Hi guys, I'm in a dilemma regarding the subject in thread title. I can swap my sapphire 6950 2gb (non-unlockable) for a sapphire 7870 dual x (the one with short pcb)?
Total cost for me would be around 10$, but I'm still unsure whether I should do it or not, the 6950 has more shader units, but benchmarks are on the 7870's side (7870 has almost 2 yrs warranty unlike 6950)?

Thanks

Assuming nothing's wrong with it, I'd go with the 7870 for warranty's sake. That aside, it's a sidegrade, though the 7870 should be much quieter and able to OC better due to improved cooling over previous gen.

Make sure you do your research on the warranty terms though, and if it's non-transferrable (which pretty much all of them are not transferrable anymore) make sure you trust the trader enough to help you out if you need to RMA it later.

hd 7xxx silicon also handles tessellation more efficiently that the hd 6xxx so in games where that feature is prominent, the new card will run faster.

Gotta remember, a 7870 resale value if you change your mind is roughly 70$ more than a 6950 too.

take the 7870

If you can't unlock that 6950, take the 7870: it's a faster card overall.

I'm at that same crossroads so to speak, but i have a ref HD6950 that is flashed to the HD6970, I have a x58 evga board so i can crossfire but these cards still pull in $200 + on ebay so what would be an upgrade without having to pay over $300.. i'm open to AMD or Nvida.

Well, i just answered my own question as Newegg has the Sapphire HD 7950 with boost on sale for $289 with a mail in rebate for another $20 to bring it down to $269 and you get two free games.. time to sell the HD 6950

(If you can't unlock that 6950, take the 7870: it's a faster card overall. )

Your never going to make up the extar 1Gb of ram the HD7950 offers on a 384 bit bus and with the price is so close to each other it's a no brainer (7870>7950) as some of the better 7870's run @ $230
