Tesla’s production floor is a "hotbed for racist behavior," an African-American employee claimed in a lawsuit in which he alleged black workers at the electric carmaker suffer severe and pervasive harassment. Marcus Vaughn alleges that employees and supervisors regularly used the “N word” around him and other black colleagues. He was later terminated for "not having a positive attitude."

According to Monday’s complaint, Musk sent an email to Tesla factory employees on May 31. “Part of not being a huge jerk is considering how someone might feel who is part of [a] historically less represented group,” Musk wrote in the email. “Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologize. In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology.”

Until others come forward or proof is presented its the company, its HR, and management all saying he has a poor attitude and is bitter vs just him saying the whole company is racist.

While I agree with you, in today's hypersensitive environment, even allegations are enough to do serious damage to an individual or company.

I second that motion, there is just way to much of this me too crap going on. It's not healthy for the victim and the defendant. If someone calls someone a racists its automatically applied at true and goes for sexual harassment. These things could be based solely on 1 individuals perception and not truth. To quick to judge rather than get the full story about whats really going on.

Remind me again of the prosecutions against false racist accusations. The spray-painted car on Halloween, the house in California, cadets at the Air Force Academy, and several other incidents spring to mind.

Since the current climate has any speech which the listener deems offensive is given the status of a crime (hate speech???), then it's a no-lose proposition to hurl accusations.

Bully for him. I hope he destroys Tesla. It'd be kind of ironic: the dream of the liberals destroyed by the liberal jurisprudence system.

People just casually dropping the N word right in front of him and other black people? Cmon, even the most dimwitted racists arent going to do something that could easily land them a punch to the jaw. And something tells me Tesla doesnt exactly attract the racist crowd for employment opportunities, even in the manufacturing side of things.

Bingo. Racism at the company level is illegal. If you felt terminated (or treated differently) because of your race go fucking sue them, you will easily win.

Oh wait? You don't have ANY evidence? You want to play the victim mentality after getting butt-hurt from low performance and being a shitty employee? Business as usual.

Fuck this stupid virtue signaling bullshit we live in.

I blame political correctness and SJW's for this. Encouraging people not to assimilate and adhere to company norms promotes the "racism" (or sexism) excuse for deadbeats.

Remember folks, this is in California. The state where, if you don't throw yourself down in front of and worship the feet of minorities for their minority-ness, you're a card-carrying racist/bigot.

People have become so desensitized to these allegations that noone takes them seriously anymore, because they've been throwing around terms like racism and sexism willy nilly for so long. I'd wager even if such allegations can become a big thing on social media they never actually affect the success of a company.
Because professional rent-a crybabies never put their money where their mouth is anyway.

he prob got fired for being constantly being an asshole nobody wanted to work around and now trying to play the "race card". Virginia (where i live) is an "employ at will" state, we don't even have to give a reason why we're firing you. so don't come to work w/ a bad attitude and do your job and you have nothing to worry about. sounds like this dude's just wants a handout. this is an assembly line... not the shipyard, yo!!!

Not really a meme when it's an everyday thing. Many people want to paint them as overly sensitive or "playing the race card", but when you hear offensive things on day to day basis, it gets old and starts to become hurtful. It's like the guy who thinks a woman is a "bitch" because he gives her a slight compliment and she outright ignores him or dismisses him, but fails to fathom that he's literally the 20th guy to do so on the past couple hours. It does tend to make one touchy and it's been something that really is a career killer in many cases, so it goes unreported.

I think patiently waiting for this specific case to play out in the court system before making a judgement publicly would be a smart thing here for people on either side of the argument. Generalizing without proof either way is typically not a very effective way to get people to side with an argument.

But what do I know, please continue with with your respective opinions.

We live in an age where everyone has a pocket computer capable of recording sound. If harrasment is pervasive, getting proof should be easy.

I know I would have recorded the racists before making a complaint. It would be the first thing that occurred to me.

You must be new to... well, modern times. Facebook, Twitter, here, reddit, most MSM, etc. are all generalizing and making judgments even before the other side even has a chance to defend themselves...

Its amazing how the Tesla factories haven't been outright shutdown by OSHA or some other federal entity given the amount "issues" the company has running these facilities. You would think that a UNION which protects these workers would be actively doing something about it, otherwise why pay union dues for something that isn't doing anything for you?

