Anyone have any insight as to how to get this Synology box to see the HP 1/8 G2 as a drive via SAS?

Wow...no one? Not a sole user of Synology RS box and LTO6 tape drives?
If you want a self-contained solution, you would have to find backup software that has been compiled to run on the Synology. It would have to support both the LTO drives as well as the associated changer electronics. I don't know of any that will support what you want. Worst case scenario you could probably just use tar or LTFS to dump stuff to tape. If you want to do some coding, take a look at amanda or bacula (open source) and you might to be able to compile it or mod it for the synology.
