Swedish researchers claim that their teams have been successful in writing information to DNA strands and after a Million year simulation, successfully read back the information. Interesting possibilities, that. :cool:

It’s possible that such DNA data encoding could provide a more reliable extremely long-term data storage protocol than any digital-mechanical method, such as optical disks, holographic disks or solid state storage.
 
Since DNA is basically an organic chemistry instance it is affected over time by chemical reactions with its environment. That corrupts the information. The Grass team solved this in two ways; first by adding Reed-Solomon codes to the data for error checking and correction (ECC).

Secondly, by encasing the DNA in 150nm diameter silica glass spheres. They likened this to the idea of reading DNA from fossilized bones hundreds of years old.

This sounds very practical. Where do I sign up?

How about a few billion year simulation? It could account for life being seeded by some primordial species in the galaxy (or universe) instead of arising here on its own. Which would in turn account for all the aliens on Star Trek looking more or less like humans.

Samsung has filed a countersuit, so we don't have to whip out the checkbooks just yet. This should be tied up in the courts for at least a couple years.
 
all this is good and all but how resistant to virus is this dna disk and ionizing radiation?
 
Pretty good it seems, they ran simulation for typical DNA degradation over a cycle of 100 000 years.Quite a bit better than any known storage medium known atm.
 
Curious how they simulate that much time, with out considering outside environmental effects during that time we may not know about or any type of evolution to our DNA.. ?

Not really. Living DNA has no error checking (or there is but the information does corrupt with time on everything living), that's why we have a funky thing called evolution going on.

None of this is true. DNA does have exonucleases that repair. A mutation is not evolution.
 
Dammit, and to think how much DNA I waste on a regular basis. Going to have to start bottling the stuff, might be worth something in Sweden soon.

That was shown to be the case in the Start Trek universe
 
So then could you use your own DNA as an Encryption key? Or would that be too volatile?

I think you mean mutation, not evolution
 
Course now they have to invent something that reads the information without destroying it. They article states this is Write Once, Read Once. Very Impractical.
