System Hang when using a wireless adapter

Well the topic explains the most of it but basically I have this Wireless Adapter for my laptop. Its an IBM 11a/b/g adapter and my laptop is an IBM thinkpad. Basically I have no problems with CPU Usage or anything when I am not using the adapter. No system hangs or anything when I have the wireless card disconnected and no problems when using the built in ethernet adapter. What happens is when I am connected to a wireless network the CPU spikes from 2% to anywhere above 50% creating problems like the mouse or sound skipping... System hangs. So I am curious if there is anything I can modify in the hardware settings for my wireless cardbus that may make this annoyance go away.
