So I finally picked up a PS3 and some games. Other than games...what can I do with it? Sony has been toting this thing as a transcendental entertainment/computing nexus that "oh yeah...it also plays games too, if you really want to use it for that". So here I am, staring at my XMB main screen, going "Alright PS3...impress me". But really, it doesn't seem to have much up its sleeve.

What all can I make it do? It's got all these nice menus for photos, music, videos, etc, and it's even apparently very open to the possibility of installing another OS on it, but all of those menus are empty and I'm ignorant to everything Linux. What sorts of stuff can I do to really get the most out of my PS3 and make it my own? Hell, I'd be happy with making my own XMB themes or something if that's even possible.

Is this a joke? The consoles (any of them) don't do anything magic on their own. They are as fun as the media that you use them for.

My pc isn't very fun when I have nothing but excel installed on it either. Buy a bluray movie, download some games or videos online on your ps3, buy a game or three.

in other words, use it.

You can load your own images and movies onto it using the network or a memory card and use it for porn. Right out of the box, I was streaming porn off my roommate's computer. Sony wins the console war when it comes to porn.

You can install Yellow Dog Linux on it. Then once it's on there you can say to yourself "Great. I installed Linux on my PS3. I can't really do much with it because I don't know how to use Linux very well and many Linux programs don't run on PowerPC CPUs, but yeah. Linux."

If you still need ideas, you could add all the people from the "Post your PSN ID" thread to your friends list (every single one of them) and send them all messages asking what you should do with your PS3. I'm sure they would be a great help.

Sweet. Thanks for all the condescen...er, helpful replies. No need to be douchebags. I just figured that with Sony hyping up the "Playstation Experience" and trying to convince everyone that it does more things than the 360 and other consoles, it would at least have some form of decent networking functionality with my PC or something, or maybe there would be cool 3rd party apps to install and tinker with or something.

LOL sorry, I wasn't trying to be condescending. Honest. I went through all of that, except the messaging stuff, when I bought my first PS3. I spent $600 + tax on a 60gb PS3, and all it did was sit there and look pretty. I guess I know how you must feel.

Download tv shows and fill up the HDD. Install Tversity to stream media files to the PS3. Install PlayOn to watch Hulu and CBS stuff.

Its a media device, theres only so much media in the world, really the only thing it cant do is record TV shows.

Download some demos, fold for the [H]orde, buy, rent, or borrow some good games, watch a BD movie or 4...

Let see, stream videos, audio, internet video (like youtube or podcasts), and photos (music with slideshow) to your PS3. Use it as a jukebox and play your audio randomly with visualization on your TV (yeah it looks dope). Browse the internet (eh) and fold. Oh, and play Bluray. Sounds like quite a bit. Oh yeah, and download demos.

And yes, it has customizable themes for the OS. You can make your own, download them from PSN, or import them from your computer. I don't believe they've implemented a way to directly install a theme from a networked computer though. You'll need some sort of media to transfer it like a USB drive. Really the "only" networking functionality both the 360 and the PS3 have is for streaming media.

I find it pretty surprising that you shelled out that much money for a device you don't have the slightest bit of knowledge on.

Reminds me of the people I know that build a bad ass computer, boot it to the Windows desktop and stand back for you to awe. "Umm... what am I supposed to be looking at?" The PS3 is a tool to load games and media, nothing more :) Pop a game in.

Just went through 10 hours of metal gear 4 on mines, it really is a great game :)

-Setup a media server, and stream your music, videos to your TV via the ps3 wirelessly
-Check out a couple of blu-ray titles (if you're into it)
-Folding @ Home !
-Play Uncharted, Call of Duty 4 online, and most importantly, MGS4 (but not before watching the 5 part MGS retrospective videos on gametrailers to catch up with the story

Yeah, sony's commercials just tell you that if you buy one and put it in your house, it will magically entertain you and also be your robot butler.

If you smoke and drink beer amazingly beautiful women in bikinis will flock to you.

You could say the same for any advertising, cause that's what it is.

I, too wondered this. So I set out on to do some testing. I figured it would easily be able to complete the easiest of tasks, but it failed. Cramming bread in the drive didn't make toast, it just made a mess. So this $400 toy can't even make toast! sheesh...

That's like sitting a car, saying "Go," and expecting it to move. Genius.

I'm curious to know these tasks.

Yea, it’s like this OP thinks the PS3 reads your mind while you’re checking out at BestBuy, downloads all your favorite music/vids on the trip home wirelessly, and auto plays music/vids when you’re in the mood for it, and automatically plays games when it reads your mind and knows your ready.

It’s like buying an iPod and expecting it to be loaded up with all of your favorite toons.

I wasn't criticizing sony, I was mocking the op.

No toast?!?! Insanity! To add to that, despite some pictures that insinuate otherwise, it also will not act as a George Foreman grill. This thing really is useless as a kitchen appliance.

This statement confused me.

Not if you put it into a 360 fanboy context. Altho I'd love to know how someone could be disappointed with LBP. To be disappointed with something surely you need to have put some time into it to give it the benefit of the doubt, add to that a game that isn't being released for another month does make you wonder

Ah yes, I figured it was something of the sort. Yeah, everything I've seen of LBP is just awesome.

I think it'll be a good game personally, but saying nobody could be dissappointed with it at this point, you know, BEFORE it's released, is a bit silly.

Here we are now, Entertain us

sing distinctly, we don't wanna! here we are now, we're nirvana!

No it does not. Some things should not be in HD. Porn benefits from the fuzziness of SD, there are just some things that do not need THAT much clarity.

I always find this quote humorous when I come across it. Now, isn't real life better than HD? Now when you're having sex with a female in real life, everything is very clear, does this mean you don't like sex with real women? :p

but saying anyone could be dissappointed with it at this point, you know, BEFORE it's released, is a bit silly.

Fixed :D

Not sure how anyone could be disappointed tbh, that would imply you've played it substantially in my book which I would say is nigh on impossible unless your a beta tester or one of the games devs.

I honestly don't know why PS3 owners are so hyped up about Little Big Planet. Yeah I mean it looks like a fun platformer, but is there seriously nothing coming out for PS3 that it getting so much interest?
