[Target] Farscape Complete Series $47.99 + $2.99 SH

Ergh. Great price for an awesome series, but every episode is on Netflix instant view right now. Hard to justify having this set.

That's a great price. Fry's charges $129.99 for the set, and I thought I was getting a good deal at Amazon when I paid $74.99.

For those of you who haven't seen it, it's an awesome series, BTW. It rapidly became my favorite sci-fi series of all time. Note that it's not really the "complete" series, since they got cancelled unexpectedly and left it hanging. "The Peacekeeper Wars" is available everywhere for pretty cheap and neatly wraps up the storyline in miniseries format.

Can someone tell me why was it cancelled? It seems like a lot of people liked it. I seen all other great scifi series and this is the only one left that I haven't seen

SciFi (now SyFy) has this thing about cancelling highly rated shows once a more highly rated show comes along. For Farscape it was SG-1.

It isn't a great series. It isn't even a decent series. It's pretty terrible really. It has a strong cult following but I don't think it was ever really all that popular. Certainly not on the level of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica or Stargate SG1.

SyFy's decision making in the last several years is highly suspect. Things like adding Wrestling to their lineup come to mind. WTF does that have to do with science fiction? Its fiction, but there is no science to it. Just homoerotic undertones and bad acting.

I don't think SG1 was "more highly rated" than Farscape; it just made SciFi more money since it was much much cheaper to produce.

I'm pretty sure that Stargate was rated higher than Farscape ever was.

Wow, thanks for the threadcrap. It's still steaming.

The series was worth watching IMHO just for the pop culture references Crichton manages to squeeze in at every turn. The Blazing Saddles reference "Don't nobody move, or the human gets it!" comes to mind. Or my favorite: DRD Pike, who communicated "no" and "yes" answers by blinking its lights once or twice.

It had a tragic love story, a menacing villain, loyal and not-so-loyal companions, and a sense of wonder. You had no idea what was coming next. And it had honest-to-goodness Muppets, fer crissake. What's not to love?

I think the high cost of production in Australia was cited as one of the reasons for its cancellation. Bean counters couldn't justify keeping the show going for what it cost vs what it earned. Nothing new there.

It has some of the worst acting I've ever seen, terrible characters, and horrid visual effects. Especially creature effects. As for the villain, if an extra from a geriatric bondage fetish film is your idea of a menacing villain then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Many shows suffer the same fate. It sucks but its rare that anything can be done about it.

Perhaps at the end of SG1's run, but not at the time of cancellation. Farscape was SciFi's highest rated show.

On October 1, 2001, Bonnie Hammer, the President of the Sci Fi Channel had announced the unprecedented 2-year renewal of Farscape: “We are excited to renew our commitment to this smart, sexy, intelligent and fun series that rewrites the book on sci-fi entertainment. Farscape is not only the most ambitious original series on basic cable, we think it’s one of the best-written shows on television, period. It’s no wonder that it’s the top-rated series on SCI FI for three years running

That really surprises me. I can't tell you how shocked I am by that.

Just going to disagree with you there.
Compare season one of Farscape to season one of Next Generation....Star Trek ends up looking like a joke in comparison.
Better stories, better acting, more BELIEVABE in short.
People act like people, not some kind of superhuman socialist idiots.
I will grant that the last season was not as good as the earlier ones, but the worst Farscape episode is hands down better then the best episode of most other sci-fi shows out there.
And WTF is with the wrestling they run now?

I think both Farscape and TNG are both well well written and acted shows. I absolutely love Farscape, was with it when it first came on TV, all the way to the end. Was defiantly a member of the "cult" of fans, which is growing btw. Hell they cant even keep the seasons stocked in Netflix.

Same with TNG, its been great watching all the seasons online now.

I have to thank the OP - when I saw this I jumped on it - but they were sold out and I was pissed. My Fiancee overheard me and secretly bought it from another place only that was about 20 dollars more, and got it just in time for my birthday. Literally, two day gap. She is good.

Now, off to watch Farscape again (which btw, she is a fan too!).

Nice price, I picked it up for ~$50 on Amazon awhile back. One of my favorite series ever. Totally worth having.

Too bad there's no Blu-Ray, though. :(

After all of that, I have to say I'll be taking all motherboard reviews with a grain of salt. Lol. Really though, farscape is my favorite series of all time, season 4 was weak by comparison to 1-3, but still solid. Especially compared to the cookie cutter show that was SG-1. Find new planet, go to new planet, end up unable to reach gate for some reason, solve issue before end of episode, go home. Rinse and repeat.

I think they are still working on the webisodes deal, I have not been following that closely though. I have all the comics they put out since it picks up where Peacekeeper Wars left off, and leads into the webisodes.

you know, I've seen you shit on several shows here in hot deals instead of genmay or entertainment sub-forum where your thread craps belong. I'm curious, what scifi shows do you like?

btw, for anyone else considering this set it's worth every penny. For it's time, and budget, the FX are decent. Instead of being a pompous ass or worrying about whether any of your friends might call you a fag for liking the show, just check it out. If you don't like it, I'm sure you can sell the set for all or most of what you paid for it. It has good acting, great individual stories and story arcs covering several shows and even seasons. There are two characters that are amimatronics that are done well (movement, facial expressions, etc) but some folks couldn't get past the "they're muppets in space dude!". To each their own, watch an unraped copy of empire strikes back and then revenge of the sith and tell me which yoda looked better.