OH WAIT... There isn't a Tesla Worker Union. Just google "Tesla Worker Union" and the first thing that pops up is:
Federal labor officials are going after Tesla over alleged workers' rights violations

Basically, the UAW has been calling foul on Tesla for years now. They have been trying to establish a presence at these factories and are actively doing so. But a quick google search reveals:
Fiat Chrysler, UAW officials accused of laundering money through hospice

The UAW is helping itself at US workers' expense

So yeah... I don't believe this at all. Its another stab at trying to forcefully unionize a companies workforce so they can collect union dues.

Multi-billion dollar corporations are so far above racial lawsuits nowadays because of "Diversity". Diversity has little to do with creating a "special" workplace, and more to do with shielding you from getting sued. Most lawyers won't touch job discrimination cases these days unless you have absolute physical proof, or the company you are suing is being run by only white males. Most racial discrimination cases are against small time companies, that can't afford the "Diversity Shield" For this case to get any media attention screams to me of a lawyer that was paid off by the UAW to pursue this action.

Don't get me wrong, Im not a tesla fanboy, Im just someone trying to see this from all angles. It could very well be this is an actual act of discrimination, but given the current circumstances I would hedge a bet that the situation is being manipulated.

All the parties in this situation could kick rocks for all I care. I just hate the fact that these assholes manipulate a situation, and then it gets set as a legal precedent, thus screwing over everyone else.

We are supposed to be living in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty, but then again that has not been the case for nearly my whole life. Its very much you are guilty until proven innocent.....the media is the front man for this type of thinking. Until these allegations are proven by evidence I can't help but think this is a setup and someone wants Tesla to fail as a company and put them out of business for sure.

THis is typical mud-slinging nonsense towards Tesla - funded and trumped up (pun intended) by a rogues gallery of those with an ax to grind, yellow journalism, and other crap. I'm glad to see them respond as EODetroit mentioned. As someone who is probably more liberal (ie socially and economically left-leaning in this context) than most on the forum, I'm equally annoyed at a culture of political correctness where insult and guilty-until-proven-innocent witch trials reign, as well as people who make up falsehoods seeking "liberal tears", especially moneyed interests on both sides trying to take down a competitor through sleazy methods and the so called "journalists" who exploit or are on the payroll to create situations of outrage with falsity

My phone's browser will come up to some Sprint default news page, and every single time it comes up there is a new headline of some some actress saying they were harassed by someone...every time. At first, my thoughts were, "Terrible". But at this point when it's someone different every time it has just become noise, which is not how it should be.

I'm just always amazed that it's after they get fired that they want to report hostile work conditions that went on for months. This applies to all sorts of harassment, racial, sexual, religious, whatever. If it was so bad, why didn't you say anything? If it's your manager being an ass, go to his manager, or HR. Any place worth working (and I assume it is if you put up with this shit) has a means to report issues with co-workers that protects the person doing the reporting. If that fails, get the local labor board involved.

I'm not saying this crap doesn't happen, just that there is no reason to put up with it these days. I believe in taking responsibility for yourself, and holding others accountable for their actions. Guess I'm showing my age.

I've reported people for belligerent or unprofessional conduct at my job, and for the most part the issue goes away. Either the person figures out how to act at work, or they are gone. This has ranged from insane BO (I'm talking "doesn't wash" bad. Thankfully they got clean and even landed a girlfriend) to someone who would start political arguments, work themselves up to spewing profanities, and keep on even when everyone ignored them (gone). I just don't see why anyone would put up with stuff like this for any length of time these days. I understand that there are small companies, or Mom&Pops where things get murky, but this is freaking Tesla. I know they have the typical HR setup where you can just report someone not conducting themselves properly at work. I've also quit a management job when I was told essentially, "You can't have the slaves running the plantation." after trying to promote a black guy to assistant manager. They were promptly reported to the labor board along with the archived email, and I poached him as soon as I could at my new job.

Even before involving your employer, why not say, "Hey, I'd appreciate it if you didn't do/say that." when people cross the line of professionalism at work. If confrontation makes you uncomfortable, it's still better then dealing with daily assaults on yourself and those around you. If that's gonna be an inevitable "Brown Note Experience", just report them. For the record, Captain Stinky was asked multiple times by several people to at least use a strong deodorant and the soap boxer was told repeatedly that work was not the right place for his pulpit.

While I agree with Unions as a concept, they rely on Union leadership being able to focus on the long term health of the industry (and thus it's workers) rather then trying to line their own pockets. As history shows, greed is a matter of when not if. I think the "Employee Owned" companies are a better idea, where everyone has a stake, and thus an incentive to better the company for their own gain.
