even while im writing this, its lagging my system down to a crawl.

it comes it spurts pretty much?

no idea why its doing this, it was fine not 3 hours ago, then i did a restart and it started doing this,

since then ive restarted like 5 times trying to figure out whats causing it no luck :/

programs are taking 5 minutes or more to open sometimes.

ive booted into safe mode, and did a norton anti virus search, and an AV anti virus search.

also i have run a spy bot search and destroy search, and im running a stinger search right now but its going so slow probably going to take another 20 minutes.

    windows xp pro

    3.0 intel processor, hyper threading.

    1 gb ram

    200 gig main hard drive

    40 gig backup.

... I just recovered from some sort of odd virus last week.. which didnt act anything like this.

ever since ive recovered from that last virus, ive been running Zone alarm 24/7, with high/high settings for blocking stuff.

    and now this happens

once again thanks for any help.

    Nothing has been found yet.
    0 spyware
    0 virus's or trojans yet.

why is system idle process taking up all my processor power? it doesnt make sense.

can i turn it off? i dont care about what it does, id like to turn it off, since its running constantly.

? no its not a joke?

heres the thing i just double checked system idle processes, is showing 99 under cpu

but when i go to cpu usage statistics, its only showing 2 %

every program i have is taking forever to start.

sigh. Stinger never found anything either...

    any reccomendations?

"IDLE" is the do-nothing state. It's normal for the OS to be in idle mode when it's not doing anything. :p

Anti-virus programs set to the highest state slows many computers down to a crawl since it scans everything. Little memory (i.e. 256MB) compounds that problem several times over.

*trying not to laugh* yup system idle means ur cpu is idling... so 99 percent is a good thing

If the idle process is using 99% of the CPU...then your CPU is only being 1% utilized and the other 99% is doing absolutely nothing.

look at it in reverse...99%idle means you've got99% of the cpu 's ability available..the other programs will show you what percentage of cpu time they are using..so if you have a program that is maybe just monitoring like antivirus it'll show zero and then amybe jump to 7 or 10 for a split second and them back down to zero

ok so i was confused you are correct, but its still very odd why my computer is lagging up so badly. it cant be processor, so something is accessing my hard drive hard core.

And i do fold, have 2 computers that fold.

A failing hard drive can cause the symptoms you are describing.

I can think of a few...but I'll post only one:

If not on here, atleast google it. Had you googled "System Idle Process", you would have avoided the previous several people laughing at you or asking if it was a joke.

I'm trying a new approach. I simply link to a google search of the thread title. It's so quick and answers quite a few of the threads, generally it's one of the first 5 hits. :(
