Supermicro X10SL7-F SAS2 (SATA connectors) to SAS Expander possible?

Does anyone have experience or know if the LSI 2308 controller on the Supermicro X10SL7-F is compatible with a SAS expander such as this:

Via a reverse breakout cable such as this:

Seems like it would be an awful waste of a LSI 2308 (1000 device capability) and such bandwidth (8x PCIe 3.0) if you cannot expand it because they chose to put SATA style ports on the board rather than 2 mini-SAS ports.

I should have included mroe infor about my ports yeah.

They are called this:
8x SAS2 (6Gbps) via LSI 2308

But they look like this (the bank of 8 blue ones obviously):

Seems to me like the motherboard essentially has a built in "forward breakout cable" and that connecting that to a "reverse breakout cable" would undo it back to a regular mini-sas interface.

But yeah, sounds like it should work. I was assuming it would. Feel free anyone else to chime in with any experience on the subject.

Do you actually have the mobo yet? If so, buy a reverse breakout cable and check. If it doesn't work, return the cable :) Not sure you're going to be able to answer this definitively without actually trying...
 
I have the motherboard yes, but I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy a SAS expander.

If I just bought a reverse breakout cable I would have nothing to connect the other end to.

Yeah this works. I have the X10SL7-F, the reverse break out cable, and an [old] Chenbro expander. I hooked it all up and then plugged a single SSD into the expander to verify it all works, and it does. SSD showed up and was able to copy some data to it without it blowing up. =D
