Tesla Key Fob Security Allows for a Hacker to Steal a Car in Less Than 30 Seconds

You would think that a car full of tech from a company with in-house software design team would have at least one guy with a relevant take on security. What the actual fuck, Tesla?

Eh what? The physical key was a complete joke that anyone with a tiny bit of training was able to bypass a myriad of different ways. We ended up going to fobs and keyless because the actual physical key was basically useless. Those keys were basically just knobs on an switch. You could bridge the switch, you could use mechanical force to overpower the lock mechanism, etc.

Acting like a physical key, any physical key, is secure is pure fallacy. Hell, when you get into actual *rated* key systems, they aren't rated on how impenetrable they are but on how long they take to bypass.

The physical keys with an embedded chip were decently secure. If you wanted to dupe one you needed physical access to the key. If you wanted to compromise it on the car end it was more variable, but in lots of instances you needed a paired key to add another key. To compromise the car end you needed equipment and access to the car and had to do the deed AFTER getting physical access to the car. No it wasn't perfectly secure, but all keyless stuff to date is a step down in the level of security, some of it barely qualifies as security theater.

If we're just talking about fast:

When was the last time you heard of a tow truck being pulled over because the car was "stolen" ?

Repo men when they take a car within 15-20 min at most are calling the local police department to report the car was repo'ed.

Isn't the parking drum brake on the rears? That tow truck just rocketed out of there after hooking it up.
When in park the front wheels on that car are locked the rear's free spin. If the car was rear wheel drive then he would had to pick it from the back. All wheel drive cars would need dolly's before being moved so not to damage the drive line.

I've worked for a few repo guys, they don't care if it's front, rear, or AWD, they hook and book and the guy who owns the car gets stuck with the repair bill. If he doesn't get current on the loan the repair bill gets added to whatever he owes after the car is auctioned. It's kind of messed up actually.

I was just gunna say the repo doesn't care what happens to the car, and most people come out pissed as hell when someone is taking their car. Repo is the middleman and most get paid based on delivery to the yard not the condition on which it arrives.
