changed lanes when it wasn't clear, it would have been 100% his fault if there was an accident..... Even if the tesla was purposely driving in the guys blind spot. If you're the one changing lanes, it's your job to make sure it's clear and safe to do so. Claiming the tesla driver should have been paying attention and not zoning out is just dumb assumptions based on a video. He may very well have been about to take control, but autopilot can react much faster.....

It's so easy to comment on what someone should have done, or what you would have done in the situation while sitting in a chair by your computer.

The Toyota straight up brake-checked the Tesla on purpose. People don't do that unprovoked. I think there's a reason we only see 8 sec of video.

This is what I saw as well. Swerves almost completely into left lane, brake checks and then gets back into the right lane. I think there may be more to this encounter than the 8 seconds provided. It's possible the Tesla driver didn't have their hands on the wheel as stated and the other driver wanted to see how the Tesla would react.

I think you may have misinterpreted my statement and I am not sure if you did it to pick a fight or if it was a legit thing. But let me rephrase to see if that helps. I responded to the statement that "people zone out" simply to point out that zoning out does not constitute any sort of defense for either person. Yes it happens, but no matter which party you are in that video you still have a responsibility to recognize and correct the issue before it becomes a problem. Saying "oh well it happens" its not a legit excuse for either party.

Legality is one thing, being a courteous driver is another. I see someone coming up behind me while I'm in the left lane, I move over if I'm not overtaking cars on the right. If I'm traveling approximately the same speed/slightly faster than the cars on the right, I push the gas to pass the cars on the right and then move over and slow down.

Most systems are braking only and don't affect steering. Therefore, most systems would simply brake rather than swerve, if they sense the closure rate is dangerous.

I suspect you're right with passing lane camping... I'm amazed every time I go to the US and have to drive and there's a mentality of just picking a lane and sticking to it - no real 'keep right' rule.
